Bothering Bald faced hornets with an Action Drone AD-1
Hornet Hacking with a Quadcopter HD
Our kids noticed this big hornets nest while riding their four wheelers. Having four hives of honeybees very near, I decided to do some filming. Using my Action Drone AD-1 equipped with the Naza M V2 and GoPro3 Black, we set out to just fly up to and video the reaction, thinking they would swarm the multirotor. I was flying Line of site from a relatively safe distance, which, along with losing GPS signal in close to the building, resulted in impacting the nest. Even then, the hornets did not swarm the drone. The nest was completely repaired less than 24 hours later, my next attack wave is in the planning stages, no stings yet and going to try and keep it that way!
Action Drone AD-1 is controlled with a Taranis X9D+ and X8R rx. Filmed with four cameras--Nikon D800/28-300---Sony A5100/16mm pancake---GoPro3 Black---Mobius. Stills edited in Lightroom 6, video compiled and edited in Final Cut Pro X.

I love how the hornets decided to attack the cameras and not the giant freaking drone who almost cut their nest in half
True
I would think the spinning propellers would keep the hornets from attacking the drone.
I know that's right for sure. Hahaha
Plus it looks most like a human
Gonna go out on a limb here and guess it might've had something to do with smell. They're not intelligent and they probably don't have much visual recognition going on in their brain. The guy probably had his scent all over that camera and stand from how much skin contact he made while the drone, which just needed to be placed down, had minimal. So if that's the case then when on attack mode they don't perceive the drone as existing and instead focus on attacking what they believe to be a living creature. Kinda like a weird version of T rex vision. That's all speculation though and I honestly have no clue how their brains work.
Hornet: Guys! A giant flying thing with blades just took out our nest! Everybody attack that random camera over there!
yeah, yeah. you attack the drone. I'll attack the camera ;)
newdefsys ....hornet 1 to hornet 2 : "This isn't the drone we're looking for."
Lmao
Hornets: the camera is the mothership!!!!
I think this might be a clue about how hornets perceive their surroundings. Presumably the camera is emitting some type of electromagnetic field that the drone is not, to make them think its a threatening animal. Apparently they dont rely on sight or sound very much, if it were the case they wouldn't have even noticed the cameras for the loud, erratically moving drone that just cut a hole in their hive.
That was an entertaining 12 minutes. I bought my first drone, I'm in my first week of flying trying to get the hang of it, which brought me here. I see this guy was a firefighter and died in a car wreck after he finished his shift, leaving a wife and children behind. So sad, my heart goes out to his family and friends.
Crazy to think after all of that his videos are still able to help them as they have ads. They will always have a little something from what he did

Aw man, I'm so sorry to hear that. I really liked how he put this video together. Nice long sequences where we can really see what's going on. No annoying music that tries to make the video overly epic or rock-n-roll; the vid is allowed to speak for itself. And he didn't try to be overly funny or super-cool or badass. Ian Lehman they saw it as one of their own
They probably were avoiding the giant spinning blades of death
Ian Lehman well if the hornets tried to attack the drone they would have been chopped in half by the rotating blades

Ian Lehman I think they were scared by the drone or something
I wasn't expecting it to stay airborne when you cut into it with the blades.
I think the late creator of this video had great raw talent for movie making. He knows what the curious want to see and learn about. He knows his equipment, the staging of shots, scripting, editing and post production as evident in his work, living on in the either...
Bald faced hornets are a thing of nightmares. Just hearing how they attack the cameras is terrifying.
where i was raised the things we called hornets were about 4 inches long. My older brother hit one with a kitchen broom and it sounded like he hit a rock. You could feel its wings beating the air when it dive bombed us and they are very territorial.
No, south texas. Before I was born one flew into the sleave of my dads sister when she was driving with her arm hanging out the window. Stung her like 10 times down her arm and back. Almost killed her.

Hornet stings are insane. I remember getting stung outside my parents house when I was a kid and my step dad calling me a wuss about it. Then a few days later he was trimming the hedges, the hornets nest ended up being in there, and they stung him like five times. He went running and diving into my little brother/sister's baby pool at 6'3 and 280lb and I laughed my ass off looking out the screen door. His turn to be the wuss.

@Mobile NPC yea, they are assholes. And a lot of people have bad allergies to them. When I see a hornet, or a wasp i never initiate the fight i just say shit about them, personal verbal attacks. That’s interesting that they didn’t attack the thing that damaged there nest. But they turned their anger towards the stationary camera’s.My guess is that the drone was putting out loud sound waves and it kept them away.
