Nikon does not need to release a new version of the Z9. They can release a firmware update that allows for higher than 20fps RAW capture and a lower MP mode with even higher fps RAW capture that would probably still beat the A9III in IQ/DR. Nikon does not need to "follow Sony's lead," because Sony is not in the lead. Nikon has had pre-capture on the Z9 for two years now. Congrats to Sony finally catching up on that (next year when the A9III eventually is released). And then there is the discussion on lenses. Sony is decades behind in lenses. BTW, Sony has not fired any shot with the A9III. Jury is still out on the IQ/DR penalty, and there a lot of other unanswered questions such as buffer performance and other specifics. Very premature to say the A9III is actually a great camera. We'll see.
Nikon z9 and z8 have sensors from Sony Semiconductor. They are both very good cameras and very competitive with Sony a1, especially considering the price and more versatile lens selection for wildlife. With that, it’s strange to talk about Nikon answer to Sony a9iii - Nikon will only have that answer that the Sony would let it to 😂
You seem to insinuate that sony stores camera sensors on the shelf and just wait for customers to buy just like a donut on the shelf in a donut store. It does not work that way. What happens is that customers like Nikon design their own sensors based on their specifications and have it manufactured on sony's facilities.

Sony has many different groups. Their image sensor group is different from their camera group. Like everyone else, their camera group has to order from the image sensor group just like everyone else. Almost an entire different entities. So no, Nikon can get their sensors manufactured independent of their camera group.
You have a wrong impression how this works. Sony sensor manufacturing division is previously held by toshiba before it was sold. It mainly caters to fabrication of sensors which is given by "customers" according to design specifications "which come from the engineering department" of their customers. They will maintain IP rights to the design. This is not just "so let us buy your sensors". No, that is now how it works. I've worked in a semicon industry so i know.
