Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Adam Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late. Directed by Johan Renck and based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia, the film also stars Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini.
Spaceman is coming to Netflix on March 1.

  • Anyone curious about this movie before watching should know this is a movie for those on a spiritual path. Don’t go by the commercial ratings of this movie. The movie is very slow paced with exploring the themes of spirituality, sacrifice, love, loss, fear and acceptance. While all the earth moments and interactions are predictable it’s the space conversations that will keep you drawn and connecting the dots of your life and humanity. Again, you’ll get this movie if you’re on a spiritual path and not watching the movie for entertainment value. Bless you 🙏

  • Movie might not be for everyone but Adam Sandler did great. Has a lot of metaphor such as is it really a spider or divine intervention guiding Adam towards self-realization of his thoughts, ego, emotions, past deeds, and how they impacted others and himself including his childhood. Coming to terms in isolation, loneliness, fear, regret towards gratitude & growth. Even the cosmos symbolic of the character’s evolution & expansion. Spider was weird but get it. Facing yourself is scary and even ugly at times just like the spider making Adam & audience uncomfortable. So many go through this just not on a spaceship.

  • Paul Dano as the spider is such an interesting and exciting choice! He's great in every role, and I think his soothing voice will put a lot of audiences at rest despite the huge spider on screen. Also, really happy to see Sandler doing another serious role - he's great at wounded, vulnerable characters.

  • Overall I liked the movie but it's not a great movie. The whole "God's Loneliest Astronaut" has been done before, better, in other films but the dialog between Adam Sandler and Paul Dano (who plays the space spider) are very compelling to watch. The movie is centered around Sandler's relationship with his wife played by Carey Mulligan (who is unfortunately wasted here, she doesn't get much to do) and yet the real narrative thrust is between Sandler and Dano. I just wish the ending had a stronger emotional landing than it did, it sort of drowns in its own philosophical word soup and doesn't come to any true catharsis or emotional upswell, it just sort of keeps the same tepid moodyness the rest of the film set. I still think it's worth a watch.

  • This looks absolutely incredible! Netflix, PLEASE release this one in theaters like you’ve done with a select few movies in the past (like “All Quiet on the Western Front”, “Marriage Story”, “The Irishman”, “Glass Onion”, “Pinocchio”, “The Midnight Sky”, “Mank”, etc). I would gladly go see this, probably multiple times, if it was playing in a commercial movie theater near me.

  • Reminds me of Ad Astra. In both movies the characters suffer from self-inflicted loneliness, they choose that because it is safer there (emotionally speaking) but they also suffer. They don't really want to be alone. Both characters evolve in their stories. They decide to open up to emotions. They connect to their partners and they give up on fear. Fear of being hurt emotionally. They are lucky to get another chance. I actually feel very identified with them, I know I need to connect to my partner and open up, but the fear is intense.
