  • It’s insane how much information you can communicate in 0-D using color, brightness, and flickering. It might also be possible to “tint” colors in order to communicate stuff like status effects (for example: a health system where you can take multiple hits from the bear, but every time you get hit your screen becomes progressively more red, thus making the actual colors harder to discern), as long as the game objects have well defined colors on their own, which your game does.

    @audenjb@audenjb Жыл бұрын
    • love that idea of making the screen more red over time to make it harder

    • i think it would be 1d instead 0d which is nothing because we are 3d yet we see 2d and 2d see 1d just a line with differenent colors like this but more so 1d would see just a dot that changes

      @Sleepyperso@Sleepyperso Жыл бұрын
    • There’s a can-do/should-do line somewhere… How will a colorblind individual manage this game? Or one enhanced with tints? Yes, in a standup full blown game use colors and tints to help convey what’s happening, when and as appropriate… but making it the ONLY clue about what will help or roadblock you? NO.

      @Relkond@Relkond Жыл бұрын
    • @@Sleepyperso 2D images are called 2D because of their width and height (dimensions). A line has only a width so it’s got 1D. A point has nothing so it’s 0D. This game is a 2D game (the map clearly has a width and a height), but is presented to us as a point. How something is represented has no bearing on it’s internal dimensionality. 2D and 3D (and even 4D and beyond) objects are all commonly displayed to us in 2D. Just because what we’re observing is 0D does not mean the structure behind it is 1D.

    • It's not really 1D. First of all, it has a 2D map; it just displays it as one pixel. You might call it 0D for being displayed as a pixel, you might call it 2D because of the map, or you might call it 2D since ultimately it's being displayed on a 2D screen. But you wouldn't call it 1D since that would be a line of which this game has none. Unless you're saying it's 1D since time is a dimension. But even then, people don't usually count time as a dimension since it's not spatial. No. I'm not fun at parties. Have a nice day.

  • Well, you could convey way more information with using RGB color space as a multidimensional space, rather than a binary, which would make larger maps more playable. For example, presence of water wouldn't be communicated in a "water, not water" fashion, but if you got close to water, the pixel would shift hue in B axis. G and B communicate the landscape, and R is the bear maybe?

    @gkk116@gkk116 Жыл бұрын
    • It was harder to distinguish color change than I thought, which is why I ended up reworking and saturating the colors. For ease of play less colors is probably better, but there's definitely more that's possible, it might just be difficult to distinguish. In the end, my game ended up being more about memorization and recollection of your steps.

      @VerilyFine@VerilyFine Жыл бұрын
    • @@VerilyFine Yeah it is pretty true... jpg's compression algorithm is based on our weaker perception of color frequency (the change of color, from one pixel to the next). The chromatic channel receives more compression than luminesce.

  • I think you could have made a pretty cool game with sound and one pixel and if it was large enough on the screen some medically blind people could actually see the shades, I know this because quite a few blind people can see shades of colors but it’s basically a blob of in deciferable nonsense where the colors blend till you can’t see 😅 I think a bright screen with just a color would make the blending take less effect and make their vision a consistent color and you can add dynamic sound and give that group of people who are blind but can “see” color an experience they could never have before, and it could be a actually fun game to play 😅 and give if some white blurry shading but not much to make it feel like the character you play is blind for those who are not blind to understand it better, I hope you see this and give it a try 😅

  • Way cool! Having tried it on itch, I think I would have liked it better if it worked the turn-based way, or at least if the bear moved less frequently. To avoid the softlock, maybe just make the bear move every n player moves instead of on resource collection. I do think this would be downright fun if it allowed you to pause and ponder and move when ready. As it is, not moving results in death in 6 seconds or less most of the time. Even if you lead the bear all the way to one square from a corner and sprint to the opposite corner, you would only get to stop running for 16 seconds. Still fun to try, but only for a minute or two. If the game didn't move so fast though, man, I think you could do a lot, maybe even make a reduced form of 'Adventure'.

  • I wonder if you could use different views to see different statuses/information. For instance, you have a whole row of keys for views, sort of like map modes in grand strategy games. One displays the location, another has height, hunger, thirst. You could even add things like danger (distance to nearest bear), distance to food, distance to water. That might allow random generation to be viable because now you have a way of gathering information.
