Decades ago I was a trained bricklayer in the US, but found an easier way to make money by selling products. The way I was trained, is the way they do it in the UK, where you have a big trowel and spread the mud in long swaths. I was taught to spread the mud the perfect height so that there was no tapping, only pressing slightly, then the excess that was squeezed out was used to butter the head joint on the brick you just laid. I could see where the German method would be better, because with the small trowel you are not lifting as much weight and getting your arm worn out. Putting the mud in the bucket to keep it from drying out is another good idea. It also saves time of having to put water on the mud board and constantly re hydrating the dried out mortar.

One Saturday 3 Dutch guys turned up they took the outside wall of one elevation whilst we were on the adjacent elevation. They used this method and they creamed us. Ben Croft kzhead.info/sun/os6xepx5j4huias/bejne.html when your doing your next private job try using the tubs and a smaller trowel you’ll go even faster . Very relaxed way of bricklaying . Note the Dutch guy nearest you in the video how relaxed he is . He’s holding the trowel in a very relaxed manner not choking it. The brick they are laying are 50 mm high that’s why they can use the push joint . The trowel he is using is an Arnhem trowel .

The having materials all up higher part has really opened my eyes! Although I will say you really *shouldn't* be tapping the bricks down anyway until you start getting around about chest height. The bed should be laid so that you can gently push the brick home with your finger tips, as you're doing here. If you're doing a load of taps on every brick at every height you are kinda doing it wrong.

Love your work, thanks for the advice, I will take it on board. In our country down under on sites they do not drink alcohol while working. It's against the law, customers have noticed a few crooked walls. It would not be a good time to get tipsy. What if brick layers are on high rise buildings? Could this be a risk? I don't drink- I dare say that's a good thing. Therefore I rest my case.

The reason he doesn't need to tap the bricks is because he's laying them frog down, this actually is not good practice because you can't ensure the frog is full of pug. However, I am not going to argue with a great character like that, each to his own and he's obviously a great bricklayer.

I was a top level bricklayer qualified in 1976 after an almost 4 year apprenticeship and could lay an average of 650 bricks a day laying bricks the conventional way. building a standard building with no internal corners. doing my own very neat pointing {much neater than you see here.} that's 93 bricks an hour over 7 hours of work. 23 bricks in 15 mins including building corners. Glen has some good points in what he says, but having bricks up that high and working out of a bucket has some advantages and some disadvantages. at the end of the day I think I would of laid as many if not more bricks than Glen did. I did have my spots on two concrete blocks to save on the bending down, but sorry no way is laying mortar for one brick quicker than laying for a few at a time.

@@brickbybric im laying shallow frog bricks atm(75mm) but using the exact same method as him. Ive got a 11 inch london style as i still do long spreading for concrete blocks. I need to convert my workmates too so we can invest in some tubs and hop ups before i get the new trowel. Lol i been using 12 inch phillies until now. So it will be 1 extreme to another
I've seen 1 other Mason do it like this it's called pic n dip and yea he was fast and clean
Legend
Well done sir! And not a drop of muck on his suit. Love it!
Keith Richards in a suit laying bricks ROFL! Nice work good to see your still on the trowel :)
Cheers mate
Hi Glen. I'm a Irish bricklayer built plenty of railway bridges for British rail. Great demonstration

Fantastic video ,iv always maintained a little bit of cop on and a eagerness to learn ,and you can do anything, the saying your always learning ,how very true ,great video ,great to be able to pass on knowledge like that .
Above all good quality brickwork is most important I've been laying for over 30 years so maybe I'm out of place commenting, I'm sure this post is very helpful for the people who want to learn. Thank you & show more it's done different over here & it is very interesting .
I agree Terry, it's very beneficial for people who do DIY or are just learning. Thanks so much for the comment
M8 that’s a great mop of hair - seriously I watched & helped my dad lay bricks on 9in work he use to do it this way 40 years ago I did not know different then but when you work on your own a lot this works - great vid.
Thanks Ben
Really a contrasting job. The best I saw .
Nice work. Never seen this style before. Thanks.
Well done.plenty of great tips. Funny banter aswell
Thanks very much John
Suprisingly epic video with amazing info. The people picking on the fact he’s laying them upside down completely miss the genius of the laying technique, hop ups and buckets. Thanks boys funny and informative great video
Thanks Elliott. I appreciate positive feedback mate, glenn
Glen fancy a couple of weeks in Northern Ireland that was the best thing l have seen for a good while I,m 64 and buddy you give us all hope. Keep taking the bottled beer you know it makes sense all the best

to be fair this technique looks so much easier on running in im going to have to give it a try , i was wandering though how you use this style wen working low? say the first 3 to 4 courses , would it be the same, just buckets and bricks on the floor?
Now that's clean work
Happy Retirement! Thank you for the video. Judging by the comments from experienced bricklayers, this is the video to learn from! ;) KUDOS
Thanks Vicki. I think Bricklaying made easy 3 you'll have a laugh
I thought it was Brian budonde from phone jacker
Love that!
Boooooooo bidilibong
Exactly
🤣 buuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh
😂😂
Imagine how much faster it would be if you eliminated a lot of those steps you are making by having more planks to put your bricks on. Great work and a much better way to lay bricks, thankyou.
Awesome. Video. Thanks. What size trowel and make is it you use you and your mate? Thanks
A couple of good tips there Glen about a tub to keep the gobbo in, and only putting enough on the wall for one brick each time. Good stuff.
Thanks Marttin
The Tommy Cooper of Bricklaying , joking aside brilliant Video and an honest guy , not like the knobs who brag about laying a thousand a day
Well done Glenn good video.!!
It’s the Keith floyd of bricklaying , you only need a big glass of red and your there 😉
😂😂
The having materials all up higher part has really opened my eyes! Although I will say you really *shouldn't* be tapping the bricks down anyway until you start getting around about chest height. The bed should be laid so that you can gently push the brick home with your finger tips, as you're doing here. If you're doing a load of taps on every brick at every height you are kinda doing it wrong.
great work, made to look so simple! fair play mate
This guy is class 🤟🏻
Pros always make it look easier than it is…but thx for this video! Question…. What is best practice for brick against wall? Just bought a house and my brick steps and patio are pulled away from wall of house. Should fasteners have been used or some type of adhesive or both? Be well!
What size is that trowel you use. What size would you say is best?
Legend thanks pal
My favorite bricklayer on KZhead!
Thanks Mark. Will be posting a new one very shortly. I think you'll like it
This is how we do it in Finland. I was always curious about those mortar boards Anglo-Brickies love to use. What pros are there for using those as opposed to using big ol' bins?
None! Thanks for comment buddy
Glenn Brilliant..KZhead has come to us all standard brickie that has earnt his monie. Time and advance is standard ..shame to some comments these are the guys that are chasing the £ If They had brains its not a race yet are making there life harder by being competitive? Race Shows your young keen no hrs served. Hit it up in 30yrs. See where you are backache had enough. Its not a sprint but doing yourselves injustice. Put your kid on the line no monie because you all want to look what the next is doing. The games gone if you want to compete. Grow up do your hrs. 😊

I once new a bricklayer bold jimmy to his mates. They say he was a matelow trowl and allways worked for high stakes. He bent his back while laying some say while praying to the Goddess of the trowl sweeet lilly lake. No finner tradie held the trowl and his heart knew no persuasion. And He put them down with out a frown did bold Jimmy to his mates
good effort sir from a fellow bricklayer. I might well give that a whirl next week. liked and subscribed

Catch you soon Paul
Well very good !!!
Thank you
Good stuff.
Not the way I do it but it works for him. Fair play geeza.
OK!!!!!!!!!Beatiful work!!!
Thanks Carlos
Old timer thanks for the knowledge I agree with the keeping your mud in a bucket but stop walking so far away from mud keep it near you lol thanks for your years of brick work
That old timer will burn you down the wall. Lol
Wet the boards up good and don’t put loads of mortar on them and they do good. The problem comes when you don’t use the mortar fast enough and the new mortar gets put on top of the old.Did you go to work in that suit?
The only person who puts the frog down the proper direction
Hastings finest laying them in style...
Nice one Glenn. The economy of effort is so obvious in this method (as you saw in Germany).1/2 the number of trips to the wall, mortar can squeeze out on 3 sides of the bed etc. so no tapping required. If the long bed merchants want their bodies f#@k3d up in no time due to excessive motion it's their call, Muppets😩 You Sir, just won KZhead bricklaying, end of.👍
Thanks so much
ihad some clothes like that when i went on a cruise lol but i can tell your acompetent tradesman
Thank you David
you look an happy go lucky guy!
Every brick upside down 😂😂
That was highly entertaining bricklayer myself 👍
Thanks Mervyn
Class enit lol.
Makes me want to watch Back to the future
this guy would make a good teacher .. and pass his skill set on
Thank you Sam
Retired bar the odd casher here and there 😉
And this is better than Top Gear!
And a lot cheaper!
Glenn great video mate, do you work out of the bins when laying blocks mate?👍
Sure do. Just find it so much easier mate. I'm lucky cos I can work with a small trowel. In Germany they have trowels especially designed to work out of bins. Stay safe buddy, glenn
Love the frog down method
Proven to be by far the best method. Stronger apparently
Nice suit.
Excellent tutorial.
Thanks buddy
Glenn where R you these days, hope your well Malcs formally of Brighton Sussex now in Perth WA since 2001
Made it look easy with minimal effort, happy retirement mate 👍
Thank you
Love your work, thanks for the advice, I will take it on board.
Nice comment, Aussies are BADASS and tamed the terrifying land on their own. They can drink what they want and the customers can deal with it. I'm sure if he fell he would be fine.
Отлично, мужик!
It's a beautiful suit~~
How doe's it work if you lay them the right way up?
This Guy is brilliant proper old skool would love to have been on the trowel with him in the day
Thanks Dan
Just saying you want those big green plastic spot boards, the pug doesn’t go dry and stays moist whilst water doesn’t drip off the sides. Top video mate
Thanks Tom
If you can't find an Ark to raid, get Harrison Ford to come along and build you one, he'll even build it upside down, if you ask him nicely. Big hand for the cameraman.
How do you get full muck joints please
50 years practicing to get one take. Bless
two thumbs down!!! prob chris Longhurst and stu Crompton ;)
lol
Thank you
.. and Rob Songer
Stu Crompton is a bog standard trowel two bob as we say down south this old fella knows his stuff
@@KevinColt Rob Songer knows his stuff ,he does not rush because he does not have too
To all those that don't know laying frog down is a acceptable way to lay a brick on non load bearing walls and in fact increases the u value on house walls because it traps air and when i did my time it was aways called pug
Thanks so much John
Thanks John
What an absolute fucking legend
Geezer looks like he’s had a night on the tiles
You'd have a problem working with a left handed bricky as we tend to work forwards - no bum fights in the middle. And those bricks are designed to be laid frog up. But I'm with you on the Dutch method. Best used with a rounded Dutch trowel.
Agree entirely John
Loved watching an old master. Just one question, weren't the bricks upside down?
Laying bricks frog down, big no no
Reminds me of my old man. He hated the work, hard starve trowels and said there was woodpeckers on the job if he heard continual tapping.😅😅
