In the corner of a busy office at the NHK Broadcasting Center in Shibuya, Tokyo, a staffer rearranged books, vinyl records and tchotchkes on a bright red shelving unit. The production crew double-checked equipment settings and made small adjustments to the lighting. Another worker added a few more posters to the tall white file cabinets. Cameras were set and microphones were ready because Fujii Kaze and his band had just rehearsed the night before. Everyone in the room - including a few of us from NPR that were there to help - was eager and excited because the very first performance for Tiny Desk Concerts JAPAN was about to start.
Popular around the world, the talented Fujii Kaze is a Japanese singer and pianist known for his sultry R&B grooves and catchy songwriting. His adventurous spirit was strong as he settled into the Tiny Desk way - a concert that's intimate, mostly acoustic and recorded without reverb, effects, in-ear monitors or wedges. During the rehearsal, the band quickly acclimated to the environment and adjusted instrument volumes to hear each other better. The end result was a beautiful 30 minute set, captured without pause and with no stops, restarts or retakes.
This video is part of the second international version of Tiny Desk, a joint venture between NPR and The Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) - the sole public media organization in Japan that is operated with the purpose of providing the latest news, education and culture both domestically and internationally. This new series will spotlight emerging and established Japanese artists with the same engaged performances, look and feel of the original Tiny Desk Concerts series.

    • @@HATHANHsummerrainmoonlight There are many great songs in Japan that Vietnamese people don't know about. You may not realize it, but there are many copies of Japanese songs in Vietnam pop. There are countless covers of Japanese songs, especially old Vietnamese songs. Just singing in Vietnamese language.

      @novrinkov0053@novrinkov0053Күн бұрын
    • @@HATHANHsummerrainmoonlight Japanese songs are outstanding in Asia, and other Asian countries can't compete with them. People who understand music will notice the difference in the level of composition and lyrics compared to others. Their music market size, variety of genre, and music history are unparalleled in other Asian countries. The rest of Asia only has kpop idol and boring pop music. Unlike Japan, there are no deep genres from metal to jazz. There are 30 times more genres and quality than Vietnamese music scene. Japan is the only country in Asia that stands out in terms of musical instrument skill too. Anyone who knows music can understand this.

  • I've had this video on repeat for this whole week. Kaze's artistry is very apparent in his music videos, but there is a tonal texture and groove that is inherent to his live performances that makes his live renditions exceed the studio versions (no shade to Kaze and Yaffle's work on the studio productions at all though, they are all brilliant!). If Kaze were ever interested in recording and releasing these arrangements in another EP/mini album, I'm sure there would be plenty of admirers. Thank you, NPR Music, for constantly spotlighting artists!

  • Fujii Kaze reminds us of the inherent freedom, beauty and artistry of music. I imagine that if Mozart were reborn in modern times, he would be like this person. Nowadays, even top artists often mechanically process their voices and adjust their pitch. The environment surrounding young artists is even worse, and in the worst cases, they are asked to undergo plastic surgery on their faces and dance like robots. The music they produce feels like an industrial product born from marketing, and is far from the art that overflows from within the human being.

  • 8:57 Seriously, this arrangement is probably one of the most beautiful things i've ever heard in my life. The fact that the song is barely recognizable, it changes the whole mood, droping the kinda funky style (from the original song) and going with this lovely bossa nova influence. I absolutely need this on Spotify.

    • @@myrose0123 ok my time to shine, firstly let’s talk about wavelengths. Sound, including Fujii Kaze’s marvellous voice travels in the form of waves through the air, these waves have different lengths corespondent to different pitches, when Fujii Kaze sings, his voice generates a medley of waves with varying lengths, producing a rich spectrum of tones that resonate both with our ears and souls. For example, in Matsuri, the chorus goes from a high pitch with a bright and energetic tone that perfectly reflects the celebratory theme of the song while also delving into the relaxed and conversational tone during the verses, adding a warm, gentle and intimate timbre. When the electric guitar part comes, his vocals become climactic and again change the tone. Humans making sound itself is complex interplay of airflow, vocal cord vibrations, and resonance within the vocal tract. Fujii Kaze's ability to control these factors with precision allows him to effortlessly transition between high and low pitches, creating the masterpiece we just watched. Fujii Kaze's voice exhibits a distinctive timbre, or tone quality, that is warm and resonant . Timbre is influenced by the shape of the vocal tract and the unique characteristics of the vocal cords, and Fujii Kaze's timbre evokes a sense of intimacy and emotional depth in his music. Specially seen in “Garden” according to me, the lyrics blended with the tone of his voice almost too perfectly. Anyway he’s a gem, love him. (I have a literature paper tomorrow, I will bid you guys adieu now, thank you)

Anyway, thank you for your time and comment. It was fun. I love science and liberal arts. I hope some scientists will study/research about Kaze’s music based on the physics, psychophysics, quantum physics, astronomy, mathematics, etc in the future. We all recognize Fujii Kaze is the talented amazing musician. love Kaze. 🫶

  • Fuji Kaze is such an amazing artist, not only is his song Shinunoga E-Wa good but he has so many other good songs from his other album like Love All Serve All and they have such a nice tone, message, and just sound great it's impossible to not love his music. I started really listening to his music in the beginning of April 2024 and I've fallen in love with everything he has to offer.
