How to Make a Short Medieval Hood!

2018 ж. 15 Там.

Today's hot new medieval trend: short hoods! Very sexy, very in style right now! Clearly the 1400's are coming back in fashion :D
This is a quick little hood that buttons up the front, and has extra length in the brim to create a decorative fold back with the contrasting lining.

  • I hope you guys loved my fun liripiped hood! A quick note: I didn't talk much about seam allowance in this video, I just vaguely said to measure loosely, so if you do end up trying to make your own hood, I suggest to add an inch to every measurement for seam allowance, and to always make a mockup!

    @MorganDonner@MorganDonner5 жыл бұрын
  • When measuring the circumference of your face, open your jaw wide. This way you'll be certain that your measurements allow for breathing, talking and yawning comfortably in your hood. I personally find it safer than eyeballing the addition of an inch or two. Similarly, I'd also suggest at least wearing a beanie when measuring the crown of your head, or your hair up if it's thick, or anything that you might be wearing under the hood that would add extra bulk to your head.

  • If you put a pin horizontally across the end of your button hole, when you use the seam ripper the pin will help stop you over shooting and making a too larger hole! Warning, Liripiped hoods not to be worn indoors if a cat is present.

    • My hair is down to my mid-calves. I trained my cats to not attack my braids or loose hair by sounding like I got hurt whenever a cat touched my hair roughly. They're 100% chill around my hair now, cats are playful, but not out to hurt us :P The same principle could apply with a liripipe. If it's attacked, act like that hurt. The cat will drop it. Praise praise praise praise. It won't take much time for them to learn. Both of my cats learned "biting this hurts her" within a week. These same cats go behind my blinds whether I want them to or not, it's not like they're just magically obedient cats. Cats just don't play to hurt humans :)

  • I love your channel and can't understand why you don't have more subscribers. I am quite experienced in historical sewing (especially late 14th century) and still enjoy your videos (even though I don't "need" tutorials). They are perfect as sewing company, and it would be great if you could do some kind of more "Vlog-sewing video" a bit longer than these shorter tutorials. Keep up your great work. Nice to see a medieval sewing channel (I have mostly found channels focusing on 18th century and onwards).

  • Thank you Morgan! I just spent a weekend sewing by hand my own hood and I loved it. I never liked sewing by machine and I thought that hand sewing won't be my thing. Turns out I am wrong. I love my hood, it still needs buttons, but it's so great and warm that I'm contemplating wearing it in the cold wintery days here in UK :D.

  • Weren't long liripipes essentially a form of conspicuous consumption? Especially if the hood was made of a fine fabric and/or dyed in a rich colour.

  • You inspired me to try making this (and a kirtle)!!!!! It has turned out lovely so far but I think I may have made a tactical error when drafting and I can't get the bottom to look even sort of round (or oblong). Do you have any tips on how to fix this (I tried just winging it with the scissors on my mockup and I have regrets though that might be the way to go)?

    • I know it might not be very helpful for you, but I get most of my wool at thrift stores, or in person at medieval faires. If I am feeling lucky, sometimes I'll haunt ebay for a few weeks, especially if I am trying to find some wool in a particular color. If I am buying linen, I pretty much exclusively get it from fabrics-store.com Good luck! Link me @morgandonner on Instagram once you've started sewing, I'd love to see pictures!

    • I used a bit of wool and linen I had on hand, but I would suggest practicing at first with whatever fabric you can get! If you have any old bed-linens you don't want, the fabric from those can be a great way to get mockup, and testing the construction method.

  • Hi Morgan, sorry to respond to a 2 year old video. But I was wondering, if you ever make a similar hood again(or if they exist, an even more basic feminine one?), could you please to a step by step video? I'm completely in love with this design, but as I'm new to sewing I really need to see step by step what you did(like you did with the men's hood). Would really appreciate it. And wouldn't it fit in your #mybasicheart style series? :)

  • Would a similar design be used to make a fitted wimple out of linen? I confess to cheating and using a cotton Jersey because of the stretch but would really like to make a more authentic design to wear under the veil. Needs to be fitted and in one piece and not the head band/straight linen piece combination that is often shown.

    @ABC1701A@ABC1701A5 жыл бұрын
    • Ooo, that sounds tricky! I have only worn wimples a few times, but when I did, I had fairly good success with a circular veil, folded in half across the bias (so it stretched around my face/neck). But that is not really much different than the "headband/straight linen piece combination", so it's probably not what you are looking for. You could use a similar design as the hood for a wimple, but I don't think that you would be able to avoid the seam down the center front of the neck. If you don't mind the visible seam, then yes, give it a try!
