00:00 Introduction
00:18 History
In the 19th century, Beau Brummel set the tone for men's fashion. He was a big proponent of black eveningwear and so people also wore black shoes. At that time, rules like "No brown in town" or "No brown after six" just ensured that people dressed in a socially acceptable way.
Today, dress codes are much more relaxed than they were fifteen or sixteen years ago. If you wear a well-fitting suit today or a combination, you are much better dressed than the average
person.
So "No brown in town" or "No brown after six" are simply not valid anymore. What matters is that you look good. It's much better to wear a well-fitting suit in Brown shoes than to wear an ill-fitting suit with black shoes in town after 6 pm. Most debonair Italians I know only wear black shoes for funerals, for weddings and for black tie, white tie events.
One of the really nice things about brown leather is that it develops a patina, unlike black shoes. That means over time, you get this nice look of the leather and it's really pleasant and it's not something you can achieve with dark shoes.
Unlike black, brown comes in a variety of shades so you can really create a unique color palette in your shoe closet.
When to Wear Brown Shoes
03:18 Business Suits
Three-piece business suits, two-piece business suits, solid, small patterns, fine stripes, Glen plaids, this is what we're talking about here right now. If your suit is black, you should wear black shoes. When you should have a black suit to begin with, is another question but don't combine black suits with brown shoes.
→ Black: Simply put, don’t wear a black suit with brown shoes. Black shoes, in a conservative style, work best.
→ Charcoal Grey: We suggest black over any form of brown leather. Dark brown can work, but avoid tan shoes.
→ Mid Grey: Black works, of course, but dark brown or cherry are also suitable colors. Once again, avoid tan.
→ Dark Navy: Black works well with a navy suit, but cordovan, tan, and dark brown can also look magnificent and dashing. Of course, you will stand out visually with light tan shoes and a navy suit - something to bear in mind.
→ Lighter Navy: Black will often look better than brown, but it ultimately depends on the cloth. With pinstripes, we suggest wearing black shoes and never brown.
→ Dark Brown: Pair a dark brown suit with brown shoes, and skip black altogether.
05:58 Casual Suits
→ Green: Brown every time, for all shades. Avoid black.
→ Khaki: Dark browns work well. Avoid black.
→ Tan: Cordovan, cherry and medium brown are great. Avoid black.
→ White/Off White: Two-toned shoes, such as brown-and-white spectators, are a dapper choice, but dark brown, mid-brown or reddish-brown work as well.
→ Brown: As before, pair brown suits with brown shoes and skip black altogether.
08:05 Sport Coat / Odd Jacket - Trouser Combination
→ Black: With black corduroy, tan leather boots are a good choice. Black dress pants worn with a sport coat will look best with black shoes, though more casual shoes like black loafers could be a good compromise in terms of formality.
→ Charcoal Grey: We suggest black over any form of brown. Dark brown can work, but avoid tan.
→ Mid Grey: Black works, but dark brown and cherry are also good colors. Avoid tan shoes.
→ Blue: All kinds of brown men’s dress shoes can be worn with blue colors - cordovan, tan and dark brown can look especially smart. You will garner more attention with a light tan shoe.
→ Denim: All kinds of brown leather shoes work well, even with black jeans. Tan and cordovan oxblood will serve you well here. Leather boots are a natural pair for jeans, though anything with a higher ankle would naturally interfere with skinny jeans.
→ Red: All shades of brown work well, though reddish brown can look a bit too deliberate. Dark brown and tan are good choices
→ Green: Try wearing brown every time, for all shades. Avoid black.
→ Khaki: Dark browns work well. Avoid black.
→ Tan: Cordovan, cherry and mid-brown are great. Avoid black.
→ White / Off White: Go for two-toned footwear, dark brown, mid-brown, or reddish brown.
→ Brown: Brown only.
→ Dark Brown: In a more smart-casual outfit such as this, tan works well when paired with dark brown.
→ Miscellaneous: Brown is the best shoe and boot color for sport coats and contrasting trousers. Sometimes you may also see boots or shoes with fabric inserts, which can be quite stylish.

Great video and thank you for sharing. When I was in high school my uncle was a shoe maker and he made me a pair of brown shoes that I was very proud of. Sadly he passed away. It has since been 25 years. Today I have 41 pairs of shoes and have had many over the years (not bespoke) but still have not had a pair as comfortable...
as i have only one pair of shoes which are brown, this has left me feeling quite positive about my life
The breadth of knowledge that this man has about fashion is out of the world.
I’m glad I can find a channel that is very mature and with someone who knows what quality is. Thank you
Thank you so much for your so well informed & well intended presentations. I forwarded this link to every person, man & woman, willing to get educated. All your topics are Very well done & the way how you presented them is delightful. I will be back 😚🌼
I love your videos. Thank you for posting!
I love this channel. It basically gives all what I want to know and learn.
Extremely informative video. Definitely learned a lot. Looking for something casual that I can combine with a lot of outfits and I was leaning on a burgundy/brown boot but this video confirmed it for me. Much thanks.
+Fuck You You're welcome.
My brother only has one pair of black shoes and he rarely ever wears them. He's sworn by brown/cordovan shoes his whole life. I understand why now. Great video.
Your comment on the well dressed Italian was spot on...thank you!
Just bought a pair of dark brown wingtips to go with my navy suit. Since I tend to be one of the best dressed guys in the room(there are not a lot of guys where I live, who pay attention to details like tie bars, pocket squares or even fit or that matter) I don't mind the brogueing. In fact, I think it looks great with a suit, especially for a younger man. And you can always dress them down with a pair of chinos or jeans. Really solid video!
Do it bro ;)
when u dress nice and that other guy's wearing a hoody with black trainers. Forget it. Women love u.
PeterPwn! ~ Never wear brown shoes with a navy, black, grey, or blue suit --- or pants.
Love the dimples in your tie. Stylish!
this guy presenting is a true expert and professional. amazing outfit he wears. wow...
A hot mess!
To be fair, most of what he says is correct, but he dresses absolutely terribly; he has no sense of personal fashion whatsoever.
I love this man! Really informative and absolutely on point!
I wear a black Cerutti cloth suit that I designed with a ‘camel’ colour stitch on the button hole, mahogany buttons and a taupe lining with off white Columbia stitch; it works wonderfully with brown shoes and belt and allows me to add pinks and reds in the shirt and tie
I like your get-up today. My first good pair of dress shoes I bought black captoe Oxfords in London, on my way to Cambridge. They look good even with a Tuxedo get-up. I anticipated the advise of Gentlemen's Gazette! (Although I love to wear them with white socks, to show the world I'm not a snob.)
This is a great video! Makes me want to double or triple my brown shoe collection (I only have one pair at present).
+Christopher Maurer Thank you, I am sure you will have a few ideas now on what to add to your collection. Also make sure to watch this video: kzhead.info/sun/ZNuEXdumqGWnhI0/bejne.html
What a great vid, very informative.
Glad you think so!
OK- I like this bright outfit.
I really need a pair of oxblood shoes. Such a powerful color!
The dark burgundy/"cordovan" shade indeed is a wise choice when getting started.
Ive always been drawn to brown leather , but unsure how to get it to work . I was afraid of the many different shades and textures but now I feel more confident and may just have another shoes buying frenzy
I have just began a new career requiring a professional, business attire. Before I was given this opportunity, I worked in either jeans and work boots, or camouflage and combat boots for my entire life. Up until a couple of months ago, I had no idea of what size shirt or jacket that I wear, beyond the standard L/XL. I appreciate your insight and advice. I need all of the help that I can get.
Great video, only the valid points. Thanks! Subbed!
Thanks man, I'm buying my first suit today and this helped

Burgundy is such a beautiful color and just bought my first pair of dress shoes...ever...yeah, just got into it. My closet is basically Jean's and Chinos but bought Double Monk for them...now the dress game will increase ten folds.
Thank you for sharing!
Love the video Sven! do you have any suggestions on where to buy reasonably priced high quality trousers? More so on the casual end of things. If I want to pull off brown shoes I'd like well made trousers to compliment them.
Thank you for producing this informative video. Great job.
It is our pleasure. Thank you!
This is a great video. Thanks for the detailed information.
+Syed Ameed You're welcome.
Highly enlightening video. Thank you 🙏

Great tips! Seems brown is the way to go.
Thanks Raphael another must watch vid 🤟🏼🕶
Very Interesting. I only have 1 black shoe which is a black cap toed Oxford for my evening and formal wear. The rest of my shoes are brown cap toes, loafers, Oxfords 👞, and wing tips in different shades of brown.
This is the channel I've been looking for...THANK YOU! Subscribed!

Not yet, but I will now. :) Your brown shoes video is perfect for the fall attire and for casual Christmas parties. I am trying to start a "Dapper Day" or "Fancy Friday" at my workplace. Thanks again!
Excellent. Just go to www.Gentlemansgazette.com/
Just bought my first real dress shoes today and after watching this I'm glad I bought a pair of black oxfords.

+james smith Thanks.

+Foorgut Mipants You're welcome!
Great suggestions and advice to knowledge seeking sartorially inspired reader. Thanks.
those yellow-brown shoes @ 8:53 go really well with your blazer. Actually... All of them do. So, I've learned anything goes with a light color suit!
thank a lot for the advice i was going to wear a black suit with brown shoes and thanks to you i was rescued so thanks again.
I have a pair of chocolate brown and white spectator wingtips and I have say, they go with everything except black, even with charcoal at a stretch. And the ladies love them! It is odd, I find black spectators rarely work while the brown ones just have a wonderful understated loudness.
Very informative video. Thank you.
I love Brown so that i can combine Brown shoes with Brown suits really made me happy, i didn’t think that worked!
Excellent video! I've been looking for this info for a while!
I do suggest that you us in how to take care of our tanned shoes. from what type of polish or conditioned or what type of leather shampoo should we use. I do love my tan shoe and it'll break my love for it if my tan shoe's was suddenly disfigured when polishing or conditioning my shoes
This is a great video. What about a very light gray suit with brown shoes? Thanks.
I agree with ligth tan shoes are so hard to match.
nice guide, very comprehensive
+Ping Chun Tan Thanks1
I have to start dressing better. I’m tired of the freaking over size T-shirts, jeans and Jordan’s.
same here and Ive been doing that (wrong size shirts etc) for the last 47 years!
Good man well said.
Is Oxblood the same color as the 1st shoe color you suggest there at the end? Cannot find Burgandy anywhere unless I go for a pair of Penny loafers by Allen Edmonds. Have not seen Oxblood in person.
Like you said, I only use black shoes for weddings, funerals and galas.
I don't mess with brown suits although brown looks good with my complexion. Brown suits are just too risky. Just notice how seldom they're used. On the other hand I LOVE brown shoes. Brown shoes match almost anything, the pattern of the shoe stands out and they can be used on almost any occasion except really formal events.
Raph, you should really do an event at Kosicheks in Lansing Michigan. Certinho!
I really like the brown suade derbys at 4:46. What brand are those? Or does someone have a recommendation where I could get a similiar pair?
Can i wear oxblood or burgundy shoes with dark grey chinos? It would be very helpful of you could if you could advice.
Can you suggest some wisdom for shoe car and how to polish/tend the leather? I'm new to this, my father taught me his way, but its been so long those lessons are lost. I've got some nice brown oxfords now and want to keep them well and watch that patina form over time.
Hi. Say I have a dark burgundy colored pair of shoes and I want to wear them with blue jeans. Do you recommend having some burgundy color touch somewhere else in the outfit?
What about magnet (grey) colour shoes? How do you match belt colour with alternative colour shoes?
Interesting video as usual, can you please give the references to the shoes in the video.
Black or black and white wing tips look great with jeans and leather jacket.
Thank you Sir, however I wish you can show the pictures of the color suits
Sven is there the possibility you could do on Oxblood/Burgundy version of the video?
What's the necktie knot he's going with here called? I would like to try it out but I don't know the name and, it's a pain sifting through sites teaching you "how to tie a tie" looking for a specific knot when they all show you the same ones - windsor, four in hand, simple etc. - thank you.
How do you feel about Burgundy color shoes?
I am fan of tan colour shoes. When should I wear tan and with what type of outfits?
Excellent video.
Thank you i love shoes great job
How about a charcoal threepiece, suit with a light blue shirt, orange and blue pearlescent tie and a solid orange pocksquare... with tan wingtips? I know you advised against combining tan shoes with a charcoal suit but I think the combination looks fantastic.
Quick question, where did you purchase the blazer you're wearing?
Anyone know the shoe he's holding at around 9:20? That rich burgundy red shoe looks amazing. Brand name? Style? Anything?
Hmm, now that I have found a decent pair of goodyear welted brogue boots in tan, I'm kind of unsure whether I've made the right choice. My winter wardrobe features a lot of toned down colors, mostly black, gray, dark blue and brown (only exception are my turtlenecks in camel and burgundy). In contrast to those pieces, the boots look pretty flashy.
+propa gandhi Tan is a nice color, but as you noted, it can be very contrasty. Maybe you want to add something darker to your collection next time.
Hi! With charcoal grey chinos should I wear brown or black shoe?
What is the right colour shoe for a gray tuxedo?
Went to private school and as a kid we knew which leather shoes played best for different sports like basketball cause we had to be in uniforms all the time haha
sir, i have coffee color oxford cap toe shoes, is it OK with black cropped trousers ? im not wear any suits because of my country is hot in temperature.
Love this channel
Thank you for you video; it's great! Would you wear chestnut Oxford shoes with a dark Navy suit for a wedding in the evening?
+Elmo Helmut No, because it is a wedding.
You should do this same video but with blue dress shoes and how to match them with other colors and or matching Accessories to those shoe colors since not everyone needs to stay within the brow and black motif
I'm a subscriber. I really like this channel. More power to Gentleman's Gazette. From the Man from Manila.
Thanks for the support!
6:54 those burgundy red shoes are really neat, It's a shame I never find anything remotely close to those when I'm shopping. I wear burgundy shirts very often, I think both should go well with some tanned pants
Another good video. I hereby give you the Star Wars name Brogue One! :-)
LOL
What about mid-grey pants (wool/cotton mix) with dark brown suede monks? Nice video btw, I never knew dark grey and (very) dark brown didn't work well. In my perception it does.
I think a video just on color combinations--would be very interesting
+gentleman's gazette where do you got your clothes from
Good stuff...all your videos! How can someone not like you?
Lol, thanks for the compliment.
Can you do a video on how to wear and pair purple?
Rafael, I love your video!!! I'm a bit concerned about your collar gap. Is this normal Rafael?
Hey, I know this is about brown shoes but I have one other question. On what occasion can I wear what you're wearing in this video? I think you look very sharp!
Maxwell Agbakpem Maybe you've been answered by now, but I'd say it's perfect for any refined Summer outfit or a business casual invitation.
I realize it’s not ideal, but can you wear black lounge suits with oxbloods (during the day)?
Do this for Burgundy/Oxblood shoes?
What is your opinion of the Patina sneakers?
GG, I'm attending my daughter's commencement (early afternoon) and I'd like to wear something "informal" Navy Blazer, a White or pastel dress shirt, Dark Jeans and a pair of Tan Buck's (Sherman Bro's) ... what do you think? I enjoy your content. Thank's
