M134 Minigun: The Modern Gatling Gun
Minigun in slow motion: • Slow Motion: M134 Minigun
The General Electric M134 "Minigun" is essentially an electrically-powered Gatling gun - the conceptual operation of the gun is identical to Dr. Gatling's original creation. What has changed, however, is the chambering (it's in 7.62 NATO), the power source (an electric motor), and the feed mechanism (belt-feed using M60 links instead of the Gatling's Accles, Broadwell, or Bruce feeds). The weapon was a scaled down version of a 20mm rotary powered cannon devised for aircraft armament after WW2, hence the "mini" name. It was used primarily as helicopter armament, although it has found its way only ground vehicles as well. Firing between 3000 and 6000 rounds per minute, the Minigun is ideal for aerial engagements where the gunner only has a brief moment on target and needs to fire as much as possible during that moment.
It is a truly awe-inspiring weapon, and quite an experience to fire! In addition to destroying a truck with it, we will look at disassembly and functioning of the minigun - the delinking mechanism is really the most complex part of the weapon, and a very interesting device.
Thanks to Modern Arms of Tempe, AZ for providing the Minigun for this video! They offer the gun for rental, if you are interested in trying it out yourself.

The first Minigun prop in the movie Predator was actually incredibly dangerous. It was just firing blanks, but it ejected the shells so hard that it kept cracking the protective Plexiglas they used in 80's. In fact one shell imbedded so deeply into the Plexiglas Jesse Ventura refused to use it any more until they could come up with a safer system. So eventually back in LA the studio's armors came up with a new mock up. This new prop ejected the shells slow enough they no longer were a threat. That gun would later be used for decades after in many many movies.
Time to let Ol' Painless out of the bag.
I heard that just from firing blanks they couldn’t handle the recoil

The system was very dependent on timing. the ammo drum in an AH-1 could carry 6000 rounds in a rotary drum which had a separate drive motor and slipper clutch drive which needed to be timed with the feeder and the Gun. If a gun system was properly timed and proper trigger control used by the flight crew it would fire days long without failure.

This is just like the A-10 gun. If you hear it, you weren’t the target.
To be fair, that would be true of any weapon that fires supersonic ammo.
astropapi1 not really, cause essentially all modern ammo is supersonic, what he’s saying is, if that thing is fired at you, you will be destroyed instantly, but with a normal gun you could hear, be the target or even get hit, and still hear it
@@OrdinaryLatvian 22 subsonic has game like "wha...."
Well, pretty much all modern *rifle* rounds are supersonic (.308 definitely being one of them) but unless it were a head shot they probably would live long enough to hear it, but not much longer than that. WWI era cloth belt fed machineguns would extract the round to the rear before feeding them forward into the breach. @@SanoZero It had the needed backpack, but the firing was wrong. Re5 also does not even understand the concept of ballistic and damage... Also i think there is the "wind up", and that does not make any sense...if anything there is a " wind down"
1r0zz I wasn’t claiming anywhere near re 5 being realistic, all I meant was that compared to games that let you walk with an M34 with no power source or ammunition, re 5 had a bit more thought. Also, I will say the concept of ballistics is well simulated to the degree of resident evils style. Shots to the leg causes stumbles and falls. Shots to arms cause weapons to be dropped or fail. try the double tap instead of going full auto so you can maximize your 6 hours. LOL!
Would you just look at that! Would you just look at it!
@Johan sigurdson - an hour of ammo is 180,000 rounds. Dont know what it sells for but if it is 1.00 a round, that is $180,000.00 dollars. Now i have used up 61 minutes of my 6 hour rental.
I love how there is a big ass Zip Tie holding the solenoid on, on the de-linker you used to show us how it worked🤣 Zip ties and Duct tape FTW!!
Love the history lesson and learning the unexpected electrical aspect as an electrician

@@Gordons1888 just asking, I heard that these can be used for missile defense? Is it true and what is a mini guns purpose on a ship?
@@gingergorilla695 the 20mm one is used for missile defense. The minigun is used on a vessel for shooting at anything fast enough that the main guns can't keep up
@@gingergorilla695 I mean they can I guess, we mainly use CWIS and passive defence like flares etc. Missiles go at like Mach 3+ so it would be hard to shoot one down, luckily I have never had a missile fired at me so I wouldn't know in all honesty
This guy is so good at teaching about stuff! He’s so polite, without being overbearingly nice. He also provides lots of cool tidbits, while still keeping on topic. I just really like this guy. Have a great day y’all!
We all love Gun Jesus.
He just seems like an all around great guy, and I think he does his job extremely well. Obviously, most of us who are interested in firearms hold more right wing opinions on gun control, but after several years of watching Ian I don’t think he’s ever brought politics in his videos and I really appreciate that. There’s enough of that garbage elsewhere and it’s why I don’t care for a lot of gun KZheadrs. There’s a time and a place for politics, but in my spare time I just want to sit and enjoy seeing a bunch of cool guns I’ve never heard of (obviously that last sentiment doesn’t have much to do with this video, I was well aware what a mini gun was before clicking on this video lol)
The spy is a spy
Professional, yet simple. Putting complex shit into words that the average joe can understand (albeit sometimes with a little bit of rewatching/logic sometimes) instead of what you would say when talking to a room of gunsmiths.
He produces maximum giggle factor
The "click" you hear at 6:21 is not the firing pin. It's the clutch solenoid pin resetting. You wouldn't be able to hear the firing pins because the safing cover is removed thus preventing the bolts from moving forward to lock and cam the firing pins to snap forward. Just a quick FYI.
thank you a lot for all that information.

That had to be one of the most fun guns to review.
A most fascinating and well presented video.

I got the opportunity to fire a Dillon Aero M-134. This is an amazing mini-gun.
Ive shot one several times at different gunshows
We had these on our boats. It's a tremendous force multiplier. By that, I mean you can flatten a wooded area and every human in it within seconds
you used "farther" instead of "further" to denote actual distance. Your attention to proper grammar warms my heart.
Whoever does the subtitles is the greatest, "Ian proceeds to delete a pickup truck".
I love how the same company (general electric) who makes refrigerator's and microwaves also makes aircraft weaponry that annihilates enemies lol
GE is involved in waaaaaaay more than mere home appliances. They hold a lot of military contracts and work on a ton of "secret squirrel" type shit.
And now they are making respirators for the virus patients.
@@willrose592 GE was a massive part of the war efforts of both world wars, so yeah.
The nuclear disaster in Japan, Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant reactors ,Units 1, 2, and 6 were supplied by General Electric also.
This happens all over the world with large companies. For example, the same Mitsubishi that make Lancers, air conditioning units and writing utensils also manufactured the Zeros that were flying into american ships in the Pacific

This a unreal gun , one problem that stands out is the amount of ammo needed to get on target. The plus side is really fun to use.
Always loved the minigun. And now i appreciate it
Were Ian the character in a movie, he would be the villain or hero that describes exactly what he's using to send you off. "But being this is a .44 Magnum, while not the, (strictly speaking) most powerful handgun in the world, there are single shot Thomson Contenders chambered in 45-70 government, the .454 Casull has been developed as a wildcat cartridge by Dick Casull since 1957, but putting those examples aside, and regardless, .44 magnum at this range is more than sufficient to blow your head clean off,.. luck doesnt factor into it, I was counting my rounds, but I doubt very much you were.....punk." something like that.

"You will die a little bit later if you hide behind the engine block" - Manual for surviving Minigun attacks, page 12
You made a whole manual for that? I'd think that's both an oddly specific thing, and if it did happen people probably wouldn't survive being fired at from one Lmao
@@spartanwar1185 No I did not made a manual. I was joking about what such a manual would say.... the fun part being "you will die a little bit later" clarifying it doesnt really matter what you do. You dont really survive Minigun attacks.
