FREE HDR Calibration tool for Windows Makes a BIG difference
Great MORE from your HDR display in Windows 10 or Windows 11 for FREE!
The Windows HDR Calibration tool is a FREE download from the Microsoft Store and has a good user rating, and is only about 90MB so not the usual bloatware.
The results for me were very good and the small tweaks to suit my taste were easy to dial in and this will be saved as a profile for this monitor and will be used after every reboot of the system.
Hope this is useful for some of you out there lucky enough to have a HDR enabled monitor.

Might try this setting on my OLED tv and see if I get a noticeable and improved image. Thanks for this Mike 🥰💪😇👍.
let me know if it works
Thank you for the info. Hopefully I'll get a hdr monitor some day.
it does make a difference to me, the icons and tone gradients all look better
Thank you Mike.
Had no idea this feature was there, thanks for the heads-up ! 🙂
No problem 👍
x2, thanks for sharing ol sausage fingerz!
@@mikesunboxing Me 32" LG monitor is HDR.......ran through this and youre right, the results are fantastic !
Just found out about this a couple days ago. Made a huge difference and everyone needs to try it!
it does make a big difference
Great video thanks Mike. Talking about calibration, Just been told by my doctor, I'm colour blind. This diagnosis has really come out of red!
"the red" ; good joke Paul.
Too good to be a crap joke that one lol
@@uglybob7505If I remember correctly this is a classic Tim Vine joke.
Mike do you know a real page where I can download this or even better an alternative HDR tool all I get is their usual crappy can't be bothered to do their job update error messages.
it might be built into windows fully now, try here Select Settings > System > Display . At the top of the Display screen, select your built-in display. Select HDR or Use HDR, then select Display calibration for HDR video > Calibrate.
and if i want to put to defeault the hdr and delete all profiles i make how the hell i do that microsoft dont put a defeult reset on hdr ...
If your HDR image has a pink tinge, I fixed mine by going into nvidia control panel > Adjust desktop color settings on the left side, and ticking the box for Override to Reference Mode
thanks for the info
is there option to go back to the initial setting of my laptop screen . I found its not as good as factory calibrated on my laptop.?
yes you can reset to defaults
Woo! Cheers mate!
no worries
How much should I keep the SDR brightness before this test? Does that matter?
doesn't matter really, this is more for tuning the display to your preference
Thanks for the demo of the tool. Too bad they didn't make it work in windows 10 as well, I'm sure they could have. Also one small critique. If you can lock your focus on your webcam/camera you are recording on it would be less distracting. I kept seeing your patience you must learn in chalk blur then crisp back up and it was quite distracting.
yes that is problem with panasonic eye detect auto focus, it hunts back and forth
as a digital artist I want the color to be as flat as possible and this setting sounds like something I would not want to do. Does that make sense or am I not understanding something?
that is right, HDR brings out colour much like a colourist would do, but the colourist has an idea or motion in mind, this is just giving more dynamic range really
My monitor says its hdr 400 on the box but 519 in display settings but only can get to 260 before the box disappears so should i keep it at the max nits that the monitor says it is or when the box disappears
do whatever looks best to you
@@mikesunboxing true I calibrated it to when the boxes disappear because at normal nit it would be too bright in some areas. I'ma continue to mess around with it later tho
please help! i have the g8 oled connected to my 4070 RTX laptop, after doing the calibration it says "please keep the app on just one display!!!" and won't let me save the profile! the laptop display is not active! and it set to just the g8 one!
i'll see what i can find out
have the issue be resolved? i have same issue. a tv connected to my laptop but profile is no way to be saved and app quits.
Excellent!
Glad you liked it!
I dont know why you got so many dislikes but the Windows 11 HDR Calibration Tool made sure a difference it should almost be mandatory that it be run at first setup!
i have never seen the dislikes, it doesn't matter to me, as long as a few people find this useful i have done my job
Checking monitor now.
Should I use this with Nvidia's color override enabled or disabled?
either way is fine i think
I use it Enabled, otherwise I can get pink tinged HDR content in Win11 for some weird reason.
i still don't understand the calibration. so do we want a white box with no checkerboard or vice versa?
just follow the on screen instructions, it might have changed since i did it, but i will double check and report back if that is the case
Have HDR but not Win 11. Mike's How to is Worthy of a Support comment. Like & a share 🙂
thanks william, not on windows 11 yet? i would have thought you would have adopted it by now
@@mikesunboxing I can get it for free. but i stay at Win 10 Pro. not that fast with new thing's. I'm not young any more 😅😂🤣
Yo mike this is good. It fixed the over bright on my desktop. My God. Thanks man. I had no idea about this.
It's about more than just a difference in contrast.
last 2 slides were not configured properly , am i missing something ?
yes the screen recorder can't see the image like a human does sorry
I'm not gonna lie, this works flawlessly to this day.. I didn't believe it I could have the even better color saturation than I had already, but lol it boosted the colour palette of my hdr1k even more. Why it is not built into the system? The only problem I found there's no reset to default option anymore.. You need to manually remove the files from system32 and app data folders to get rid of your settings.. Microsoft is a weirdo sometimes. Thanks for letting me know such app existed
thanks and glad it made you screen appear better
not available on windows 10 store
I updated the firmware on my wireless router last night Mike; are you proud of me?
yes we are nice one
Have a good HDR capable display (TV) and in the end SDR ALWAYS looks better than the best HDR result I could come up with in Windows 11.
Sadly this isn't supported by Windows 10, at least on my system. I've updated to the latest version and still won't let me download it. I just get the 'Your version of Windows doesn't meet the minimum requirements for this product' message. I don't want to upgrade to Windows 11 yet but I have a nice OLED that would benifit a lot from a proper calibration tool. Any ideas?!
have you done the windows updates to the H2 update recently launched?
@@mikesunboxing Yep, all up date. I remember it saying it was only for Windows 11 when it first came out but was hoping at some point that would change. Bummer.
@@storedbart3479 don't be so bummed (see my comments about HDR here).
@@PapaMav Thank you James, however if you mean your comment below about it looking worse, it would definitely look better if it was calibrated on my OLED as it's true HDR and sits at around 800nits peak. Might be time for me to jump to Windows 11 soon anyway with DirectStorage (when games take advantage of it) not supported on Windows 10, along with Auto HDR and now this app too. Gotta love Microsoft sometimes 🙄
@@mikesunboxing Mike, following on from my reply to James, any reasons (gaming or otherwise) not to jump to a clean install of Windows 11? I'd hope by this point any major bugs or performance issues have been ironed out? I have a 5800x3d, X570 Tomahawk board and a 3080. Appreciate your advice 👍
I wonder how much of a difference it makes on the fake HDR+ mode of the TV I'm using as a monitor. But I'm not willing to install W11 just to try it out. Great that you cover it though.
thank Andres
Why? What's wrong with windows 11?
I installed Win11 mostly for the Auto-HDR function for gaming on my LG OLED CX, and it's been fantastic. I would highly recommend it.
You should already be on Windows 11 even without thinking about HDR. At this point in time, there is no longer any reason to be on anything that is not Windows 11.
@@angrysocialjusticewarrior A year later I'm on Nobara Linux and not looking back. Happy new year!
Interesting tutorial on hdr settings. Sadly my tv too old...still on black n white crt haha only kidding but my sony is 10+ yrs old so no hdr. Assume this hdr function isnt just on va panels. Thanks for sharing Mike and Kath👍
thanks Nick, i actually miss CRT monitors, the colour and the look of it
Cheap way to color calibrate is to use Iphone, Iphone 6 until Iphone 10 have been tested to have perfect 100% color accuracy for sRGB content, so you can use that as a basis while dilly dallying in the OSD
win 11 exclusive? doesnt appear on my pc
might be on the latest update of windows 10, not sure sorry
@@mikesunboxing if not is they any window 10 apps u suggest?
Why cant I see this calibration box?
in the video or on your screen
can this mess sdr colours also
maybe. if you are in sdr mode but set to auto detect and if should be fine
@@mikesunboxing thank you I calibrated in hdr mode, I don't use hdr often. That's why I was asking can this mess sdr colour when I turn hdr off.
No joy Mike; while my M27Q monitor has HDR, it is one of those monitors that does not "really" have HDR and therefore changing the setting to HDR makes it look worse. I am led to believe there is a bit of this 'false' adverstising out there on several monitors. Hardward Unboxed has a good vid on what is the real McCoy and what is phony advertising and lists those that have true HDR.
sorry to hear that James, i don't understand why a company would fake HDR, it really is a dumb thing to do
@@mikesunboxing no worries Mike, it was worth trying your suggestion. There are a few instances of that kinda thing having gone on out there. I know I am missing some, but one that comes to mind is AsRock exaggerating and inflating capabilities of one of their MOBOs which was brought to like by Hardeware Unboxed. Adverstising sells (like RGB) in this industry, whether true or not. The monitor is a very good monitor and have no complaints about it at it's price point regardless.
@@mikesunboxing it is simply so that the monitor can natively receive and display an HDR signal. Even if the result is shit, it can do it without complications.
Misleading because this application isn't compatible with Windows 10 and requires 11, 22+
Is this the same concept with PS5?
i don't know sorry
Make me think about these old ads of tv showing you how better their image was than yours on your own screen.. Sadly, the tv were my Windows 11 computer is plugged is not HDR. So, I cannot say if it works or not, nut comment are good for the algorithm.
thanks Patrick, and recieved the gift today, thank you
CRAP JOKE FRIDAY !!!!!!! My wife has started smoking. So I slowed down and applied lube.
haha sounds like my laminate flooring this week
I don't want to see HDR. Since using 144hz RR 60 disgusts me. A friend of mine told me HDR (the REAL HDR) looks amazing. 😎YO MIKE!
congratulations, you have won the idiot of the day 🎇🎁🎖
thanks James and good morning
Crap Joke Friday: What is the difference between Liz Truss and a head of lettuce? The lettuce will last longer.
haha, yep the turnaround is pretty quick here at the moment, they will probably force a general election to replace the turds with other turds
This does not exist on windows 10.
another reason to use 11?
@@mikesunboxing nah. Will postpone until the end.
Didn't make any difference, i don't recommend this.
sounds like your screen was well calibrated to begin with
@@mikesunboxing Might be so. But my screen has its own display mode on top of that. Which can't be de-selected. But can be calibrated to do nothing.
They're doing it so you'll be forced to upgrade to Windows 11.
windows 11 is pretty decent with a few tweaks and i prefer it over 10
no they aren't lol and funny thing is yall want the latest and greatest tech well bloody upgrade your os from old and shitty windows 10 your missing out so many features on windows 11
