Sri Lanka: Monsoon Island - Wildest Islands - Go Wild

Lying like a teardrop in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is an island that defies convention. Poised just six degrees above the equator, it’s less than 75,000 square kilometers in size. But it has enough wildlife to rival a vast continent, and it’s all down to its complicated climate and geography.
This film uncovers how all life on Sri Lanka centres on one precious resource: water. Unusually, two different monsoons visit the island each year, drenching the windswept coastal plains with weeks of torrential rain. For the rest of the year, the animals of the plains must endure months of drought. Elephants numbering in their hundreds gather on the shores of a vast lake in search of water. Bold Sri Lankan leopards stalk spotted deer visiting waterholes. Mugger crocodiles, confined within small pools, choose the dry season to mate. Bee-eaters dig nesting tunnels in the dusty ground, and troops of toque macaques battle for status and hierarchy in the island’s ancient Buddhist monuments.
The plains rise sharply to the central highlands, where the peaks tower 2,000 metres above sea level. Up here, there’s no shortage of water all year round, and this drives diversity, just like in a rainforest. A staggering number of animals in these mysterious cloud forests are found nowhere else on earth. Purple-faced langur monkeys have grown particularly thick coats to deal with the extreme weather. Tiny pygmy lizards give birth to live young to protect them from the cold. Even within one rhododendron bush there are three unique species. These cold, wet mountains are what make Sri Lanka one of the most species rich islands on the planet.
As October approaches, the monsoon finally arrives, bringing abundant food, and relief for the animals that live on the plains.

The funny thing is I'm getting this from people who think putting down your pet dog is the most humane thing to do when it's old. Sri Lankan domesticated wild elephants thousands of years ago. Just like other civilizations domesticated horses, dogs and camels. so keep your nose out of other people's business

    • Idk if you realized but wild elephants near human settlements are extremely dangerous. The wild elephants in SL are known to destroy crops, and some have also tried to pursue vehicles because they're used to being fed when they cross the roads. Not to mention, people used them to fight in WARS in ancient times. If you're going to let an elephant anywhere near a human there has to be a mahout to keep them in check. That's just how things are. Also probably worth mentioning that SL elephants are the largest subspecies of Asian elephant :)

  • Beautiful documentary. But you missed one important ecoregion i.e. The lowland rainforests on the west side of the country. This ecoregion contains virgin rainforests that are thousands of years old. The focus of our ancient kings was to develop agriculture in the dry zone, but they never touched the montane and lowland rainforests. Western colonials (Portuguese, Dutch, and English) cut down most of these forests and turned the land into cash crop plantations like tea, rubber, and cinnamon.

Sri lankan ecosystem is a unique one to sri lanka with different species.. top predator beign the lankan leopard is a unique thing to our country.. and because of that they have become vert large with a dominant attitude.. and the extinction of tigers in sri lanka happened more than 30,000-40,000 yeas ago.. so not a practical thing to do..

Nothing in the fossil record indicates that such a transition ever took place. These birds were created by God, in the beginning with these features.
