Canon RF 100-500 Does it WORK in LOW LIGHT & with Teleconverters? SURPRISING Results!
Low Light, High ISO, Rain, can the Canon RF 100-500 succeed in these extreme conditions!? Or is f 7.1 wide open just not enough? And I didn't stop there, I also used it with the RF 1.4x & 2x Extenders in these low light conditions. I had to use ISO as high as 16000 on the R5. 4000 photos later I was quite amazed by the results!
What do you think, have you used this combo in low light? Let me know in the comments.

Good work. Always great seeing wildlife photographers not afraid to raise their ISO.
Gorgeous photos Jan and terrific review! Thanks so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
A great day out . Thanks. Great to see such clear images with high ISOs
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Jan! I really appreciate your expertise and informative videos!
You are so welcome!
Always happy to see one of you're videos pop up
Awesome :) I wish i could make more, but it always takes me a while :D
I just discovered your channel last night, but have to say I really like your style and videos. Thank you very much for these pictures, they have helped me a lot to decide for the Canon system.
Great video, good to see the combo’s work well in low light conditions. Excellent end results as well, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Nicely done. Great pics. When you least expect it - expect it!
So true!
An excellent video as always, I use the same combination and totally agree with you on low light results ..
Great to hear!
I always enjoy watching your videos very much
Glad you like them!
Really enjoyable video Jan. Amazing images.
Many thanks!
Excellent video as always, very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it
wieder einmal ein sehr gelungener Video mit einem Bildergebnis am Ende, das einem im Gedächtnis bleibt !
Danke :)
Formidable video Jan!
Thank you very much!
Great video mate, that Owl is incredible, what a bonus. Happy you had a good session with the YTBC as well. Cheers, Duade
Thanks mate!
Great video and well timed. My RF100-500 has been backordered for a few months and looking forward to its arrival. Thank you for explaining the higher fstop results - my concern.
Glad it was helpful! Hope you get your lens, soon!
Appreciate another video based on walk-around shooting - getting a sense of combining fieldcraft and how to use the lens as a birder in the field might use it (as opposed to the more photographer-centric approach of constructing an outdoor studio to design and capture the perfect shot). You make a compelling case for the R5 with this highly impressive lens, with some stunning shots and footage of the parrots especially. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! I like walking around when I can focus on larger birds, it's just not very effective for small birds
Amazing video and really great shots. Going to have to look at your editing techniques since I'm somewhat a newbie. Thank you for sharing your content.
Awesome, thank you!
Very good combo indeed !
yep!
Great video again. Very useful.
Glad you think so!
I liked the darker rain background. Love how you can see the the small water droplets on it's head and feathers.
yes, rain can be nice, even tho I got quite wet haha
I like the darker background with the rain. However I would have slowed down my shutter speed to further exaggerate the rain and lower the iso.
I like the cockatoo image with the darker background. The bird still stands out and the rain lends atmosphere, literally. Stunning set of images!
Thanks John!
Like you I just love this lens!!!
Great and informative video, with some amazing photos. Very happy to see that this combination is working this well, because i will buy the same combo. Thanks again for once again sharing your experience with us. Greetings from a Norwegian in Brazil
Great to hear!
Such amazing and entertaining birds and amazing footage!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video great kit buddy, love the fact we use the same kit as watching your videos help me get the best from it all! 😉👍🏼👌Great pics and video and well presented as always..Enjoying your masterclass by the way too.... all the best JP
Great to hear! Thank you!
Great photos. The R5 is a great camera and the RF100-500 is my favourite lens, on my camera almost all of the time. A great combination for various genres of photography
Couldn't agree more!
One word.. Awesome 👍
Thank you so much 😀
Another fabulous video Jan, the days of worrying about enough light for still images are gone forever, these new sensors open up so many opportunities. I haven’t used a tripod for about 5 years lol
Absolutely
Thank you very much, very helpful, even if i don't shoot yet birds but sports, this help me to have an idea
Nice shots and good editing
Thanks a lot 😊
Many thanks, Jan, gorgeous images. I never thought it will be possible to shoot such great stuff even after sunset and in addition with a teleconverter. Maybe I should add one TC to my gear, again , this time for the RF mount. :-) - You are an artist!
Thanks. The TC working this well on a zoom lens is certainly an exception
Looks like such a fun day to be out, Jan! Just seeing Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo's was a huge treat for me, and I definitely didn't get them down low. Maybe on a future visit. Pretty sure a 100-500mm will be in my kit eventually.
Yes, they're amazing creatures
I've watched this a few times, but had to watch again because I'm getting a 1.4 extender for Christmas. Planning to use it mostly with my 100-500, but will give it a try on my Rf800.
it will do well, especially on the 100-500
Great photos
Thank you! Cheers!
Phenomenal Jan, I bought the 100-500 after watching a bunch of reviews including yours and I agree with you. My biggest takeaway though was your comment of shooting 4000 shots. I’ve been too lazy to do that but you’ve inspired!!! Also I’m working on real camera profiles since Adobe doesn’t have one, still in process. When I come up with the right recipe I’d love to have you try it. I’ve been designing cameras for 25 years and can’t stomach inaccurate colors so I’m on a quest…
nice, I have been making some mixed profiles that work really well :)
Hi Jan, hope all is well and great review on this lens. I will be doing a review on this lens myself today for Canon in The Netherlands so pleased to find your review and amazed by the high ISO's you where able to use and the results you got. Hope that when Corona restrictions on traveling are down and i will be able to travel to Australia again we can meet up again some day. Wish you all the best! greetings, Jeroen Stel
Hey old friend! Yes it's a great lens and it would be lovely to catch up again on day! DXO Pure RAW is really a game changer for NR
@@jan_wegener I was also really impressed with the lens and capacities of the high ISO on the Eos R5
Great video, what can i say, i just love my R6 and RF 100-500 i have 1,4 TC for it and i love the combo, im a little afraid about usig high iso, but now when i saw your video so humm, why not give it a go! Thanx Jan! :)
The worst that will happen is more noise! :D And you can fix that
Great stuff, I have the 1.4tc on my 100-500. It has lived on my lens since I bought the combo. I actually have not used the lens without it and I have been very happy with the results
I find it hard to pack it away that way, but the combo itself works well for sure
a spectacle of images! hugs from Brazil
Thanks :)
Now you're tempting me to consider a 2.0 teleconverter for my RF100-500. I agree it's a hugely versatile lens with great sharpness and focus speed and accuracy
It works fine, but also don't expect the impossible :)
Great, how bless are your Country wiith all of thes so beautiful wilds birds, Thisi lens is amazing, it make a great job with the Canon R5 is the perfect complement. Thank you for share it.
Thanks! Some great birds here
love to hear more on why you did electronic shutter
I prefer the silence and the speed
I like the rain showing in the picture. Except that it doesn’t look like rain. But more like extremely tiny snowflakes or flower petals. I think you’ll need a longer shutter time to make it look like rain, so to pull it off, a tripod might become necessary. I’m really impressed that AF works with the extenders (and it makes me a bit envious). Very nice pictures as always.
Yes, good point
Great video Jan. The results are surprisingly stunning. I guess you are using the RF extenders, right?
Yes, only those will work
I wonder what is your video camera because your image quality is supetb. Always sharp and in focus.
Another R5 :)
wow it's really very beautiful👍👍👍👍😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much 😀
@@jan_wegener you're welcome🙏🙏🙏🙏😊😊😊
Great work--appreciate all the information that you have provided!!! Only down side is--it's costing me a bundle in new Canon RF equipment!!!!
haha! It's costing me a lot as well!
Great demonstration of TCs. I ordered the 1.4X and problably I will try the 2X later. Love those birds from down under. I might visit just for the birds. Luckily I am not a tennis player.
haha! Awesome
It is amazing that we can use those high iso settings now, I remember starting to get really nervous at 1600 iso with the DSLRs .I was wondering if you and Glenn could give us your thoughts on which priority settings you prefer for bird photos, Manual, Aperture, Shutter, Auto, Auto ISO….?
We did in our last video :D
@@jan_wegener WHat was the last video? Not all of us know your channel as well as you?
I just ordered this lens with the r7 and I'm very excited to see how they perform. Your images are wonderful and I'm always looking forward to seeing more content. Thank you for sharing. Cheers from Canada.
Hope you enjoy it!
Thats probably the best combination for this lens- the R7 Would have been also a dream combination of me (literally much better AND versatile than my RP+RF 800 F11) But its so pricy... and it was already hard to justify 900$ body and 700$ 2nd hand lens!
@@jan_wegener also how do you denoise your photos? So clean compared to my photos on r5
@@wcsdiaries dxo pure raw, bright backgrounds and good editing 😀
@@jan_wegener ah ok so dxo pure raw is the first step in your workflow? I am thinking about getting it. Also if you can have 1 extender which would you get for this lens? 2x or 1.4x?
I like my rf100-500mm very much ,I use it with R6 and R10. I also use it more than my ef 400mm DO ll +1,4lll extender combo with adapter ,it is so much lighter and more flexible ,and equal picture quality. Now when winter and dark days are coming I am getting 1,4 rf extender ,so I can use 100-500mm more with R6 which is so much better on high iso values.
I thought I had finally got the ideal and complete gear for my bird photography with the R5 and the 100-500. I’ve always thought the image quality penalty of extenders on zoom lens was too high. Now you demonstrate how wrong I am! Damn your excellent videos, Jan Wegener. They’re condemning me to the poor house. First the camera, then the lens, and now extenders! You are at risk of being an accessory to the bank robbery I will need to continue to fund my avarice. Cheers…. Chris
It is too high for most zooms. This one can handle it alright, even though I much prefer it without extenders.
Yep, me too - R5, now going for the 100-500. I have the 100-400 L (too short) and the 500 F4 (too heavy). I’m hoping that the 100-500 will make me happy.
Double thumbs up. I'm going to have to check out the master class, because I've got this combo (without the extenders) and I'm losing way too much clarity and sharpness upon noise reduction. (Probably because I'm using Lightroom's noise reduction rather than an AI reduction.) Either way, absolutely gorgeous shots! At first glance, I'd have no idea they were in such low light.
Great. Yes, LR is much inferior when it comes to NR than Pure RAW which I use
Great video. I got the R5+100-500 and the 1,4 extender and it works very Good.
Great to hear!
i am interested in the same combo. does it provide enough reach, even for tiny birds? do you still need to crop all your images? how about the background blur at 700mm f/10?
My personal favourate photo is the one with dark background, like the run drops adding a bit drama to the scene. I have been conservative in using high ISO, your video and photos are very encouraging! After watching your another video 100-500 vs 100-400 I've decided to trade in my 100-400 for 100-500! Good stuff!
awesome!
Impressive 😃
Thanks!
Really great video...again. I really like the rain photo that highlights the environment as well as the wildlife. Big fan!!! Keep posting. As a side note what software or process do you use for sharpening and noise reduction? I'm a big fan of Topaz as I find it does such a good job particularly in noise reduction but what is your process? I've been looking at the 100-500 for some time and this just convinced me - it's in the bag.
Awesome, thank you!
When ever I get the R camera system, I will totally get this lens.
it's very good :)
Be getting the 600 up for sale the new RF F4 is so freaking fast to focus it’s nearly impossible. I am in love with this glass finally
nice
I like the lighter photo, because you can still see the rain without sacrificing the photo.
Yup, great video Jan, and nice to see you doing some on-the-fly work with birds - pretty much what I do almost all the time (I’ve yet to find the time to do a proper set-up). Question: realistically, are these mirrorless extenders better with the new mirrorless telephoto/R5 combo than the v3 extenders were with the DSLR’s and EF lenses?
I wouldn't say the image quality is necessarily better, but autofocus is far superior with mirrorless cameras, extenders and RF lenses.
"100-500 has become my favourite lens" yes me too I got a young Robin I was about 2mtr away it was set to F8 and it filled the frame and it made 1 hell of an image no editing needed as it was so clear and sharp and then I shot a fungus low just like a macro its an amazing lens . the only down side is that restriction when using the x2 and x1.4 that you cant use the full zoom range
awesome! Yes, not being able to zoom back is quite annoying
Great video Jan. Thinking of getting this lens. I did find some people that had moisture issues after longer use. It seems the RF zooms are not as watertight because of the external zoom. I would really be careful with these lenses in the rain.
I used it in rain and it was fine, sometimes you can;t avoid it. I would expect and L lens to cope with it, but it does feel weird when you zoom and it's wet
Quite incredible really, I am very impressed at your results. I have been pushing the RF800 with my R5/R6 and it is quite simply astonishing what can be achieved with this system. Great video 👍
Totally, the new gear has really made a big change and let's us do things we couldn't do previously
its an amaxing lens! i have the canon r5 with 100-500mm, next weak i will get a 600mm f4 iii, Im so stoked to test that! but i know it wont be as easy to walk around with. Great video as always, best regards from Sweden!
Have fun!
I am a very proud 100-400 user, so yeah, I want the 100-500.
I was doing really well at resisting buying this lens until now! Superb shots!
haha, sorry about that :D
@@jan_wegener Seriously, I am awaiting delivery of the 100-500 plus 1.4 extender! Can't wait for it to arrive :D
@@Bassbarbie hopefully soon!
Hi Jan! This is an interesting and very informative video!! I totally agree about thecombination of the R5 and the 100-500. Question: In a former video you advised not to use extenders on zoom lenses? Have you come to another conclusion now? I am thinking about buying either the 1.4 or the 2.0 extender - maybe both: Which one should be first? Again, thanks for this video! Kind Regards, Jan, DK
It's an interesting question, my general view hasn't changed and even on the 100-500 I would prefer not to use extenders, but it seems like the lens can handle them well enough, which makes them a viable option. The main drawback is that you can't zoom back fully. so with the 2x it's a 600-1000mm lens. I think it depends what you want to achieve with the extenders. Generally speaking a 1.4x is always slightly better than a 2x
I’ve ordered the r3 and the 100-500 but was hesitant to get a tele converter… I think you have convinced me !
Very curious where (and when!) you ordered the lens. They seems to be sold out all over the place 🤨
@@jacobgarvelink2441 Sorry I've only ordered it, through Australian retailer "Camera House" along with the canon r3. They are both on back order / pre-order. I don't expect either of them to arrive until next year at this stage. I am without a camera and going quite insane.
Sunstudios in Melbourne always had the odd one over last few months. They night even cut you a nice deal if you mention my name :)
Jan, thank you so much for this video. I shoot with the R6 + 100-500mm lens. I shoot birds too. I have the RF 1.4x but have only tried it out twice. I've been too scared that I won't get quality photos using it. You have changed my mind! I'm going to head out today to try it. Happy Shooting! -Cathy from NJ, USA
Awesome! I wouldn't use it when not necessary, but it definitely works quite well when used the right way.
Thanks for a very nice video. I’m on the border of buying the 100-500. You convinced me that for sitting birds it is a nice lens. I wonder how good it is for birds in flight.
Just as good if you’re close
Hi Jan ; Congrats on those beautiful shots. I really like the results. This video is super helpful for me, since I just move from my Nikon setup with a heavy lens to the sony A1 + 200-600 and that is very similar to the setup you are using here. I am still learning the tricks of the autofocus system. Do you have a preference in the custom settings for the two back button for focusing ( AF-ON and AEL Buttons ? Thank you very much. If you come to South America and Chile let me know. Cheers
I am using the AF-on for eye AF and star button for spot AF atm. I have used the Sony a few months ago, great lens.
Tanks for this interesting video. I start to think about buying the RF 100-500 and sell the 100-400...
That extra 100mm is quite nice :)
wow what a video thanks jan. got my 100-500 a month a go and I am so happy with the results with the R5 soon I will get the extender one of the two still wandering which is best for me. again thanks
Thank you :)
Hi Jan! Iwe had this lens now for about a months, im really pleased, tho id wish it was abit sharper, so I have started looking into getting a used 500 or 600 prime ef.. witch one would you say is the sharpest out of the 6 that exists? :)
Thank you Jan! Very useful since I evaluate if I should switch to exactly this combo! I use Olympus M1 mark iii with 300mm and the two teleconverters today. Very nice reach (1200mm with TC20) but I'm not happy with AF and miss zoom. R5 AF and image quality seems wonderful but similar reach. I calculated that R5 in crop-mode with TC14 gives 1120mm, f/10 and a 17MB file compared to 1200mm, f/8 and 20MB. I guess R5 will be better even with higher ISO?
I would think that the R5 will be hugely improved in terms of ISO.
Jan thanks for another great video! I had written TCs off but this really got me thinking. If you had to buy only one for this lens would it be the 1.4 or 2x? I’m leaning towards 2x as I mainly shoot wildlife and birds in National parks where you often can’t leave your vehicle or manoeuvre as close as you would like.
It depends what you'd want to use it for. The 1.4x is better quality overall.
Hi Jan, another very interesting video, but it raised a few questions. You have already answered the one about extenders on the 100-500mm. The other was how would you choose to use the 100-500mm with extender or the 800mm f/11? The zoom is more flexible, but the 800mm possibly better IQ. I also thought it could be an idea for another video... How do you choose which gear to take on a shoot? (I take as much - or more than - I can comfortably carry and use little of it :-)
It's hard to say. For me personally it's easier to carry an extender than a second lens. 800 is probably a bit better overall than the 100-500 and 2x Noted the idea :)
Really good video Jan. I have just managed to get hold of a 100-500 and a x1.4 extender after a 4 month wait. Keen to try it out soon! I downloaded your Masterclass video several months ago and it has transformed the way I process my images! However the video doesn't say a lot about noise reduction which is clearly crucial for these high ISO photos. I have used Neatimage for many years and am generally very pleased with it. I am wondering what you use and whether you are planning another video on this topic?
I will, but I also made this video with Glenn on how we use NR atm. kzhead.info/sun/pJGgfaqFm2t6aqs/bejne.html Mainly by running the RAW through DXO Pure RAW
@@jan_wegener Thanks for this. Clearly missed that one. Will watch shortly. Note however I tried DXO Pure Raw recently and didn't like it. Seemed to be all or nothing with no adjustments and it oversharpened the image unless the optics module was disabled
@@stephenburch9178 you can turn the sharpening off now. There are no settings, but it does well
@@jan_wegener ok thanks. Perhaps I should take another look. Snag is my 30day trial has expired so I'd have to buy it!
Thanks, this is interesting as always. I have the R6 and this RF 100-500, and it’s great: the main problem is too many good pictures now. An advantage of the RF 100-500 is the short minimum focal distance; I like being able to get close to birds or butterflies or dragonflies with it. I haven’t used an extender at all yet. I did try using the 1.6x digital zoom that the R6 provides, and that is okay for birds that are close enough, but when taking pictures of a distant bird in a field, the images were too pixelated. I went back the next day with my older T7i, and its APS-C crop with the EF 400mm f5.6 proceed better images-at least you could see the bird. I concluded that the APS-C was better for such shots, and have used the R6 full frame almost exclusively since. I use DxO Pure Raw as a RAW converter and previewer, with the benefit of noise reduction…
Yes, on the R6, the 1.6 crop gives you a very small file
I have the same outfit. At a motorsport event recently I was staggered at the results I was getting in failing light. The R6 is so good when using higher ISO's, it really is a great combination.
Great Video again Jan. I have the R5 and the EF 100-400mm L IS USM 11 lens and both extenders. It works very well @400mm without extenders and reasonable with the 1.4x . I need to decide on a big f4 L prime lens and spend a lot of money or go for the RF 100-500 and more extenders. Part exchange maybe an option. Your thoughts would be welcome.
The 100-500 is not like a prime lens, it's an improved version of the 100-500 with better AF, IS and reach. So if you want that prime lens look, you'd be best off with as prime lens
Very nice video to the point where f 7.1 is concern for wildlife photography. I m considering shifting from Tamron 150-600mm G2 to Canon RF 100-500mm on R5 body since long. But 7.1 is the only stopping factor.
6.3 and 7.1 is essentially the same
@@jan_wegener OK, In low light photography, Does high ISO @ say one or two stop resiprocattively impact quality of image?
@@sameerkbhatt yes the higher the worse. But between 6.3 and 7.1 is only 1/3 of a stop
@@jan_wegener Thanx for valuable information.
Great work. I never have the nerve to put a 2x on my 100-500 because of lesser image quality. I am fine with 1.4x. Your editing technique is great.
Yes, it's not the sharpest, but you can make it work sometimes
@@jan_wegener so when you have the 2x on you cant zoom ou5 at all? You are stuck at 500mm?
@@wcsdiaries 600-1000mm
Amazing video as always, Jan! It seems like you prefer the 100-500 with extenders over the 800mm f11. Is that fair?
I do because it's more flexible and better for video. For smaller birds the 800 will have a slight edge.
@@jan_wegener very helpful. Thanks!
Tnx for sharing - maybe also when you put the EXIF data also list the actual focal length, tnx in advance
Good point, but I am pretty sure in these cases it was always maxed out.
Another great video. I was contemplating the R6 (still am) but it have a bit of an unexpected financial luck which opens up thinking about the R5…! Shooting in c-raw as per your previous video would be a great option as I am running on quite a bit of an older MacBook Pro. Some people say that the R6 would even be better I. Low light high iso settings, what do you think? Also why with the great boobook photos would you go to f14 and not wide open? This would increase shutter speed but maybe also increase unsharp images? (Sorry for the long comment) If only the lens would be more readily available I would have gotten it!
F14 is wide open with the 2x. I think for most people the R6 is the sensible choice and the R5 is a great luxury :) Iso wise it might be slightly better, but I didn't find the difference to be huge
Wieder Wunderbar mein Freund !! Really liked the fact that this time you were walking around, pretty much in a similar context to how I'm usually shooting. A bit more improvised shooting whichever birds cross my path, even when doing some research which birds can be found on the specific location that time of the year. I do admire your "outdoor wildlife studio" approach and what you can achieve like that, but I just can't afford the time do so. Anyway, truly amazing you found an owl within the first 15 minutes !!! These results make me wonder again whether these circumstances would not prefer getting an 2x between my R6 and 100-400Lii as opposed to the 800/11 which would need to remain in the backpack during the rain. Better a not so perfect photo than no photo at all. Anyway, first I still need to learn a lot getting the most out my new R6 and the 1.4x. When I could dream aloud, Canon should make like a weather sealed RF400-800/F10 for about 2000Eur, not heavier than your 100-500 and keeping full zoom range with extenders 😀
Danke! Yeah that owl was a crazy surprise! That could be a nice lens! You could probably wrap you t-shirt around the 800 in the rain
@@jan_wegener T-shirt ? haha, not dry enough for the 800 and too cold for me. This week I shall fit in a drive to Germany: my RF24-105L4 has arrived, so I will trade in the 70D and Tamron 16-300 to complete my transition to mirrorless. Before seeing videos from you and Duade, I long feared I would dislike the EVF compared to the OVF experience. But to my surprise I didn't feel like picking up the 70D for 1 second since getting the R6 😀 I only regret losing reach, but this being my first FF camera I couldn't imagine upfront the bokeh advantage. Thank you for convincing me this was the way to go (within my budget limitations) !!
@@WernerBirdNature nice! Exactly, the EVF is probably something I would not want to give up anymore.
@@jan_wegener Indeed, as are eye-AF, low light, ibis, buffer size, .. But before R5 & R6, all EVF's I saw were so low-res and with so much lag that I couldn't imagine ever wanting to abandon OVF for tracking birds in flight ! Whatever extra features the EVF had, if it couldn't allow me to follow a flying bird it would have remained a no go for me! You made an earlier switch from 5D to R5 .. how much confidence did you have back then about this jump in the unknown regarding whether the EVF was enough real-time compared to OVF ??
@@WernerBirdNature I thought it would be weird, but I didn't really notice the EVF at all. Felt at home right away
Hello Jan and thanks for all the videos you support us with. Where did you purchase the camoflage cover for the Rf 100-500?
I don't have one on mine, but I usually use lenscoat for all my lenses
Jan, enjoyed the video. I have a question similar to a couple already asked below. In the past reviews I've looked at, it seemed to be the consensus that cropping vs using extenders gave a superior outcome. Are you finding use of the extenders advantageous based on better autofocus that can be achieved?
It's a tricky one. You also have to looks at things beyond just sharpness. A 2x extender will give me a majorly superior background to shooting at 500mm and then cropping it. The image would just never look right. Having such great AF with extenders certainly helps. I would still try to avoid using extenders on zoom, but in case of this specific lens, they can work quite well. But wouldn't be my choice to have on there every day
Thanks Jan. Generally I prefer the lighter background, but agree the darker background is a good choice when there is rain. Could you please comment on the camera settings for the video you took. Are you using Clog3?. Where exactly were you filming? I have the same camera and lens and although I have the teleconverers, they don't get a lot of use, mainly because, as you mentioned, there is very little zoom. Also, not easy to use for birds in flight and then there is the issue with switching them in and out in a hurry.
I was shooting 4k HQ, but not CLog. 1/50 ISO 400-1000 as wide open as I could
Great video! Question how do you handle noise at so high ISO?
Remove it with dxo pure raw 4 or Adobe enhance
Jan…. Quick question. Your opinion on my next lens. I have an eosR and like to do natureAnd some portraits. For my next lens I’m looking for either 70-200 f2.8 or better reach 100-500 variable and there is nothing else in between. Is the reach of one outweighs the aperture of the other. The price is close but I don’t know. Maybe you can do a comparison with cons and pros. I can not purchase both Thanks
Great video Jan! I have this combo and it works great with close subjects but when the bird is small inside a forest a bit far away and I just want a clear shot of for ID purposes, I find that it doesn't focus even with spot AF on the bird. What could be the issue? Am I just asking too much?
Probably
Jan, great video and information. Question would the Canon RF 800mm work well? Too?
I think it would struggle a bit more, but still do ok.
Great video Jan thanks fro sharing. I have the R5 with the 100-500 and have been considering getting either a 400 f2.8 or 600 f4. Having watched your video I am now wondering if I should just get a 1.4x and 2x to go with the 100-500 instead. Fully understand I am not going to get the low light or maybe the same sharpness, but the big question for me is will I get those great soft backgrounds? Appreciate your thoughts. Cheers Keith
An extender will give you more reach, but not the look those other two lenses can give you with much smoother BGs
I would love to see this same test done with the R7, which is a crop sensor. A hobby photographer camera and one that is more affordable to many photographer.
I did a R7 review with lowlight examples
Hi Jan, do you in your masterclass teach editing in just photoshop as at the moment I’m using only Lightroom classic? Thanks for your great work, appreciate your content everytime.
My RAW workflow I show is in ACR, but it's very similar to LR. The main editing I do in PS, simply because it's so much better :)
