Runaway horses race through central London | BBC News

Four people have been taken to hospital after five runaway horses of the Household Cavalry threw off their riders and raced through London.
The horses, one of which was covered in blood, caused chaos as they roamed the city centre and collided with vehicles, including a double-decker bus and taxi.
They initially became spooked by loud construction during a routine military exercise in Belgravia, the Army said.
Officers said the horses had been recovered and returned to camp.

    • Be honest, were you actually there to see that horse running in your general direction, would your first concern have been for the horse? Perhaps it's just the white skin of the horse, but that looked like bright red blood, the kind you only get from a vicious murder.

    • Blood is of a three-dimensional colour that jumps right out at you. A cup of blood splashed onto a white wall looks like a gallon. It can be extremely disconcerting to see, and often it makes the injury look way worse than it really is. The horse is in good hands and hopefully will be as right as rain soon.

    • Horses can be funny about some things. I have a home-made vehicle that is like a motorcycle with a closed body. Overtaking a horse at low speed and a respectful distance is no problem; the horse can see that the vehicle has gone past without doing any harm and is now getting further away. Passing a horse in the opposite direction is another matter altogether; I have had to hide the vehicle behind a wall so that a woman could get her horse to go past. Police/army horses whom I have encountered with this vehicle do not seem to have the same problem. I can imagine that many horses probably had this problem with vehicles of any sort when the vehicles were first introduced.

    • @@Leo-gy7we Unfortunately, not all horses could be allowed to be in the wild again. There is insufficient land for that to happen today in today’s sprawling urban settings which now occupy the land that they may have roamed over many centuries ago. There would be a need for many of them to be culled as happens to all wild herds these days. It is a fact that horses were domesticated thousands of years ago to be work animals and they are still necessary to work on farms in areas where machinery is unable to be used due to the topography, or where machinery is cost prohibitive in third world countries because the people have to continue farming to feed themselves. Sadly, your altruistic concerns for these horses isn’t going to change anything for them in 2024. You certainly could forward your concerns in writing to the commanding officers of the cavalry units concerned. I’m sure you would receive the courtesy of a reply.

I can imagine the blood pressure of a full throttle terrified horse would create an enormous show of blood-- even from a fixable laceration. My truer concern is for their legs, pelvic, etc..
