TYGR 300 R vs PC38x

Summary: At 150 USD, the same price as the PC38x, the Beyerdynamic TYGR 300 R leaves a lot to be desired. With the exception of audio quality, which is objectively some of the cleanest and clearest I’ve ever heard, I don’t think they do anything better than other gaming headsets around this price point. And what exactly makes it a “gaming” headset? The altered sound profile? The slight orange tint on the earcups? I’m not trying to be a smartass, but I am genuinely curious what type of gamer this is for with the lack of a microphone and the short, non-detachable cable. So, while I do believe that the audio is 10/10 amazing (for an open back pair of headphones), it’s just not enough to stand on its own and make me recommend these over the PC38x, which has its own phenomenal open back audio, has a built in microphone, a volume dial, is lighter, more adjustable, and just generally better value for your money. I would love to see a version of the TYGR with a built-in or removable mic and some additional features most other “gaming” branded headsets have these days.
Also, for some reason this video seems significantly quieter than most of my other ones, so I will look into that. Might have had the mic too low on the camera.

  • The mic test 😂😂 amazing. Honestly great review thank you. Having a dedicated mic, you've sold me on the Tygrs.. having a detachable cable would be nice but I'll live.

  • You are 100% correct in just the first 5 mins of the video. For the past month, I've gone down the rabbit hole of searching for a good headphone for gaming. I've bought the PC38x, the hd 566, Tyger 300r, 58xx jubilee (just hot yesterday), my Audio Technica ATH-AD700X should be here Thursday. So Yea! And I have I use to game on beyerdynamic MMX 300. Anyone reading this just buy the PC38x, save yourself the disappointment I've indured with the rest. They have Way better sound stage"in my opinion"

  • I think your concerns and gripes here are valid, but I'd like to point out that in this video you keep referring to the Beyers as a "gaming headset" - that's not what they are. They're "gaming headphones", an incredibly niche product that crosses studio-quality music headphones with gaming-focused tuning. They're specifically for people with condenser or USB mics on their desk. The Drops are clearly a far superior value proposition and a much easier recommendation/choice for MOST gamers

  • It was between the H6 Pro, PC38X, 560S, and a bunch of wireless headsets for me. I tried a lot of them. Wish I had gotten to try the PC38X though as it's a very intriguing package. I think the PC38X with a high quality DAC dongle is the best bang for buck and portable option. That being said, I already own a XLR desktop mic (yes, flip mic is WAY more convenient) and ended up with a 560S + Magni amp. The amp comes Friday. The 560S do not disappoint, best imaging/sound stage I've ever heard. The Arctis Nova Pro Wireless I tried were a little more detailed and layering was impressive (at least on par with 560S) but that's also a $350 pair that comes with a DAC and everything else. I went back to the wire after 1 year of wireless. Comfort was the final nail in the coffin for all these wireless sets... they are heavy and do not stay on your head.

  • In case you don't know, the tygr 300r are branded as "gaming" because it originally came as a bundle with a separate mic in a box. But since many ppl already has a separate mic and/or don't wanna pay like 300$(i think) for said bundle we are finally able to buy the headphones separately.

    @animodominus1034@animodominus1034 Жыл бұрын
    • That's good to know and a fair point. Could you at least plug the headset into the mic? That might also explain why the included cable was relatively short. I still don't think it needs to say "gaming" on there though. I know it's a potentially stupid distinction, but a viewer had requested I compare those 2 based on the idea they were gaming headsets and in reality the TYGR 300R's are just a nice sounding pair of headphones, nothing more.

    • @@Y-J65 mids are better on the hd560s than the tygr and they don't distort at higher volumes which lets you play around with EQs more with the hd560s, especially the bass. The hd560s are dependent on ear shape and positioning, some people get a huge soundstage and others will get a smaller soundstage or one with 3 blobs. For me the soundstage is nearly the same as the tygr, maybe a bit smaller but much more precise. The tygrs feel and look great though, definitely feel much more sturdier than the hd560s that have the occasional plastic creak. I had issues with the drivers distorting on the tygr so went for the hd560s but can't go wrong with either, both are great for gaming and music.

  • I own both..I bought the Tygr's thinking they wud be similar to my pc38x but to me the "sound stage or "type of sound" "was day and night difference. I instantly hated the TYGR'S, idk if they came out the box with bad EQ but I was so disappointed. And im too of a noob to try EQ it properly I guess. TLDR: Folks who are on the fence, just go with PC38x. No regrets there.

    @CatarinaRock@CatarinaRock Жыл бұрын
    • The TYGR'S are better in terms of soundstage and is pretty much on par with the imaging of the pc38x. The pc38x are however more cleaner in the midbass region. EQ takes no more than 5 minutes to understand and change to a preferable sound. Almost no headphone is going to please anyones preference but I can assure you the TYGR'S out of the box has good tuning.

      @tigerleon10@tigerleon106 ай бұрын
  • I have both these headsets as well as the HD 560s, Hands down the 560s offer better imaging and staging in comparison to the Tygrs. Compared to the 38x its much closer. ID say the 38x sounds slightly more V-Shaped so better for music if you like good bass and smooth high end. The 560s have the more neutral tuning which lends itself better for gaming. The Tygrs just completely lack an upper midrange and the staging is very overrated but the imaging is good as well as music playback. They arent bad but they also are not better than either the 38x or the 560s in any way. You can also get both those for less than the Tygrs

  • I do agree with not having a detachable cable in this day and age. I have Sennheiser's, beyers, hifimans, thiaudios, focals, Audio technicas, and you would be surprised at how many audiophile headphones still screw you on cables. I have got very good at modding headphones at this point just for this reason. I open up and solder female 3.5mm connectors in both cups so I have the option of running my headphones balanced when I feel like it, which is most of the time I guess. but for the price of headphones and for how $3 it costs me in hardware to do this crap myself, this should be standard as it would not cost the company any extra money to do this.

    • Just a last note, the TYGR's were never meant to be sold stand alone i'm sure, when they first came out the only way you could get them was bundled with their actually excellent sounding desktop mic. This however is a bust for console gamers making this combo pretty PC exclusive. There is work arounds, I have for example modded my AD-500x with a detachable cable and a 3.5mm mic input that accepts generic 3.5mm mics and the cable is just 4 pole and you could use whatever cable you like but I just run a straight 4 pole for my PS4, yes the only console I have is a PS4 as I don't really console game much. But this is not something that anyone can just do without a bit of practice. Though it is very rewarding and I encourage it.

  • Do companies actually EQ so-called "gaming" headphones differently than regular headphones or is it all just how they're marketed? You'd think any good headphones would be good for gaming too. I do wonder how the Sennheiser 560S compares to these if we're going to start considering headphones with no mic in at this price point.

    @TheBucketOfTruth@TheBucketOfTruth Жыл бұрын
    • I think they do, or at least claim to. From the description of these online: ..."with true professional sound reinvented for gaming." At the end of the day these are just a nice pair of headphones and I think it's silly to put "gaming" anywhere near the name. Like you said, at this price point, with these features (or lack thereof), you may as well just start comparing plain old good headphones and not consider "gaming" at all. Someone had requested a long time ago that I take a look at these and I'm glad I did, but I just can't justify keeping them with the stable of headphones I already have.

    • Yes. They call them “gaming” bc the frequency response is designed to be more in line with what is “best” for gaming. It’s to distinguish then from all the “audiophile” frequency response headphones that are designed to be more neutral or “flat.”
