  • I remember seeing him during a chess tournament in Bad Wiessee, Germany back in 1997. Maurice Ashley seemed absolutely authentic and - unlike many other grandmasters - not even slightly aloof or vain. He is certainly one of the best commentators around today.

  • I’ve played chess my whole life. My dad taught me the rules. He also once told me that “at the end of the game, no matter who wins, all of the pieces, black and white, go back in the same box!” That’s why I love the game :)

    • @Gonzo Kaporal I knew what chess was before this interview. I just didn't care about it (and still don't). Thus, I knew none of the big names or famous matches. I replied to the original post because of the tone of "OMG I can't believe people don't immediately know " was silly and I addressed that. The fact that you're making such a stretch to generalize US culture from a 5min video says far more about your own closed mind than any other thing.
