Alan Watts - Mind Over Mind (Essential Lecture Series)
Unlock Your True Potential: Alan Watts on Transcending the Limits of the Mind
"Mind Over Mind" is a lecture from Alan Watts' Essential Lecture Series. In this lecture, Watts explores the nature of the mind and the relationship between the conscious and unconscious aspects of our being.
Watts argues that our minds have been trained to think in a linear and analytical manner, which can lead to a fragmented and limited view of the world. He suggests that true understanding and wisdom can only be achieved by transcending this narrow way of thinking and tapping into the more intuitive and unconscious aspects of the mind.
Watts also explores the idea that our thoughts and beliefs shape our perception of reality and that by changing the way we think, we can change the way we experience the world. He encourages listeners to challenge their assumptions and beliefs and to cultivate a more open and flexible way of thinking that allows for a deeper understanding of the world and themselves.
Overall, "Mind Over Mind" is a fascinating exploration of the nature of the mind and its role in shaping our experience of reality. The lecture offers insights and wisdom for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of themselves and the world.

About Alan Watts:
Alan Watts was one of the very first philosophers to interpret Eastern ideologies for a Western audience. Alan Watts was born outside of London in 1915. It was in his youth when he first discovered a nearby Buddhist lodge. In 1938 he moved to the United States where he became an Episcopal priest and relocated to Millbrook, New York,. it was here that he wrote his most pivotal book The Wisdom of Insecurity: A Message for an Age of Anxiety.
Alan later moved west to San Francisco in 1951. It was here that he began to teach Buddhist studies, and in 1956 he started his well-known radio show “Way Beyond the West.”
By the sixties, his radio talks were aired nationally and the counterculture movement had truly adopted him as a spiritual genius. Alan continued to write and travel until the end.

  • Some of his originally recorded lectures have quite poor audio quality. I’ve always wondered if I would like some of Alan’s lectures with no background noise even if it were ai and I DO appreciate it. My only advice would be to put “AI Generated” or similar in your title. The lecture is real and original and I’m sure of it because it’s my favorite from him. Thanks for your work!

  • I like the clear audio, and I really appreciate it. But idk why, the original recordings with the 'bad' audio quality have a certain charm to it, always makes me feel weirdly calm. Well actually now that I think about it I think it's the same thing like lofi music, sure the audio is distorted but they aren't necessarily bad. And same with life in general, not everything bad is necessarily bad, it's just about perspective. 👁️ Idk, just expressing my thoughts. Thank you for the video!!

  • I appreciate what you are doing with Alan's lectures. I can't really call it curating because these are the original lectures. I'd have to call it Restoration in that you are removing the crud and grime like cleaning a great painting. Some people who are very socially outgoing may enjoy the original source and sound because it makes them feel like they were there. Many introverts may enjoy the clean version because it feels more intimate, like having a conversation with a good friend. I appreciate you leaving a certain level of audience reaction and laughter in the background. This way, it can be a comfortable listening experience for as many people as possible.

  • The reason they don't discuss philosophy at the philosophy convention bar is because everyone is clinging to their own beliefs and hopes and philosophies (and philosophers) and don't want them brought into the light and stepped on (as they would be). So they just talk about the weather to keep from being "rude". A friend of mine is in academia. I told him it must be great to have peers to talk about this stuff with and he told me the same thing - no one ever does. it would be in poor taste to bring it up. I'm a bit torn but grateful for this clip. 'm an old dude who bristles at AI, auto-tuning, etc. However, I also go apoplectic when i try to listen to an AW lecture when that one person is scrawling across the desk the recorder is sitting on, or wheezing through his nose (anything with background music is a NO). The strange affectations of this clarified/enhanced audio is odd and can be a distraction but what a hell of a good talk.

  • As Alan talks about the evils of well-meaning do-goodery, what comes to mind is one of my favorite books: Howard's End. Anyone read it? In it, two rich ladies make it their business to "help" a young man and end up ruining him through their meddling, which eventually leads to his death and his wife starving in the street somewhere. Even giving advice can be dangerous, which is why Tolkien's elves will say both "yes" and "no" when asked, to let you make up your own mind.
