In 1796, at the height of the Revolutionary Wars, Napoleon Bonaparte took command of French forces in northern Italy. He was just 26 years old and had never commanded an army before. Within weeks, he had turned his ragged, demoralised troops into a ferocious fighting force, defeating the Austrians and knocking Piedmont out of the war. With success, Napoleon began to believe it was his destiny to shape the fate of nations. In this series, we follow Napoleon's first glorious campaign step by step.

    • Kutuzov didn't,and still suffered at Austerlitz Still,hotheads got their position in Alexander's army to strike preemptively while holding a very advantageous position.I personally thinks that Kutuzov must fortify that height better,into a grand fortress perhaps built by palisades and wooden stuff

    • @@maxanderson9293 At least some basic fortifications like sandbags.Napoleon spent the whole day studying his enemy's positions.Far as I know,fortifying a height with almost 100000 troops is entirely possible

    • @@vietnguyenhoang5795 Kutuzov had to attack, he couldn't defend on the hill, once outnumbered, he could have outflanked and cut off. And if he built the kind of defenses like you said the Napoleon attack would have been even more deadly since, troops of the 4th column would have been trapped between the French and their own defense when they needed to retreat.

  • It’s crazy how the Italian campaign was essentially the dream team of Napoleon’s greatest military minds even before he became Emperor.

    • Yet when Napoleon's created the first eighteen Marshals of the Empire in 1804, the choices were of equal number (nine) of the Army of the Moselle and Rhine and the Army of Italy. It seems quite obvious or that despite the Army of Italy playing the bigger role in the victory over the First Coalition, Napoleon didn't want one army to feel overshadowed by the other army and to maintain loyalty of his new empire.

    • To my oponent: I apologise for my mistake, true,Napoleon was fighting the first Reich in Italy. But it it true aswell he was against the existing Reich that he dismantled in 1806. My mistake is due to the fact that I am cut from my books for more than 10 years and rely on memories only. So, I am right in the sens of absolute truth. I do my best with what I have at my disposal, Thank you

    • Austerlitz has received a lot of attention but the Italian campaign still has a lot of terrain to cover. Austerlitz is Napoleon's masterpiece, I am among those who wish to know more about his early years in command. :)

  • Masséna really was one of the great French looters of the era and it really hurt his campaigns half the time. A huge part of the blame for inciting so many Spaniards to rebel falls completely on him. A wizard on the battlefield, but an absolute tool when it came to ensuring compliance from the local population and actually ruling them

    • Massena and Augereau were from poor, impoverished backgrounds, not gifted with Kingdoms like Murat or Joseph to rule as their own. This doesn’t exactly excuse the fact they were extortionists to the max, but it goes a long way to explaining their behavior. Greed is a hard vice to ignore, especially when you can satisfy that vice with the barrel of a musket or point of a saber.

You can see what a big impression the first victories made on him. Update: I made a mistake, it wasnt his last words, he said that 3 days before his death. But still interesting

  • I have seen a lot of Napoleon content and documentaries over the years. I have ready many books about him. Nothing and no one even comes close to how well-made, informative, concise, accurate, and interesting EHTV's series on Napoleon is. This channel is the gold standard for Napoleon content.

    • If you have not already read it, I strongly recommend "Napoleon The Great" by Andrew Roberts. It is a very interesting, detailed and informative biography of Napoleon's life and campaigns. The audio book version is also very well read (how I listened to it while at the gym).

    • Why would you need to learn this in school? It’s interesting, yes, but precise knowledge of napoleon’s troop movements is probably completely irrelevant to your life. Teaching things like the effects of the French Revolution socially and politically are much more important.

  • I am almost sad Ridley Scott is doing a full Napoleon life story in one movie I feel that is almost impossible. In my opinion he should’ve done Napoleons life to the end of this campaign and then started a part 2 going on part 3. His story is just too epic and long to be put into a 3 hour movie. Thoughts ??

    • the movie format is probably a poor choice for Napoleon's life story. If they really want to do it justice, a well produced long miniseries would be more suitable. There is just far too much he did, both military and civil, to be glossed over in a few hours.

  • Napoleon Bonaparte is my favorite and inspirational character. What a career he s had. One of the best commanders the world ever had. Over sixty battles just lost only 8 or so battles. One of the best tactians ever. Bold and always courageous leader who gave a code and also a law which has his name and still used by the world. EHTV thanks for creating these videos. Thnks for all your hard work and dedication also all the members and crew of ehtv . One of the most thrilling episodes ever. After watching these videos i used to search all these things and now had a great knowledge about Napoleonic era. Thnks also for it EHTV. Also after you showed some osprey books i started to read them . They are brilliant books. A huge fan of you from Sri Lanka ❤️🔥.love you guys.
