I agree. But as an up and coming carpenter, I'm always trying to tool up. I could argue he has some old time drill I haven't seen. Sure did a good job on that knife though
What this video doesn't show you is how long this would take. Using a filing jig takes bloody ages, i really struggle to stay motivated while using it.
You could buy a cheap drill and grinder and do this in a lot less time but I respect the fact he had the patience to use no power tools
This is by far the best channel I've found for practical shop applications and engineering. So many other channels will show you the same things, but they do it with their $1500 Festool power tools, or their $10,000 lathes, with their $20,000 filtration systems inside of their $150,000 shops. Mazay shows that you can make all of those things on your own at a fraction of the cost and be able to produce the same results with some determination and hard work.

@@woodforthetrees3496 It's really more about what can be produced with what you have on hand. It's very practical, actually. Do you have a forge in your shop? I don't. I'd like one, but I don't have one currently. Not that the forge here is very prominent, but it is part of the execution.
I respect the hell outta this. I guess the truth is you can use $150 tools to make a $1500 knife or you can use $1500 tools to make a $150 knife
You can do 90% of this with a $80 4" grinder
At the end of the day, it's all coming from one finite currency. Time. Either put time in to make the money to make it go faster, or put the time in to manually craft it without tools. Time is the currency we all start with but cannot make any more of. So either way you're going to pay the price. Just a different perspective to consider.
It's by no means a "new" video on how to make a knife out of an old file, but THE FACT YOU DID IT WITHOUT ANY POWERTOOLS makes this totally awesome!!!

Сижу думаю сделать себе нож из напильника , но у меня нет горна , нет гриндера . Сегодня понял , у меня просто нет желания его делать ! Отличная трудоемкая работа 👍

Вообще-то у каждого нормального мужика в 21 веке електродрель, лобзик, болгарская и шуруповерт должны быть. Чувак просто решил завязать себе мозги. Это стало ясно, когда он взял в два раза больше накладки и отрезал в два раза длиннее клетки, а потом геройски их напильником стачивал)))
I have a LOT of respect for this guy. Going at it old school and the resulting knife is amazing! I've made knives with no power tools, so I can relate. He wanted it, applied incredible effort, and made it happen!!! My hats of to ya!!!
If I'm not mistaken an electric drill is a power tool. Nice job though.

Post-grid collapse would have precluded use of oven, vac cleaner, camera and KZhead. Do not wish for postapoc shit. You may get more than you bargained for.

Нож если и делать из напильника, то его надо хорошенько отковать в кузнице, а то что он его нагрел и в масло- это полный бред, вот после ковки будет отличный нож для похода

I've watched a lot of knife making videos on and off over the years, but I've been put off by the expense and need for equipment. This has been the first video I've seen that seems attainable for the beginner who can't shell out for what's required. (This is the first video I've seen from this creator). Thank you - you've given me hope that I can enjoy knife making on a budget.

I like that you left a bit of the file pattern. The pattern works well with the angular shape of the tanto blade. Looks good.

This is so freaking helpful for me. I'm working on worldbuilding for my D&D world, which technology wise is situated smack dab in the middle of the enlightenment era. This one video has given me a ton of ideas for how metalworking would work in a setting with magic, but not reliant on it
It's a little bit older than enlightenment era, but the channel Primitive Technology may give you some ideas for more remote areas and/or "off grid" NPCs bootstrapping their own tech.

I thought I'd catch him using at least one power tool; but I find it a bit ironic the description calls it "easy" when he uses an old German breast drill that you'd need to go out of your way to find. It's probably easier to buy a cheap electrical drill than to find a drill like that. However, he does use a torch. I'm not sure that's what I'd call "by hand," and isn't a basic tool most people just keep around.
That's what I call dedication. I've worked with all kinds of blades. Different types of steel. And this has to be one of the hardest. And time consuming. Great work

Best knife I'v ever seen made from a old file with basic tools, when I say that, I don't mean that in a cheap way, a lot of work went into that creation of a knife that will last forever, and that can be handed down through time, who ever gets that knife will be very humble....

Да и вдобавок может и времени полно или заказов нет временно. Может на заказ он воспользовался бы ими , но не в этом случае. Хотя если бы я делал, то конечно бы использовал электро приборы. Просто я ещё со школы не люблю шкурить металл! Когда я вижу что шкурят металл руками , у меня до сих пор в памяти уроки труда, когда нам учитель давал молотки шлифовать это было для меня самое не интересное занятие!

Не знаю какое слово тут подойдёт... хотя может кому-то и нравится - каждому своё
@@iliyawergbitsky6226 честно говоря я не разбираюсь в прочности металла. Какая самая прочная или какой металл теряет свою прочность после закаливания. Я же говорю он просто делает для себя, хотя возможно на заказ. Я видел у него есть любой инструмент! И токарный станок и дрель, и ленточный шлифовальный станок , короче все есть для работы по металлу и дереву.Он наверное показывает, что даже без станка можно сделать красивый нож.

I cant speak for the maker of this knife, since ive never done something like this completely without power tools. But if your willing to use an angel grinder youre probably looking at 15-20 h. Maybe longer if you still have to figure things out.
I used an angle grinder to cut and shape my blade, but also had many hours of filing and hand sanding too. This guy is no rookie.

Наконец-то увидел стоящее видео! Даже дрель ручная. Обычно в видео инструкциях по изготовлению ножей у мастеров оборудования всякого вплоть до лазерных маркеров. Я пожалуй попробую сделать. Правда от болгарки и электродрели со шлифмашинкой отказываться не буду😊
