How Temu Makes Money From $10 Smartwatches From China

Bargain e-commerce company Temu has had a whirlwind 2023.
Quietly launching its app in September 2022, it only took the company a few weeks to top app store charts, edging out Amazon, Walmart and even fast-fashion brand Shein. By February 2023, the 5-month-old company made its TV debut during Super Bowl LVII, airing two commercial spots totaling an estimated $14 million. With an annual advertising budget of about $1.4 billion, Temu is focused on aggregating a user base of nearly 100 million people by year-end.
Temu's popularity is largely due to its ultra-cheap knockoffs. Users can get an Apple Watch dupe for $10, Yeezy knockoffs for $4.99 and gaming consoles for $20. On top of the steep discounts, users are bombarded by coupons, free shipping countdowns, flash sales and discount wheels.
While on its face the company looks to be a Boston-based startup, it is actually backed by a well-known name in the Chinese retail space, Pinduoduo.
"China is really the linchpin in Temu's strategy," said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail. "A lot of the products that are sold on Temu are manufactured in China. They're shipped directly from China to the U.S. So those labor costs compared to manufacturing in the U.S. and elsewhere are really low."
Temu's rise in popularity has also courted scrutiny from the U.S. government, accusing the website of exploiting de minimis shipping rules to undercut U.S. retailers. Under de minimis rules, shipments valued under $800 are not subject to duty taxes and undergo minimal customs checks.
Beyond that, a U.S. House committee accused the retailer of violating U.S. import law by using forced labor to supply its products.
Temu and Pinduoduo did not respond to CNBC's request for comment.
Watch the video above to learn what's behind Temu's success and what could disrupt the retailer's massive growth in the U.S.

  • The fact that China can produce an actually functioning smart watch for less than 10$ is absolutely insane. That's the price of a handheld toy, not something with a microprocessor inside it. It could be the worst smartwatch ever. But for 10$? It's a tech marvel.

If I can buy a $300 smartwatch and you can't then I look better than you but if you can now buy one for $10 and it does half of what mine does, now I'm not so special am I?

Congressional investigators also believe Temu is illegally selling products made by forced labor in Xinjiang, where the Chinese Communist Party is committing genocide against the Uyghur people. Uyghur peoples who are imprisoned and enslaved in concentration camps are being forced to create much of Temu’s goods.

But after doing my math, I would have a unit cost of at least double than if I had imported a larger shipment. Which only makes sense because the larger your shipment, your unit cost goes down. This use to be a competitive advantage that US based sellers have against foreign sellers on sites like Amazon and eBay. • The U.S. NEVER mentioned anything about the EXTREMELY HIGH profits made by the American importers, wholesalers, and retailers through global sourcing. Temu's advantage doesn't rely on labor cost or tariff, which won't make that much difference from other type of international trading. The real savings come from somewhere in-between. For instance, a shoe at FOB $3.00 turns out to be $9.99 on the shoe racks of discount stores, or even $15.00 in the department store. Where did that $6.99/$12.00 go ? The retailer's cost is usually only half of the selling price. In-between, the additional charge goes to American importers and wholesalers. China has only earned the smallest fraction of the whole chain, as the Amercian buyers are over-too-good at "killing" the price. It is the U.S. importers, wholesalers, and retailers who have grown their EXTREMELY HIGH profits ever since outsourcing in China. As people of God, it's really a shame for being a burglar while pointing China as a thief.

  • I think a lot of this push back is, in the back of their minds, politicians know we have a competitive problem and use alternative narratives to avoid just acknowledging that AS the root of the problem. Back in the 50's, Japan had a reputation for shoddy goods. They improved quality and offered better prices. Even in the 70's, Japanese cars were not the thing they are now. In the 80's you got that Gung Ho movie (with Micheal Keaton in it, a 'pop' reaction) as we struggled this with what's an identity crisis in where the U.S. stands in manufacturing. The torch is passing still and will continue. I expect India will be the next push-back as they are a rising technological power as well. What's ironic is a LOT of what we've preached to these countries regarding manufacturing that's made them so competitive are things we've failed to follow through on ourselves (complacency).

There's a lot things that can harm for our health from dangerous material yet they can get away with it because it's not consumable. And yes you can find $10 watches, that should be only strap band price. If you have to buy something make sure to know what campany from, what material they used, and there's product number. Some company here start to realize some smart consumer and they tried to used safe material and added QR code for authenticity. Please use this type of product. Simply make the companies pay the sales tax (in our case 10% on everything) on their total sales & they'll figure out how to set up their site to bill consumers for it :). Interesting long term outcome of that & the pandemic & shipping delays & national pride & care for each other has been a lot of small scale sellers setting up in Australia & now being legitimately able to compete with the overseas sellers on price. Normally marginally higher, due to higher postage rates here, but more than worth paying when considering the faster delivery time & also better consumer guarantees in the case of faults with the product or any other issues

The US is passing laws because they are saying that the factories are acting "against human rights" and because of that, Temu should not be able to sell to the US market? So, the country that has Amazon, a corporation that forces their delivery employees to pee in a bottle inside a truck is claiming that other countries do not treat their people well enough to sell goods to the US? The country that are passing laws to allow children to work at night is saying that China is the one that abuses their citizens? The country that has private prisons which profits from forced labour is the country who accuse other countries of bad behaviour. I see... I love this free market. • I am Chinese. It‘s not the same scale of abuse... Chinese workers only earn 1-2$ an hour. No health care No unemployment insurance NO EVERYTHING. The legal lowest payment is 3$ per hour, but most employees ignore that. Why not Chinese workers fight against that? You guess what? if companies do not pay at all, the government wouldn't care. If you sue the company, there will be no response in years. My friend and all her coworkers only got 1/10 of their money with three years of lawsuit. If you protest? You are MALICIOUSLY demanding pay! YES! Your hardworking earning, you want it back, you are MALICIOUS! You'll get yourself into jail if you do not stop protesting and stop saying things online. And with China's economy collapsing, the unemployment rate raise. Bosses don't hire anyone above 35 years old anymore. That's in the government's recruitment requests, too. That's how abusive China is now. The Western news channels only know about Xinjiang, They don't have a clue what the hell other Chinese is living in. I'd like to make a youtube channel to show all those things to the world. But I'm afraid. Even if I escape China, they'll use all my family and friends' safety to threaten me. But I still recommend you shop in Temu. because if all those workers stop working, they'll starve to death. Nobody would help them. Not their poor family. Not the gov. All religious groups are under the control of the gov. The charity all belongs to the gov and is extremely corrupt. You shop in Temu, and they may get to live one more day. That is so sad. I am sorry. I shouldn't ask you that. I just really don't know what to do to tear down the hell.
