The Russian Winged Orbital Launch Vehicle, a visionary project by the Soviet Air Force, aimed for a horizontal takeoff/horizontal landing, reusable space launch system akin to conventional aircraft. Developed by Mikoyan from 1960 to 1976, it featured a reusable hypersonic air-breathing booster, two expendable rocket stages, and the Spiral manned spaceplane. Hindered by inadequate government funding, it only reached subscale flight tests by the mid-1970s. Development ceased in 1976, giving way to the Buran, a Soviet version of the U.S. space shuttle. However, the concept saw a resurgence in the 1980s as the MAKS spaceplane, embodying technological evolution and human perseverance in aerospace innovation.
Haze, this is magnificent. I can't begin to imagine how long you worked on it, but it was most certainly worthwhile. I salute you sir - a true artist. 👍👍👍

0:43 The Myasishchev M-4 taxiing in the background on the left was a nice touch!
This is not just M-4, this is VM-T (a M4 modified to transport large cargo on its back, like the Shuttle-carrying Boeing 747)
@@user-ek1fq3if7g thanks, didn’t know the designation for that version.
I am always amazed at the quality of the images in your videos.
Thanks for the interesting video. It was a cool project!
Amazing work
Absolutely beautiful as always
Beautiful art as always!
Daymn, you've absolutely excelled yourself with this one! So many moments that could be real footage, and I love the shockwaves on the re-entry segment.
Great video! I love the super shiny launch vehicle and booster. My only note is on the nuclear payload, the rocket exhaust should be a much wider spray.
If a vehicle such as this was developed, I think bombing would be at the very bottom at the list of practical uses. I don't see any advantage this gives over an ICBM. But for rapid and low cost access to orbit, it would be incredible! And of course excellent work as always on your end. I like the (mostly) focus on camera angles that could actually be obtained.
Nice use of the MSFS ;) And incredible modelling on the spacecraft system itself. Do have to say some of the VFX did not match that usual quality level of yours and took me a little out of it, like the heat blur during the runway start sequence
Some of your finest work.
so many fine details. From the slight wing waggle down the slightly uneven runway to the marks on the canopy.
Magnificent - Unbelievable that it is a 50 year old technology.
The subscale, flight test model, BOR-4, was flown in the early 1980s. Four orbital flight tests were done between 1982 and 1984, launched from conventional rockets. No full scale, flyable space plane was developed though.
Imagine how good it would be for humanity if all countries cooperated in space, and not competed. We would have lived on Mars by now, I have no doubt.
Except this literally isn’t a case. There was an episode when two superpowers were competing all the time and progress was mindblowingly fast. There was an episode when they cooperated and resulted in constant budget cuts, shortenings and eventual devolution.
@@oliwierkwiatkowski8817 There was such progress because the USSR was a socialist state. But this is not the whole world, it wasn't even 1 billion people, but I meant the whole planet, collective cooperation.
@@MrCraigfess Ah, in this more-of utopian sense, then absolutely, united and focused on one goal humanity would always achieve it - but it's nothing more than an unrealistic, impossible dream unfortunately.
@@oliwierkwiatkowski8817 I think it is feasible, but only in 100-200 years :)
@@MrCraigfessthat had nothing to do with it. Why do you think the US won the cold war? Because they simply decided to outspend Russia. Their economy was able to sustain an unimaginable amount of R&D even if it was just for show. That's because the US is a capitalist country. Communist Soviet Union wasn't able to keep up with this and it's a large reason it eventually failed. And as in regards to global cooperation in space. We are doing so in the areas where it's sensible. But other than observing and mapping space there's not much where cooperation has many advantages compared to a healthy competition. It was literally the competition between the Soviet Union and the US trying to first reach space and later the moon which drove the whole space race. Cooperation would likely have gotten us nowhere at that time. And now the days of the private space industry have come. So the time for governments to be involved in actually occupying space is over. Private companies from any nation can compete now which opens up a whole new range of possibilities. Not to mention millions if not billions of jobs in the future. Cooperate where it's necessary sure. But competition is the ultimate driver for human progress.
Wow. The chase plane sequence was especially nice, and the lighting during the landing sequence was glorious. Clearly, given the missile launch, this is part of a movie, with either a East/West conflict, an alien attack, a rogue comet, or some gigantic Soviet Godzilla rampaging. I insist, insist mind you, on seeing the rest of the movie. With excited Russian in the background. Magnificent!
+1 to Kaiju
Love the little touches like cranking the volume when the jet exhaust plumes pass the camera. What's taxiing on the other runway in that shot? Looks like a cargo jet, but I didn't see engines to determine which one. So maybe another retro-future concept from a past or future video?
It's a Myasishchev VM-T
@@Scramjet44 I think it's an AN-225, but IDK

Myasishchev VM-T is my guess 🤔
Great video...👍
sorry to not be too interested in the MIG at launch but. What is that plane on the Taxiway??? Looks like a weird amalgamation of U" Comet and Antonov looks very interesting :P

Gotta love that polished metal finish on the Soviet aerospace designs. Is it aluminum or stainless steel? I'm guessing it's the latter given the launch configuration and at takeoff. Thanks again, Hazegrayart. Simply magnificent! 🚀🚀🚀
I was just thinking the same thing. That look is classic.

Nice!
Dream Chaser😊
Its a wonder that the carrier aircraft had enough fuel onboard to reach the end of the runway! Very cool animation and a good overall concept. No resorting to a "Rods from God" payload either 😉
I don't even know that the Mikoyan MiG-105 "Spiral" was a space Interceptor not an experimental space plane
All soviet tech was military-first, no exceptions there.

Yes, that is the project "Spiral". Plans for the spaceplane from this program were sold to the americans in 90s and, later, revived as Dream Chaser

Great video. Perhaps you could do the Johnson Space Center's Shuttle II concept sometime.
Super
for once I thought it was the Dream Chaser from Sierra Space 🤓
This is his grandfather!😊
It's at least inspired by this, or whatever this was inspired by as well (wasn't there an earlier US napkin project?) And well, also, physics. So happened than if you want a mini-shuttle, it ends up looking like this because this is the shape that does the job.

And what was VM-T Atlant doing at the airfield? This aircraft, for the transportation of blocks of the Energia-Buran system, will be rebuilt from an M3 bomber (An-225 Mriya, from Antonov, did not have time to meet the deadline, which is why it was necessary to urgently make another transport aircraft). That is, at the time of the development of the Spiral, this aircraft was not even in the form of a project.
Hey, Thanks for creating Con-Trails, instead of Chem-Trails 😎👍👍
grandissima tecnologia
Good Job
This remember me the airplanes in Thunderbirds!
3:03 does it drops a nuke ? Outstanding as usual, nice to see Spiral "flying".

Interesting. However I was supprised to see that the airfield buildings swapped sides of the runway between the taxi and take off and the climb.
Great job. Tremendous appreciation
An amazing conception. It's understandable why this contraption wasn't funded but it would have changed the direction of everything if they'd pushed it through. Not buying the skids, though.
The skids are not that bad when used as intended: lubricated with halved watermelons.
From 0:35 to 1:20 - is that a Myasishchev VM-T in the lower left corner? The small Soviet spaceplane looks as similar to the Sierra Dream Chaser as the Buran looked similar to the Space Shuttle. Maybe, Sierra Nevada Corporation got their from the Soviet spaceplane plans - just like the Buran engineers were "inspired" by the STS?...
There's been a lot of copying in all directions in that particular area of aerospace... US, Soviets/Russians and Europeans all had designs for small lifting-body spaceplanes, and all were very heavily influence by what the others were doing.
Very optimistic to think there would be a base for this to land at after an orbital bombing mission, but I will say the visuals were nice.
I love it,the Soviets are true imagineers . They must of got a hold of some Fireball XL-5 Tapes, and ran with them.

THE SPIRAL! IT'S HERE!
I doubt the rocket would go streight down, it's more energy efficient to go retrograde first - sinking the orbit - and then doing corrections as you go down by gravity alone.
Now they have to resurface the runway ?
I want to be flying this
красота
Looks like something Delboy would be driving round in, 😅
One of the best Mikoyan that never Gurevich'd.
