The Power of the Human Sense of Smell | Jasper de Groot | TEDxHotelschoolTheHague
How good is the human sense of smell really? How to humans communicate through the sense of smell? He studies the human sense of smell, most notably its often-underestimated social function.
The central question is: How do odours influence our (social) behaviour? He researches this in various ways, from psychology (emotions, perception, behaviour, psychophysiology) to neuroscience (fMRI) and more recently genetics and chemical analyses. In addition, he investigates how important the role of smell is in romantic relationships and how loss of smell (common with COVID-19 infections) affects our quality of life. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I reckon our sensitivity to the smell of gas is because it's activating the same system for detecting rotten food (odourised gas smells like rotten eggs)
