Virginia school board approves a proposal to restore names of Confederate leaders

The school board in Shenandoah County, Virginia, approved a proposal that will restore the names of Confederate military leaders to two public schools. The measure, which passed 5-1, reverses a previous decision in 2020 to change the names of schools that had been linked to Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee and Turner Ashby.

  • Here's the truth behind this issue kids: these southern general names on schools and southern general statues (some of which have been removed) were not named/erected just after the civil war. They were put up at the time of the civil rights movement in our country. Your parents and grandparents were witness to this, they can tell you. It was done as a way to bully the black americans at the time, to give them fear as they fought for social justice and equality, a way to intimidate them for having the balls to speak up for themselves. It was and still is an affront to what our county was founded on: freedom. I graduated from a Robert E. Lee high school (the name has since been changed) and I always knew that the naming was on the wrong side of history. We should be building ourselves up and making a better future both for ourselves and those who come after us. Let the mistakes of the past die and live on only in the history books, we have bigger and more important problems to focus on now.

  • If this school board wants to honor Virginians from the Civil War period, why not choose from many who served their country (the United States) with honor and fought to end slavery (Elizabeth Van Lew, Admiral David Farragut, General George Thomas, Winfield Scott, etc)? Why is there such an emphasis on honoring Confederates when there are numerous loyal and patriotic Americans from the Southern states that deserve the recognition instead?

    • The Confederate constitution was largely identical to the Union constitution at the time of drafting, though it gave the president a 6 year term and a line item veto, and gave states more power to propose amendments. It also explicitly supported slavery though it banned international slave trading, stances with which many southerners today still agree, so it is in the school board's character to act as it does in this video.

And then you might find out that men like Robert E Lee didn’t believe in slavery, and they didn’t fight for that. They fought for the over taxation of southern agriculture and then having those taxes spent north. While northern businesses received tax breaks. They fought for states rights, that there was a point where the federal government could overstep…which is what we were founded on. You know this country called Britain and a Queen, who over taxed the colonies to pay for their wars and invasion into other countries. Or maybe you enjoy paying taxes and never see those dollars at work… I’m guessing you vote democrat. I mean they are the original slave owners and the founders of the KKK

The South had their reasons too, and they weren't ALL about slavery (THE DEBATE OVER TARIFFS HAD A LOT TO DO WITH THE SOURING OF RELATIONS BEFORE THE WAR TOO). After all, slavery's long over, but we're still divided and hating on each other. Kinda proves my point. The North and South have always viewed the role of government in enforcing its morality in individual lives differently. The North, thanks to Puritanism, favors it. The South, thanks to mercantilism, opposes it. That was the root of the struggle in 1620, 1861...and sadly is still the root of our political divide today. We've learned that little about each other in over 400 years. That's what's truly sad. We're still growing apart. If it continues, I fear the nation's survival. Get some good books and really read about what led up to the Civil War, and not just parrot what both sides said to try and justify the disaster afterwards. There's dirty hands on both sides, sadly. After all, the same heroic Union Army who defeated the South is the exact same Union Army that slaughtered the Native Americans for a solid 10 years immediately afterwards. Proud of that? I'm not.

Despite what you might believe about the North's motivations, a significant motivator for the North attacking the South was wealth. (similar to the motivation behind Biden's every decision) The north's economy pre-civil war was failing, where as the South's being based on agriculture was prospering as they traded on the global economy. Also keep in mind, North America had adopted the use of slaves at a far lower rate than any of their agricultural competitors. Not only that slavery as a practice came to this continent from Africa, where it was widely practiced at the time and in fact is still practiced to this very day.

If the name of the schools were changed legally back in 2020 there would’ve been some people upset but it would have been long passed by now. I could care less what the name of the school is but if you research what was done 4 years ago you’ll quickly find why this happened and realize that this was going to be the result. As you watch these school board members make this decision and infuriate 6 percent of the county understand that 4 years ago every citizens right to due process and democracy were blatantly ignored under the cover of Covid by the school board that was made up of the polar opposites of what we have today. Also if you watch the 4 years of school board meetings leading up to this you’ll see some racism you’ll see some outright cry babies but most importantly you’ll see one side saying it’s ok to break the rules when it suits us and the other side saying we’ve had enough. Either way this isn’t over and all in all it’s pretty entertaining I think next meeting I’m gonna go and bring up the idea that the school needs 2 names. Why not? People are doing it to their kids.

  • Many confederates fought simply because the Union (federal government) started the war by trying to impose on state's rights. -Slavery in America eventually would have ended on its own due to technological developments. -There were far more slaves in Africa itself than in the U.S. and slavery is still ongoing in some parts of Africa. -The Trans-Atlantic slavery trade originated in Africa and was started by Africans, Africans who sold or traded other African slaves to Muslim, Jewish, or European merchants. -One of the largest genocides to ever occur in human history was the Bantu expansion in Africa, where Bantu people murdered, pillaged, and enslaved their way throughout much of the African continent.

    @LizardHouse@LizardHouse13 күн бұрын
  • Virginia was part of the confederacy for four years: 1861 - 1865 & VA restoring confederate names to a school is not shocking, but no one should be compelled to honor names of those who fought to maintain the odious institution of enslavement because VA chooses the 4 years of the confederacy over the 246 years of enslavement. That one girl’s objection to the violation of her constitutional rights should suffice in preserving the neutral names, but no one questions or challenges how supporting a confederacy (before the Reconstruction Amendments were in full force and effect) is mutually exclusive of the dehumanization and deprivations of the Dred Scott decision. De jure discrimination based on race was at the heart of the case of Loving v. VA in 1967, and until there is truth and conciliation, these badges and incidents of slavery will persist in 2024 and into perpetuity. Virginia has proven that it has a compelling state interest in perpetuating false narratives and the doctrine of white supremacy. The schools’ names lasted 4 years as did VA in the confederacy.

  • Interesting how those so loudly defending "democracy" today are also mostly those most disparaging the democratic process at work here. The removal of the names from the schools was done by a democratically elected school board and now the re-en-statement of the names has now also done by a NEWLY democratically-elected school board (for the name changes were THAT unpopular with the public). I live in the neighboring county to Shenandoah County in the Shenandoah Valley of VA, where Stonewall Jackson fought his famous 1862 campaigns that are still taught in military academies worldwide as THE quintessential masterpieces of asymmetrical warfare. Nobody here STILL favors slavery, racism, nor wants to go back to Antebellum times. That's ridiculous and not the point. Nobody suffered more from that war than our ancestors here who lived through it. But we do want to remember and commemorate our past, good and bad, for IT IS A PART OF WHO WE ARE, good and bad. Facing those complexities are the key to personal growth and our growth as a nation. So, we should not do as tyrants do and purge them, but do as free men do and FACE THEM, openly, repent of them, repair the evils as best we can, and yes, celebrate and keep and remember the good in these men as well. Neither Jackson nor Lee were the devils modern critical theory practitioners mindlessly chant, nor were they the saints as some Neo-Confederate "Lost Causers" insist either. They were exceptionally able and at times very noble, but flawed men living in a flawed age (if you look into it, you'll find that both men eschewed racism and slavery, as much as their time and place would allow) ... Well, we too live in a very flawed age and are very flawed individuals. We could use a few more such noble and able men of conviction today, now that slavery is over and racism is as extinct as the law can ever really make it be. Or at least we can use a few more men & women who FACE AND LEARN TO UNDERSTAND such complexities, rather than childishly and ignorantly bury and ignore these difficult but essential lessons of history.

  • Each person's feelings about this come down to their understanding of the history behind those men and the war they fought. This war didn't follow simple lines and was full of complexities on both sides. It is absolutely worth reading about in a time when most people would prefer to be told what to feel. It was a war between two slaveholding nations. Robert E. Lee, who opposed slavery and favored the Union, had been offered command of the Union Army by Lincoln and declined because Virginia was his home. Lincoln was willing to grant more decades of slavery in order to preserve the Union. Virginia had voted to remain part of the Union until Lincoln decided to use force. Also as far as the Confederates being sore losers - Robert E. Lee disobeyed Jefferson Davis's orders to maintain a guerilla war, instead encouraging the South to support Lincoln's unification agenda. Lee's reputation as an honorable warrior earned respect from the entire nation and greatly aided healing. History is important because life is important. Everyone here is happy the slaves were freed. But many do not see the chains that still exist. There are still more stories to be heard, and more battles to be fought. We are all brothers in arms. Peace

  • The “X” symbol of the Confederate flag, the flag of Alabama, the flag of Florida, and the flag of Jamaica is a symbol that originated in geoglyphs of Neolithic Kazakhstan. It is one “Mark of Cain” which also includes slavery, colonization, warfare, the symbol of the swastika, and red flags. Slavery and the ancient symbol of the “X” was spread by Maritime Cultures that were ancestral to the Phoenician Canaanites of Western Europe and Northwestern Africa. Trump’s grandparents were born and raised near the ritual center in Herxheim Germany where Linearbandkeramik farmers butchered and ate 500 to 1,000 victims of human sacrifice. Trump is a descendant of the pagans that Noah cursed to become the slaves of slaves. The movie franchise of “Star Wars” is based upon a conflict between two ancient Empires (one a Republic of slave owners, one of Democratic people who believed in liberty and justice for all). The same Empires, and their ancient grudge, are the subject of Romeo and Juliet. The Romans (who were Huns) used the symbol of the Star and Crescent, while the Israelites (descendants of Hebrews) used the symbol of the Star of David. Anakin is Kinana, or Sinanna, Canaanite. Today’s Conservatives (“Servants of Canaan”) are the descendants of Phoenician Canaanites. The Romans created maps of Germania. The Netherlands were home to people called Caninefates, or Cananefates and Chamavii. These Cananefates were probably named for Canaanfa(der)ates, or Cananva(der)ates, literally “fathers of Canaan”, Canaan vaderates. The Can’vaderates sailed to North America during the Roman conquest of Germania and became the Confederates who named Alabama for Elo Ba’ Hamae, named the Bahamas for Ba’ Hamas, named Jamaica for Jameh. The Confederates (Cain Vaderates) were Dutch Canaanites that were the original Pirates of the Caribbean who flew flags displaying an “X” (Confederate flag, flag of Alabama, flag of Florida, flag of Jamaica, Saint Patrick’s Saltire, flag of Scotland, Saint Andrew’s Saltire, the Cross of Burgundy, the flag of Britain, the Russian Navy ensign) that originated in geoglyphs of Neolithic Kazakstan. The Confederates started a war with the United States of America (which killed 620,000 Americans) to conserve their culture of slavery. A man named Abraham freed the slaves. The Confederates assassinated Abraham.
