  • I would've mentioned the laser headlights. They can turn on / off the high beams fully, or partially. You can have the brights on on one side of the car and off on the other, so as to not dazzle other drivers. Or the brights can be on on both sides of the car but off in the middle, so your high beams illuminate the road on either side of the car in front of you in your lane, while not dazzling that cars driver. It's a huge thing, especially for who drives really early in the morning, late in the evening or at night.

    @WTF1200rt@WTF1200rt2 жыл бұрын
    • Fun fact about the matrix/adaptive headlights is that the US is late to approve them so now USDM cars are getting them. Toyota was the one that petitioned the NHTSA back in 2013 to allow them and it was finally approved earlier this year.

    • Taking the Model 3 Performance on the same "7" comfort level as the BMW i4 M50 is totally idiotic! Just a classic Doug DeMuro bullshit opinion. The Tesla is much noisier inside, it's much less interior refined and much more annoying at this point than the BMW i4, which has a total premium built interior. Therefore giving both cars the same "7" for comfort is completely wrong. Every BMW interior is way more refined than all these boring and "puristic" Tesla interiors. The sound design inside the i4, which was made from Hans Zimmer and his team, is also a good point, which is much more attractive for a way more emotional, interesting and satisfying daily driving experience, than the cold and reverberant atmoshpere in a Tesla Model 3. Tesla wannabe "build quality" is still CRAP, whereas BMW produces, just like Porsche, German build quality of the highest level! The Tesla Model 3 isn't by far on the same level of a BMW i4, period!

  • Thanks for the video. In regards to the “driveshaft tunnel”, the i4m50 chassis is shared with the ICE gasoline version M4, which has a transmission and drive shaft running through the tunnel. BMW choose to use the same chassis design instead of developing a new dedicated EV chassis so it has the tunnel. However they did utilize what would have been wasted space by making the floor mounted battery pack utilize the space in the tunnel. It budges up in the center tunnel and also raises up where the back seat is to take advantage of more space.

The word i would use to describe them would be "fiddly" - they just seem to have a lot of extra crap on them - trim, buttons, unnecessary stuff inside, etc. The ridiculous kidneys up front, overall size of the car, and other things are just a turnoff in my eyes. My first Bimmer was an E36 BMW M3 I bought brand new and that was, in my mind, the last real non-complicated BMW. They, in my not so humble opinion, really need to get back to that. If BMW would building something *like* a Tesla but with BMW flair and engineering would be great rather than all this complexity. Also on that theme, since this is an electric car - I would have thought BMW would pay more attention to electric vehicle platform engineering (lightness, simplicity etc) rather than just flinging their standard product packaging at an electric car and seeing what sticks. Still its a give and take - I wish Teslas had real features like these cars, but apparently thats never going to happen. Thanks again - great content.

  • Doug please, Don't rely on BMW's 0-60 numbers in your scoring. BMW is always underratting their numbers. At least, take these numbers from reputable reviews like Car and Driver, which calculated the 0-60 of the i4 in 3.3 seconds. It is faster than Model 3 Performance. Tesla is adding 1 foot rollout, which is .3 seconds already. And you mentioned that Mach E GT has the same acceleration as the i4, which is 1000000% wrong. The Mach E GT died after 5 seconds of acceleration, and no one was able to do 0-60 on it in less than 4 seconds. Moreover, you forgot to mention that BMW still has the $7500 tax credit, while Tesla doesn't. In addition, the driver assist feature in the BMW is $1300 and in the Tesla, it is crazy $12000 extra. It is a big lie full self driving that would never happen, and it accomplished similarly to the one in a BMW. As a result, the i4 has a better value overall.

    • Shame about the range and charging network. Otherwise this would be an obvious winner over the Model 3 Performance.

    • @@DannerBanks The range is another lie from BMW. They claimed i4 range with this rim size is 220 mile, and Edmunds has done an extensive range test, and the results were surprisingly higher at 270 miles. 50 miles more than BMW claims.

    • 18 inches wheels on the eDrive40 gets over 300 miles of range.

    • You want range, you should really consider the E40 over the M50 on the simple grace that the M50 is _not_ constant AWD. Meaning that when you're cruising for the best range in an i4 M50, the front motor is not supplying any power and is nothing more than dead weight.
