Here's a brief overview of our basic approach to dealing with reactive, and/or aggressive dog behavior. Don't try this at home! If you have a reactive, and/or aggressive dog, seek help from a qualified professional. For more information about my services, check out my website: kentuckycanine.com/

  • Stonnie, more folks need to watch your channel. Yeah, you're training dogs, but if folks pay attention they're getting great life lessons. Here we have a man in a serious knee brace, saying "Brace be darned there's work to do, I'm -- literally -- running this course.". You'r a good man sir.... A title fewer men are able to claim, each day.

  • I am SOOOO glad you said that Buddy was not ready for a dog park and probably never would be. I meet a lot of dogs who are deemed fit for dog parks by their rehabbers and these dogs are far to unstable for dog parking. Thank you for being honest and realistic. I think you could manage Buddy in a dog park if you had more time with him, but his owner most definitely isn't up to that task (at the point this video was made, as clearly she had no control over him). Thanks for helping dogs.

  • Stonnie, Just watched you “rant”. That isn’t good for you, some people could be pulling your chain. I’ve “trained” all my animals (75 years and still at it), horses, dogs, birds, etc. and along the way I’ve watched many trainers. You are the first no nonsense trainer and the only one I’ve recommended to others. I have a Cavachon, no shedding and she’s lucky my arthritis still allows me to walk her about half a mile a day. We play games, you’ll love this, she brings the dirty clothes to the laundry room from across the house. Another game is hide and seek, she stays in one room and I go in the next and hide a sock then she comes to find it. It’s so much fun but I had to learn what motivated her. Thank you for pointing out how to be happy and how to make my dog happy. You’re very good at what you do and I appreciate the videos. Laurie

  • I wish I would have seen this when my dog was still alive. He was a golden retriever/chow combo. Very beautiful and looked more retriever than Chow. Buddy looks very similar to him. I couldn’t walk him around other dogs. Unfortunately, he looked cuddly so everyone wanted to pet him, esp kids. If I dared to say he wasn’t friendly to other dogs or children, I would get the nastiest looks. Even in places that weren’t off leash, there would always be an owner who didn’t have a leash and the dog would make a beeline to my dog. I loved him so much, but it was very stressful.

  • Do you ever go the other way around the obstacle course? I did, my dog just got too set in the one way, so to add to the brain work, I took him the opposite way around our obstacles, then I let the kids out to play and added all the other distractions back into the mix.. I don't have a pig, got 'feral' stray cats...With the dogs barking at us from behind a fence, I talk to the dog owner and explain I'm training my dog and want to train their dog too. My dog and I will walk past the fence, or sit down in the middle, I want them to ignore all their dog's noise. When their dog stops fussing, and my dog is calm, I'll chuck a treat over the fence and give my dog cuddles and a treat. I've never met a dog 'over the fence' who doesn't quickly work out that quiet brings good stuff from over the fence and it makes for a happier owner who isn't so stressed by a barking dog.

  • I can understand why Stonie would say this dog probably never will be able to do the dog parking thing...but I took a much more reactive dog than this dog and turned her into a dog safe for any dogpark. It took a muzzle...I was really glad to see Stonie employ and show us how to get the dog used to the muzzle, the steps needed to get the dog used to other dogs and how the dog was safe around other dogs. The catch is...I had to take my dog EVERY day for a few months, and I didn't take that muzzle off until I saw that she was relaxed, not defensive or reactive to other dogs, and wasn't trying to be dominant over other dogs, either. She learned that she had that lower jaw stabilized and we had her in a fairly consistent group of dogs. It took a lot for me to take off the muzzle, but 3 months into the project, she showed that consistent training pays off. The key here was there were NO dogs that had aggressive tendencies or played so rough that they could hurt her. As well, I happened to have another dog who was quite dominant and would distract any dog that came up to my muzzled dog that might have been there to cause trouble. Here is where the owner would have to stay close to their muzzled dog or make the dog stay close enough that they could rely on the handler to help with protection.

  • THANK YOU! This is VERY HELPFUL video and informative information and training for me is an area I need to work on with my reactive rescue - a two year old Lab/Staffy. I have a reactive rescue that I have been training and working with for the past year. She spent her first life in a shelter and came to me with ZERO experiences. I've been working to desensitize her to loud and "scary" things like; our loud Kirby sweeper, getting in and out of the car, fast moving vehicles, trucks/garbage trucks, motorcycles, motel push carts, wheel barrels, leaf blowers/lawn mowers, large boats being hauled by on large trailer by beeping carts, motorized fast moving bikes and everything else we see around our condo that is situated on a BUSY bike path. She is doing quite well considering how scared and reactive she was just a year ago. I don't see my girl being ready to run in the dog park either BUT we have been working with a trainer and her super chill dog in front of the dog park and she has done well by keeping her busy with walking briskly, commands and treats. In the meantime, I have taught her many basic commands like sit, stay, come, wait (at the crosswalk) leave it, "calm girl" shake paw, no, yes, lie down and crawl etc. We are both always learning here!

I've trained her since the beginning and we've reached quite a good level already (I understand the progress is as fast as my own progress/skills as the trainer -- as this is my first dog). There's still work to do though. Sometimes the reaction lights up faster than I'm able to see the cause or to react to it. But as said, we're getting better day by day, I believe so. And your great video shows again how positive and firm training pays off. :)

I like how it really DEMONSTRATES how to develop that relationship with the dog using physical activity strategy. Very matter of fact, and makes sense to keep the dog busy. Also like how it addresses that the dog is not going to be perfect every time and how to address it with calmness or using a muzzle just in case. I have to add that I most enjoyed watching the loving interactions between Stonnie and Buddy! I feel like I better understand what it means to be in control and gain your dog's trust.

  • Awesomeness love the video Looking forward to more training videos. I lost my baby girl on the 13th. My doctor told me to get another puppy as soon as I feel up to it. I'm thinking about a lab. And I am very happy you have so many training videos. I was totally unprepared for the energy of a Border Collie and Australian Kelpie mix. But, my Chicky was one in a million that loved the world of cats and dogs. I am thinking a Labrador is a bit more mellow but, I want to be prepared. I did have a Labrador before but, it has been years ago. So I was delighted to see all your training videos for the breed. I also wanted to tell you another reason I love your videos is because you really show the steps needed to each task of teaching. I find some of the other trainers don't think about people like me living in the country without means to get to a puppy class. And, even if I had the means to get out and about there are no such classes anywhere near me. I am a senior lady and the reason I was doing so well with my puppy is we went everywhere together. My care giver would watch her for me while I shopped or had a Dr visit. So we spent all our time together mostly outside rockhounding or playing and walking. She only had one problem my cranky old lady cat. Miss Kitty being alone with me in my diy little house was very jealous and would scratch the puppy anytime I wasn't watching. But, Chicky never really tried to hurt her. Sorry I do talk a lot sometimes. Anyway I am very happy I found you. Ms Michal 🙃☕👍💖

  • This was really insightful. My husky, Memphis is a rescue. He's food aggressive, dog aggression and a resource guarder. I've just finished beginner training classes with him where he'd still (with a job) lunge at other dogs in the class. Been taking him to the dog park regularly for 6 days (with a muzzle on) and finally, I let him go the 7th day. He managed to play fine for 2 hours, but then bit a dog when she'd gotten to close to me (a resource he was guarding/jealous behaviour.) I'm gonna try to incorporate some of the things I saw in this video and see if it helps. Thanks for sharing.

  • This is fantastic. Is there a similar training that can be performed if there isn't a pack (or even on individual) of well-socialized dogs to work with?

    • This. You politely pointed out the issue. This training is just great... if you have 6 other well socialized dogs and a few other people there to help.... otherwise... welp.

    • build up play drive with dog & start doing it from a far distance at dog parks, there's more to it than that but it's a relatively similar option (change mindset/association)
