The $99 XLR Microphone - Elgato Wave DX
Elgato just launched its first XLR microphone, Wave DX. I've been testing it for the past few weeks and at a price point of under $100, I think it could be an excellent choice for streamers and content creators that want to go the dynamic mic XLR route for audio.

Keen to hear from anyone who is already using an XLR mic in their streaming setup. What mic did you go for? And what interface?
at2020 with motu m2. pretty happy with it
Being a musician/sound engineer first, I’ve never really liked USB mics. I like using external gear in a vocal chain and I just feel like I have more control over the shape/sound of the signal before it enters the computer. Microphone: Universal Audio SD-1 Interface: Universal Audio Apollo Twin X Duo
I went AT2040 with my interface being my goXLR mini
Rodecaster Pro 2 with the rode procaster
Still using the Samson Q2U. Originally was just using the usb connection, but eventually upgraded to pair it with the Wave XLR. Hard to beat the value of the Q2U sitting at $69 on Amazon, and it includes an XLR cable. The Elgato Wave DX is tempting though.
Awesome test of the microphone! Love how these high quality mics are starting to come down in price!
1 minute into the video and already satisfied. I subscribed! Keep up the great work!
Love the channel I always so informative and stray to the point much love I’ll be picking one of those up thanks🤙🏼🤙🏼
Sounds and looks pretty nice! Getting more & more difficult to justify a SM7B these days...
This sounds so tinny compared to a 7b lmao. there's a reason why musicians use an sm7b compared to these cheap sounding streamer mics
@@kiba488 he said it's harder to JUSTIFY, not saying this would replace the sm7b or that the mics are comparable in a studio setting.
The noise cancelling SW on this new Wave DX is fantastic.
THE PUNS. YES. That aside, color me surprised. I had asked elgato on Twitter a while back if they were planning on coming out with a dynamic microphone and they told me no. And yet here we are. Pretty neat, especially at it's price point. Definitely seems like they released it to specifically pair with the wave XLR. More competition at this budget is never a bad thing!
I feel like they told you no to keep any plans they had secretive and stuff so that we would be hyped when they actually did release the mic in question
@@notmrgrim Or...the dude that runs the Twitter account didn't know? lmao.
This has become the only channel I come to for stream related info
Would have been nice to compare with the Elgato Wave. I feel the wave mics lack warmth/bass
I currently use an ATR2100 in XLR mode. I've had this mic for probably 6 or so years. I wonder how the Wave DX would compare to it?
I love your videos bro!!! Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱🤘🏾😁👍🏾
Could you show us how to set it up perfectly with the goxlr mini please?
Great, concise presentation. You quickly mention Wave Link, and I've been trying to determine whether this mic can use Wave Link if you don't have the Wave XLR interface, the way the Wave 3 mic can. It would be a nice feature for the DX (and consistent with expectations set by the Wave 3 mic), but the other videos confuse this issue by using the Wave XLR and the Wave DX mic together.
Answering my own question, by the way: No, the DX microphone does not use the Wave Link software, unless you pay the extra money to buy the Wave XLR interface. That's why Elgato wants to sell both products together, although unfortunately, by giving them both tp reviewers as a set, a lot of the videos might tend to confuse the features of each.
@@danmagoo that's a shame
How about comparing this to the SHURE MV7? I need your thoughts on this... Thank you
I love mine and i had so much fun playing with it. Switching out my SM7B for the Wave DX
youre a living breathing clown for that switch
how is the wave DX compared to SM7B?
You switched it out for a cheaper mic? Interesting. Is it really THAT good?
The Elgato Wave DX sounds like it's dampening some sounds but not others. The GoXLR mic was much clearer to me with good dynamic range. The Rode podcaster mic was inbetween.
New subbed here … any recommendations for a budget audio mixer and mic for yt live-singing streaming. Tnx your channel very informative Tnx… pls ❤
Is this going to be a bad deal if you don’t have the wave XLR ? I have a Scarlett Solo with a AT 2020 but like the way this one would be oriented better for my setup and how I speak.
Wave DX and the Røde sound exactly the same. To me the Go XLR mic sounded a bit sharper with the S’es so it would need a bit of a de esser which isn’t too terrible. It would be great for El Gato to have an XLR condenser mic to compete with the AT2020 and others, because I sound better with a condenser than a dynamic mic in my opinion
Hi ,thanks for video.I searxh for a mic that reduce or eliminates the noise from the room ,is the wave link wave any setting that i can do that
Hi is this good to connect in the audio mixer?thankyou
Me myself got the wave 3 .. how can I make it fewer shrill.. and less echo ( warmer voice ).. with the raw voice input the dx and the wave 3 sounds so identical.. I wish I could know how to tweak my voice so it’s sound exactly like this video..
I actually really like your XLR cable, which one is it? Lol
Can this microphone be installed on the Rode PSA1 ?
I've been doing an incredible amount of research to find another XLR at an affordable price. I agree the DX sounds similar to the Podmic, but I much prefer the aesthetic design of the Podmic. I'll be keeping a close eye on Holiday Deals, but if Rode doesn't end up offering any, I'll be getting it regardless.
whats the brand and model name of that low profile arm?
awesome i like the elgato look
What's it compared to the SM7B?
Did the GC podcast end?
You're so good!
Alpha Gaming said the Wave DX has software with built in EQ.
can I use a xlr to usb cable with this?
Honestly it just sounds ok, I think I'm so used to hearing people stream with the SM7B that everything else sounds cheap.
0:13 lmfao nice one :D
When testing a microphone you should disable soundtracks
no need for shockmount?
Did I see that this is a partnership with Lewitt?
There is no mention of the weakness of this microphone other reviewers pointed out - the poor shock performance. Maybe it is not of importance for a lot of users, but if you have the mic mounted onto the table and you tap too hard... Obviously it strongly depends on the use case...
Podcast when
I think I might pick one of these up to replace my blue yeti. I would probably get an Elgato xlr to go with it. Does anyone know if that's an upgrade compared to my yeti?
I’m doing the same thing. The Yeti has been getting on my nerves so I’ve ordered the DX with Wave Link.
i've el-gat-to-get-one. 👍
pod mic just looks so much better, and its got a little more detail for the same price rip
Please post an update video on whether or not Ted tried the cookies
I think Elgato is best dynamic mic I ever ever seen.
Bought it and sold my Shure SM7B. Can’t wait until I get it.
Nobody's asked but I'll let you all know anyway; my personal experience with the Wave DX was fantastic for the short time I was using it, but after getting a bit more disposable income I decided to upgrade to the Blue Sona. To me it's basically the Shure SM7B with some frequency differences (that can be adjusted in post) and an additional amp built-in to the microphone that negates the need for a Cloudbooster or a Fethead. I would still recommend getting a Wave DX if you need an inexpensive but great quality microphone.
@@or10nsharkfinthanks for that info, im a complete noob, i have the blue yeti because of convenience but it picks up everything, is it worth switching?
@@tunk930 If you have the extra money to toss around, the Wave DX and a Wave XLR device are worth getting in my honest opinion. Especially if you're upgrading from the Blue Yeti.
your mic boom arm name please??
MIC ARM LP
i just purchased rode podmic and i might ask to be refund to exchange for this model ^^
peace bro!
There's something fishy about camera technology that we still have to hold up an object directly in front of the camera and wiggle it around until the camera focuses on it.
Its a high end camera, so its made to auto focus on the face. So if you block the face it auto focuses on the next thing
Wow $100 and it sounds the best
I am hearing low, that's one thing I feel I won't like it , the design is cool
But is it better then the Wave 1 and 3?
They are very much the same for the most part. You might get more quality from the Wave DX because it’s an XLr mic but for the most part, telling the difference will be hard
@@MurrayFrost if that's the case I'm sold! I really love the sound of my wave 3 but since it's condenser it picks up every damn sound in my room so a dynamic xlr is my best bet
Do it fit into the computer or do it need a mixer?
It’s quite obvious, that you need a shock mount for the Wave DX. And while Elgato does provide a shock mount for their Wave 1 and Wave 3 microphones, on the Wave DX, you don’t get to buy one. So while the microphone sounds nice, it’s not my choice. I will stick to my good ol boring Shure SM58 or Shure Beta 58a. For those I can get a shock mount and a wind shield. And they rock such a good sound, that The Wave DX trembles in fear. It’s just… Well… Admittedly, my favorites look boring and let’s face it: People buy their microphones by looks.
How did you not think of, El-got-to-get-one or el-got-to-go.
Cause it’s not funny
Do i need to buy a "Go XLR" extra , to use a xlr microphone? because that is so expensive
It is a good deal, but it lacks presence in the voice. It sounds perfect .. perfectly boring. With some EQ you can give it wings, but that is true with nearly any microphone.
I don’t need no more mics right now 😂😂😂😂😂… stop dropping new mics every 5 days 😂
LOL all of the mics sound essentially the same
Have I el-got-to-get-one? Not anymore. I've el-got to leave.
Looks like your watching too many Tom Buck videos.
no mic can defeat my ugly voice
😂
welp why dont you record your voice and we can be the judge
Lustig das alle deken der ist englisch aber der ist deutscher hahaah
Lmfao, I wonder if you like Elgato at all...
