Same language but their culture is very Anglo-Saxon: more casual, like joking when anxious, eating eggs and bacon for breakfast, and more strangely, like Anglos, feeling kissing IS almost sex, even if they kiss much less than the French do when making love.

We don't do that in Poland and I remember a funny situation when President Macron tried to kiss our prime minister and she instinctively started defending herself and moved away.
That's not true, I know people who do that in Poland, I guess it depends who and where, perhaps it's more official and perhaps it's more older people that do that although it's still common among younger women and between men and women. The prime minister not being young and being a woman it feels strange to me she didn't know how to behave.

Great episode. At a dinner party in London hosted by an English couple my boyfriend at the time attempted the bise with the host. As they dove in for the bise both hesitated which side of the face to schmooch and wound up kissing on the lips. This was especially hilarious because the host was a posh Englishman with a stiff upper lip and heterosexual to boot.

Eduardo, has to do with some people being good at giving kisses vs those that are bad at receiving. or don't know where to start kissing. i usually pretty good at defusing the situation. I went to my little cousin's communion in Italy, in that part of Italy people not only kiss but they grab too. I had to adjust to the surroundings because Italians are quite short and I am on the tall side. I had to lean all the way down to kiss and quite a few times i missed the spot by a milisec.

In Greece we do it too but you have to be friends or relatives to really do it, you are not obligated with strangers at all, it seems weird if you do it too early in a social interaction, aka if you aren't familiar with a person. You have to do it also with co-workers or elders but you have to know them at all times.
En tant que française je trouve que ce qui a été dit dans la vidéo est très juste. Selon les régions de France dans lesquelles nous nous trouvons c'est 2,3 voir 4 bises. On la fait pour dire " bonjour" et " au revoir". Par moment oui on peut avoir une hésitation à la faire à une personne que l'on connait peu et bien sur les accidents de " baisers sur la bouche" arrivent mais ça reste rare. Bonne video bravo à vous Easy French ;)

I am from India and I was in France for a few months a few years ago. I found it odd but nice that you greet everyone in the room and say Bonjour when you arrive at work. As for la bise, me and other Indian colleagues of mine used to avoid it, we used to rather shake hands, even with the women. We didn’t mean to be rude or distant, but it would have been quite awkward for us, as we are not at all used to it. But it is a warm gesture to greet. :)

Holy crap your French is sooo good. I’m really working on mine at the moment so it becomes as good as my English skills one day. Though learning English was a bit easier due to the amount of (interesting) content on YT. I wonder if you have lived in France before or did you acquire your French in the US?
Thanks for the kind words! I grew up in the US and learned French originally in high school and college but I had the good fortune of studying and doing research in Paris for a few years. I also lived and worked in francophone West Africa so lots of immersion! I can still remember all the huge improvements and things I noticed when I was 20 in Paris even though at that point I had already been studying the language diligently for 6 years. Still learning now -- petit à petit l'oiseau fait son nid! :-)

Yeah I’ve noticed it’s always three, and it’s not just bumping cheeks, but real kisses. And, kissing cheeks is a greeting all adults do, regardless of familiarity.

The number of "bises" always gets me. When you first meet someone, and you don't know where they are from, you won't know if they want to go for 2, 3 or 4 bises. Where I am from it is 3, but where I grew up it was 4, and I have friends who come from places where it is 2... What to do, what to do? So my take is that I go for 2 anyway, so that I don't end up being the one presenting my cheek to an empty space... :-)
And do you start with the left cheek or the right cheek ? ^^

Je suis brésilienne et guide francophone basée à Rio. Je me suis toujours sentie un peu gênée de saluer mes clients français, car pour une carioca, il est normal de faire la bise. Maintenant, je sais que c'est normal pour les Français aussi. C'est bon à savoir !

I really liked this video! In Mexico we only do 《la bise》 between women, and men-women when we are close or meeting someone for the first time; just one cheek. Children don't do it between them either 😁 it took me a lot to get used to it since I don't like it 100%.. when there +1 person I just wave my hand 🤣 it may me uncomfortable very often!!! 😟☹

Bonjour, ce qui est étonnant c'est d'entendre que la bise est une tradition française, ce n'est en aucun cas une tradition française, la bise a été importée en France dans les années 60, probablement du bassin méditerranéen. Si vous avez pu discuter avec vos grands parents vous apprendriez qu'ils ne se faisaient pas la bise ou alors seulement dans le cadre familial. Pour être honnête je remercie Covid d'être passé par là, je réserve la bise à ma famille et amis proches. C'est un sujet que j'avais abordé avec pas mal de monde lors de la pandémie et j'ai été surprise de constater que pour beaucoup c'était une "corvée" et ils sont bien contents de ne plus y être contraints. Ce sont surtout les jeunes qui s'y adonent et c'est très bien, continuez jeunesse à célébrer la vie, merci de respecter ceux et celles qui n'ont plus envie de s'y plier et tout le monde sera content. Ne vous inquiétez pas chers amis étrangers, les français aussi sont parfois perdus avec ce rituel. Faîtes comme bon vous semble, faites la bise si vous en avez envie mais que cela ne soit pas une obligation... Je vous souhaite une vie longue et douce. Bonne journée

my family’s hispanic and we’re all used to giving a “side kiss” on the cheek. instead of left to right like i mostly saw in this vid, we’d do on our right cheek to the person’s right cheek.

J'ai plusieurs expériences marrantes par rapport à la bise. Je suis chilien, j'ai vécu en France et j'y ai eu un petit copain norvégien, alors imaginez-vous. Dans mon pays on fait qu'un bisous du côté droit, donc en France le premier mois je laissais beaucoup gens attendant le deuxième bisous que j'oubliais, hahaha, et ils me regardaient sans rien comprendre. Puis quand j'ai rencontré la mère de mon ex en Norvège elle s'est beaucoup approchée à moi cette première fois-là, alors je me suis dit "ben est-ce qu'elle a gentiment recherché comment on se salue dans mon pays ?... Allons-y". J'ai essayé de lui faire une bise, mais non, elle voulait seulement me donner un câlin (ce qui est typique dans la famille en Norvège, mais mon ex ne m'avait pas dit ça !). Par conséquent elle était choquée, car ils se font des bises seulement entre amoureux. Quelle honte ! Hahaha. Notre première rencontre a été très embarrassante, mais après on a eu le temps de bien clarifier notre moment malaisé. Les différences culturelles quoi, toute une aventure fascinante.

Hi Cynthia! I miss it as a custom sometimes in the US too. Great question about the sound - hadn't even thought of that! In my experience, it's with a sound of a kiss from both people even though it's cheek to cheek, but hmm now I'll be in the lookout for noiseless bise! :-)
Hi Cynthia, Yes the sound is important, I'm sometimes very lazy and just give my cheek without any sounds, and my close friends always tell me off :"hey what is that, make an effort". Actually, there's two kind of "bise" : some people really kiss your cheek (I personally don't like that), some just do it cheek to cheek with the sound.

La bise est difficile à comprendre pour les étrangers car il y a beaucoup de codes implicites : à qui faire la bise ? Famille et amis et parfois les collègues, ca dépend des entreprises. Combien ? Ça dépend de quelle région et aussi de la relation : ex : dans ma région c’est 4 sauf pour les collègues où c’est 2 pour ne pas passer trop de temps. A partir de quel côté démarrer ? Ça dépend des région Et comment : on ne fait pas vraiment un bisou mais plus une accolade de joues avec un bruit de bisous. Nous connaissons la plupart de ces codes mais on peut se tromper aussi si par exemple nous rencontrons pour la première fois quelqu’un du sud qui ne fait que deux bises du côté gauche alors que dans notre region on en fait 4 du côté droit…. Mais se tromper est quelque chose que l’on accepte avec cette pratique de la bise, on peut meme demander à son interlocuteur comment lui fait, ça n’est pas choquant.

On s'embrassse entre jeunes, entre adultes, entre femmes et aussi entre hommes de tout âge ! Donc, si vous venez en Argentine et vous voyez deux agents de police ou deux gendarmes qui se font la bise à l'aéroport ou dans la rue, ne le prenez pas mal, ca fait partie de nos habitudes ! went to france for a language immersion programme and i was super shocked and awkward the first time i did la bise with someone but looking back it's actually a really nice affectionate way to greet someone and i really wish people in my country did it too

Pour t’aider, on dit « la dame » quand on parle d’une adulte, là elle est jeune donc on dirait plutôt « la jeune fille ».

Bonjour! superbe vidéo j'ai beaucoup rigolé, moi je n'aime pas faire la bise je préfère dire bonjour de loin, je trouve le contact physique de trop juste pour saluer quelqu'un après c'est dans les habitudes des français et ça ne changera pas (enfin pendant le covid j' étais tranquille avec la bise mais après ça va revenir) en général j'essaie de rester loin avec un sourire commercial et je dis bonjour à tous le monde de façon verbale et voilà, ça m'évite de venir faire les bises à tous, après quand on se précipite vers moi je la fais pour pas que la personne soit mal à l'aise
