Phil Jackson weighs in on classic 1-on-1 scenarios between Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and more.

    • I do personally think MJ was the better player, but this video is about who would win 1v1. Phil isn't saying MJ is the better player, just that he would win in a 1v1 game- basketball is a team sport and beating someone in a 1v1 doesn't mean you're the better player.

    • Matt Garcia All Phil said was MJ because he has bigger hands which is not a debate ending reason imo. Kobe at 19 was cooking big hand MJ and Kobe was no where near his prime. And yeah MJ wasn’t at his absolute prime but MJ won a chip, finals MVP, and was first team all defense that year and was still the best player in the game which says a lot about 19 year old Kobe. Phil also said Kobe was more skilled than MJ in another interview. In a 1 vs 1 the more skilled player would most likely win especially if their measurements are identical.

    • No disrespect to Kobe, who was a phenomenal talent, but I honestly don't think it's that close. The only people who bring up Kobe in this conversation, I feel, are Laker fans. MJ redefined basketball. He made his teammates better. He won 6 championships. Kobe was a great player, but Jordan is transcendent.

For any coach to paint that picture in a player's head to the exact level of detail necessary for Jordan to execute that play at THAT moment is what I miss seeing in today's game. • Very well said. And I know Phil of course gets recognition, but even so, not as much as he should. Phil was absolutely the best coach I've ever seen at working with people. And hey, that includes three of the biggest egos in NBA: MJ, Kobe, Shaq. And I don't mean that in a bad way, the egos, I just mean, he had to harness and tame those guys to work and trust their team mates. And it worked. MJ couldn't and did not win until Phil came and coached him differently. Phil was simply a way better coach than Doug Collins. Doug Collins let MJ have free reign. Not going to happen when Phil came. They had the triangle offense, and moving the ball and using your team. MJ even admitted it, he didn't like Phil at first. Phil asked him to score less, but Phil said, you know you have won many scoring titles, but our goal here is a championship. We gotta move and share the ball here.

One of the greatest shooters ever who can also pass, rebound, defend, and was clutch and tough as nails. He basically had no weakness. Magic was versatile but much of his success was due to the fact that he was being guarded by much smaller PGs and that he played with arguably the greatest center of all-time and another #1 pick in James Worthy. • Kobe was the closest I've seen to MJ's mentality, other than Bird. But MJ was better by every stat or facet of the game you can compare. Across the board, about the best Kobe gets is even with MJ in a couple of categories (FT's, 3p%) and other than that, MJ is better in every other stat. Per game, MJ has more rebounds, more assists, more steals, more blocks, better shooting %, and of course, averaged 5ppg more. He's just better than Kobe. There's just not a legitimate argument that could be made otherwise. THEN you pile on all the Finals MVP's, 10x scoring champ, 3x steals leader, DPOY.....Kobe just isn't at that level. Kobe was great. Really great. I loved him. But MJ was simply on another level.

    @SealofPerfection@SealofPerfection2 жыл бұрын
    • But we are talking about 1v1 rebounding and assists are team stats mostly, it takes a team to box out. Ft percentage is an individual Stat as it is your ability to draw fouls. 3pt percentage is often an individual Stat too. Not saying Kobe is better but 1v1 Kobe defense is just as tough as Jordan's Kobe work ethic is just something else. Jordan is the better in terms of raw skill. I never like this debate because it's just so tough, and if you take out the fanboy and the awards, and just look at skills and stats together. I just don't really see a winner.

      @Robert53area@Robert53area2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Robert53area Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but the stats say what they say. MJ was better pretty much across the board. Even if it's just a little. MJ's work ethic was easily equal to Kobe's, btw. He was known for being relentless. MJ's defense was better. Both were 9x 1st team Defense. But MJ was 3x Steal leader. (Kobe never was) He was DPOY (Kobe never was) He was 6x Finals MVP (Kobe 2x) 10x Scoring Champ. (Kobe 2x) Now think about that for a minute: MJ was 10x scoring champ, while also being 9x 1st Team All Defense. And DPOY. So dude was the best scorer, AND best defender in the league simultaneously. Nobody's done that. MJ carried 6 teams to championships. Shaq carried Kobe his first 3. MJ never had a Shaq, or anyone CLOSE to that level. Kobe is the closest thing to MJ, but MJ is clearly and demonstrably better, even if it's just slightly in a few categories. Nothing wrong with not being *quite* as great as the GOAT. I'd still take Kobe over Lebron. LBJ is a stat collector, but I'm not a fan of the team shopping and All-Star recruiting he's had to do in order to win. Both Kobe and MJ stuck it out with the same team for their titles.

      @SealofPerfection@SealofPerfection2 жыл бұрын
    • I couldn’t agree more. Also, Michael sat out almost 2 full years in his prime to play baseball. If he didn’t do that he almost certainly would have lead the Bulls to 8 championships in a row and he would have won 8 finals MVPs in a row (instead of 3 in a row, then 2 years off, then 3 more in a row). In addition, MJ later retired at 34, sat out three full years, then came back at 38 and still averaged 23 points. If he didn’t miss the 2 years above, plus the 3 “retired” years he would have the most total points all time, by far. As it stands he’s 5th all time despite sitting out 5 years!

      @cyclesmoking@cyclesmoking2 жыл бұрын
    • @Darnell Nah. Not Prime MJ, he's not. Vs Old Jordan of the Wizards, probably, but MJ was 40 by then and sat out 3 years before coming back that last time. Sitting out took something away from him each time. Prime MJ is as quick or quicker, as fast or faster, can jump higher, has all the moves, and has those huge hands. He's not losing to Kobe, although you could sell one hell of a pay per view to see that game played if you had a time machine. Kobe is basically MJ, just slightly...just very slightly, "not quite as good" across the board. But very close. Closest there has been. But you can look at both their stats and see that, MJ just slightly better in nearly every category other than scoring, where he's considerably better.

      @SealofPerfection@SealofPerfection2 жыл бұрын
    • @Darnell prime vs prime? MJ was so much more athletic you kids just don’t know. Kobe a baddie but if you have to make up scenarios where a non-prime MJ plays prime Kobe to win you’re admitting MJ is better

    • So you're saying Kobe didn't will his Lakers teams through the WESTERN CONFERENCE and Finals for 5 rings as the best versatile scorer, most 4q points, most Clutch points and in OT while leading in defensive win shares as the best defender while also leading in both creation and assists and steals?! Like really 👀

  • Jordan was the best to ever do it he changed the league. I grew up in the Jordan era the man is a living legend,he is in his 50's and has been out of the league for a while now but his shoes and clothing line still sell as if he were still playing. You only get that kind of respect from the masses if you are a legend. All the basketball comparisons are ridiculous in his prime the man was the NBA period all these younger guys will never understand. Its obvious I'm a fan, but I'm also a realist i watched his entire NBA career and i consider myself lucky to have seen such basketball greatness. G.O.A.T. hands down period!!!!!!

    • Same here. I watched every season the bulls played from 92 to 98. Some of the best of the best players of the game played in the 90’s. What makes MJ so good and so legendary is the sheer fact that he played and won against the best players in the league. We’re talking guys like Reggie Miller, Hakeem Olajuwon, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Alonzo Mourning, Robert Parish, Shawn Kemp, Tim Hardaway, Bill Laimbeer, Kevin Johnson, Dan Marjorie, Patrick Ewing, John Starks, Muggsy Bogues, Dominique Wilkins, Spud Webb, Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler, David Robinson, Isaiah Thomas, JR Reid, Larry Johnson, Gary Payton, Dikembe Mutumbo, Sam Cassell and many other true legends of the game. If you can go up against all these players, beat them every season & win championships, then you earn the title of GOAT. If you can’t, then you’re still just an NBA player, nothing more. This is what makes MJ the legend he is, he went against the best the world has ever seen and beat them.

  • Jordan seems more natural as he made everything seem so facile...whereas he trained like crazy, it was the persistence, patience and discipline that made a guy like Kobe even cast in his league. So they are both great in their own ways. Jorden is undoubtedly more talented, but Kobe had that sheer drive to be like him...and, in his own way, he succeeded and more. R.I.P. Kobe
