Mobility in Medieval Plate Armor. This video shows that full plate allows one to stand up from a fall with relative ease. Perhaps the most infamous example is the notion that "knights had to be hoisted into their saddles with a crane," which is as absurd as it is persistent even among many historians. Misconceptions and Questions Relating to Armor. Armor was worn only by knights.Wrong. Women of earlier times never fought in battle or wore armor.-Wrong. Armor was so expensive that only princes and rich nobility could afford it.-Wrong. Armor is extremely heavy and renders its wearer immobile.-Wrong. It's a bit like Roman armour which was also good..
I feel like part of the misconception about armor being cumbersome comes from fantasy depictions making armor look like it's three quarters of an inch thick, they'd be carrying around 300 pounds of metal on their bodies. Anytime I've seen real plate armor I'm always shocked how thin it is.
I think its cause its meant to be dense rather than flexible. So yeah it fends of blades easily, even tho its rather thin.
It probably came from jousting armor, which was super heavy and unwieldy as it was made mostly for protection and not for actual combat functionality. It was like 2 to 3 times the weight of battlefield armor.
@@publiusventidiusbassus1232 For me it's probably more to do with the fact that people just tend to expect "heavy" armor to be actually incredibly heavy in general due to the reality of modern warfare while errouneously projecting it to medieval warfare.
I think the whole "heavy and immobile" armor stigma was from the time when guns were getting common on the battlefield. They tried to make armor more and more resistant to gunfire and it eventually became too heavy.
Actually no, at the time they just made plate armor for the torso and the hips while trying to make it more resistant but in the end they couldn't outpace the development of gun
Or creator of this clip putted modifications from modern time allowing that armour to be so mobile face it moder replicas are mockery they didnt had stainless steel and swords i saw in museum that are authentic were not from white stainless nasa steel
@@mrbloodylordbaronsamedi.9937 do you really think that the blacksmiths at the time were dumb to not be able to make armor that allowed you to be mobile yet resistant?
the idea of armoured knights being slow and cumbersome is due to the fact that at the time they were described that way because they were slow and cumbersome... compared to unarmoured soldiers. It's only relatively recently, with experimental archeology and whatnot, that we realized this. Imagine if you tried to describe a tank while only having a car to compare it to.
i personally believe it was primarily due to jousting, since jousting armour is extremely heavy and cumbersome because it might have to take a lance at full speed more peasants would have seen knights jousting than in battle, so they'd see slow clumsy knights if the contest went to foot
The chances of you being killed by running knight are low... but never zero. 2022 Edit: Why the fuck did this blow up so much? I was half asleap when I wrote this.
Well... you’d be able to hear them before they even got close enough. No ambush, stealth, or element of surprise. When you’re in a forest and you hear “ * clank clank clank * “, start running. Best chance is hiding and making an escape while the tin man gives away his location, but you might have a stamina advantage. Even if they are mobile, having an additional 30-ish pounds to your every movement has to be taxing. But I will admit that the thought of hearing steadily approaching clanking is really fucking funny.

There is even more. I have some time ago started walking with a weighted backpack. This is called rucking and is essentially what army soldiers do during training to improve their overall fitness and aerobic capacity. Over months of regular daily walks I would monitor my heart rate and slowly increase my pace and load to keep my heart rate around my target. My fitness improved to the point where walking with a backpack was less taxing than walking without it before I started my training. When the weight reached 45 pounds it became painful to walk due to uneven pressure on some parts of my body. I changed the backpack to a weighted vest of the same weight. But now thanks to this vest being *around* my trunk rather than on my back, it became very easy for me to walk around. I can confidently say that people who wore these contraptions would not have any problem moving around due to weight alone, as long as they also spend enough time each day training in them. Your body can adjust to the load, you learn to move in new ways that take the added load into account and all your muscles, tendons and joints strengthen to withstand it as well as your cardiovascular, aerobic and endurance.
would that not damage your spine or something though
@@doggosuki Nope, unless you something stupid, it will strengthen it over time. Are soldiers or backpackers coming down with spine issues? Not really…
@@doggosukinot really. Your spine is designed to be load bearing. High impact jumping could damage your knees, but you'd be retarded to think jumping down even a 3ft elevation would be ok. As long as you are avoiding the high impact on your knees, you are good. You will actually increase bone density as well as muscle strength. Pressure on those tissues triggers them to strengthen. You should google "weight training bines vs normal bones" and typically you can find some pictures. They are thicker and more dense. Its like looking at a piece of wood vs a piece of rock.

I am not surprised as a retired soldier. 50 pounds of deadweight on your body vs. 80-120 pounds of deadweight on your shoulders is an amazing difference. I am very impressed with their ability to perform in full plate. It was, after all, the M1 Abrams technology of its time. Unexpected results. 😮
Nonsense, M1 Abrams is a tank that simply cannot be destroyed, its armour is impervious to anything while this medieval armour can be defeated easily.
@@SMGJohn_Secondary Finally beaten Black Ops 1 on Veteran, have you?

@@SMGJohn_Secondary M1 Abrams definitelly can be destroyed by like 1000 of other weapons.
It’s still pretty damn cool that even a small portion of the world back then used full on armor like this. Shows you how good human ingenuity was back then, and it’s crazy that we have technology more advanced than this.
An important thing to remember is that armor and weapoms always were developed to suit the regions of the wearers. It is documented that heavy metal armored conquistadors eventually started wearing the central american armors because their giant tin cans basically cooked them alive and was hard to navigate dense jungle and swamp in. While the native armor wasn't as "advanced" it fit the region it was made for by being light and letting air flow.
@@kid14346 That imagery of Conquistadors wearing native armor always gives me 60s Vietnam vibes. Also, another thing I wanna support with is they used horses and were a very small population in every battle they were in, using other tribes for much of their manpower. Full armor would only be useful if they were seiging or defending behind walls, which much of the native depiction of Spaniards in full armor were during those 2 types of warfare - and more notably, during diplomacy.
@@kid14346 the native armor was pretty much the same as early medieval gambesons. While lighter armor came to be preferred (depending on which land they were conquering), they never abandoned steel plate. They just reserved it for more special occassions, like cavalry charges.
@@publiusventidiusbassus1232 I never said they fully abandoned, just that many foot soldiers adapted by taking armor from slain enemies or creating their own lighter armor inspired by the native's armor.

@@DTux5249 I didn’t say fight 100 zombie at once i meant when they are defending a building and one zombie sneaks behind them then the armor will come handy
@@IRON_KING_KNIGHT True, but generally being able to move is better. Especially in "walking dead" type universes. Of course this vid proves that to not be the case, but stereotypes And honestly, given how deaf these characters are, i think armour is the least of their priorities. Like, in no mainstream universe have I seen quiet zombies and they somehow sneak up on people. Regardless, characters have to be able to move quickly at a moment's notice, and because "armour makes you slow" (at least by their universes logic) it's better to keep light to avoid the horde
@@DTux5249 You have a point but one thing you forgot to mention is that armor is noisy so sneaking around can be difficult but what I’m talking about is when someone staying in the base defending... and some survivors or “base members” are coming back with a horde chasing them. So if you put it this way: Ten armored men with automatic fire mode on or single fire for ammo saving.. encounter a horde coming from obviously one side. And the defenders attack!! The defenders will eventually reload and lose sight of some the undead in the horde... so if they lost sight of the horde then they might get attacked from behind.... depending on the structure and how the zombies can get in so maybe zombies will crawl from holes or tunnels and get behind the defender and since the defender can’t hear anything and maybe one of their own men dies without noticing anything!! So I would say armor is for a “scenario” that has a 17% chance of occurring once each raid... then armor is there for that scenario. But scouting is best without armor ( like you said you need best mobility possible)

In the 15th and 16th century (gothic and renaisance) the plate armor was the most active, but sadly, either you have to be rich enough to afford it ( horse, armor, weapons, clothes under the armor, saddle etc) and that price is equal to modern tank (with different currency, but still a tank) your other option to get it is to loot. The best armory was in german territories (holy roman empire) and italian states. But id recomend for your fattas the italian, since german required for you to be unaturaly slim. They did this by having a certain thing on them. They were still mobile (i believe terrifingly even more so) but german knights had to make themself slim by wearing a piece of clothing that would be later used by women from 18th century to 1930's.

Agree with most of your points in your description other than implying that plate armour was affordable... it certainly wasn't. Good full plate was still 6-12 months wages on a typical soldier's wages and it would be several years wages for lower paid peasants so its still pretty expensive. You'd have to be wealthy and at least of the upper classes to afford. Also I think some of these videos on the mobility are a bit misleading. Watch some of the videos from the modern fully armoured fighting series in eastern Europe and see how quickly the wearers get puffed out and can barely move through exhaustion. Yes you might be able to sprint but not for very long.
The overall affordability of armor varied from period to period in the Middle Ages, though. While in general it was still quite expensive, plates (not necessarily full plates, but still) were starting to become more affordable and more sophisticated as time went on. Sure, still expensive, but take into account that in the Early Middle Ages pretty much *nobody* had any armor to speak of and knights only had chain mail. Fast forward to the later stages of the Middle Ages centuries after and decent brigandines were starting to pop up more and more frequently amongst common soldiers while the knights just simply got even more sophisticated armor. I guess the mobility falacy comes from later armors designed to protect from early guns. That was thick and heavy to the point it was only worn on horseback. But it could stop bullets of the time.
Imagine you're medieval peasant and this thing charges at you
It's almost as if when people started creating armor they wanted to make sure they could actually fight in it 🤔
I'd definitely min max my way to victory if I were to go back to the medieval times. Why bother with mobility when you can have an impenetrable coffin of steel to guard your life? Sure, I couldn't hurt anybody, but nobody can hurt me, either!
@@davidreeding9176 wouldn't blunt weapons would be devastating to armor.
@@waltersobchak4565 not if it's think enough
@@davidreeding9176 the problem would be your joints, too much armor and you'd be giving up your ability to defend effectively from someone stabbing your armpits. Unless you armor your armpits (armorpits?) in which case you can't move your arms and have to kickbox people like the Black Knight
@@davidreeding9176 The enemy would promptly capture you with ease and set your steel box armor on top of a fire pit, leaving you to cook inside of your steel sarcophagus Brazen Bull style.
People don't use their logic today. They think that wearing 50lbs of plate armor is like wearing a 50lbs backpack. It's completely different when that weight is dispersed throught your body.
And even then soldiers today carry a 100lbs pack plus other equipment.
@@epicwisp7450 Except these days, most of that weight is on your back and chest, which is unequal distribution.
Well, they never worn one before - so they're just using some instinct and imagination. For things like this, even when thinking with logic, you might visualize something incorrectly because you have never experienced it (never perceived and familiarized those particular, specific physical sensations before. Like seeing a cake, knowing its gonna be sweet and stuff, and eating it and realizing it's not exactly what you thought it'd taste like - maybe there's unexpected texture and all. Still sweet though.) Things get clearer with hindsight and experience. But you're right, thinking critically with regard to detail like that does help in tempering your visualization/imagination. Think Critically (the Concentrated kind - Not the confrontational/conflict kind)
"People don't use their logic today" Well, that's a very illogical statement of itself. Besides, this idea that armor is overly cumbersome isn't a myth I've heard much about, if it all. No TV show or movie have really perpetuated this "myth" as far as I can tell. Nor have I read a book describing armor this way. These guys just made a clickbait title by telling you everyone thought this, but really, most haven't thought about it whatsoever.
BIG TIME I can confirm that the unequal distribution in modern armor/equipment is quite cumbersome if you’re marching for long distances or trying to get up.
Yeah the thing that makes the fights look more clunky isn't so much the weight or mobility loss, but rather the huge sight decrease from the helmet. Thats what gets yah.
That's why they had visors.....
@@StonesSticksBones Visors still block your vision a lot up until they get large enough to compromise your safety.

Before fireguns, this was pretty ultimate. Medieval armor was like 1-man tank. When You add a larger powerfull sword like the longsword and a fully trained soldier, historys like the the Battle in which the Inca king was captured (200 spanish vs 4000+ incas) become very reasonable

@@ocek2744 the thing is, soldiers/ knights left the castle fully armored and armed, in long treks and runs, a fully armored knight will always be more tired than just foot soldiers in chainmail/ leather, not only when leaving castle, but in the middle of battle too
People probably mistake jousting armour as the real wartime armour. Those competition armour are heavy and thicker. Knights train hard and prepared for their day in the battlefield and are part of the nobility in addition to being the “special forces” of the army, surely they would demand and have authority to demand armourers to make armours that will showcase their hardwork and skills.

then they sprint towards you with swords in hand, ready to kill you.
If they dont have their armor, i wonder how fast a medieval knight can run.
A knight in full heavy plated armor with a halberd is definitely slower than a unarmored knight with just a longsword Thing is the difference isn't something massive and even if the armor weight makes your stamina drain as if you have a heart disease the fact you don't have to dodge 90% of all incoming blows means you'll still get tired slower than an unarmored dude who must dodge everything or die/lose a limb
But I'm pretty sure that it is very stamina draining
oh, no, they were definitely slower, but not slow enough to don't make you run for your ass
