When I saw the black characters I thought they weren’t gonna accept Ginny and that would be the narrative, but Ginny literally blew them all off when they were being so welcoming then complained she wasn’t accepted with black kids
Right that was so confusing
She complains about not being accepted or understood because she doesn’t typically connect with black culture and leans the other way, I think she felt intimidated. I think she’s the type of person that would’ve gone with them had they pushed as hard as max did and been the only people that did so

Hunter was def cringe, but I never hated him. He’s a genuinely nice guy who never pressured or purposefully stressed out Ginny. Everyone’s hating on him for the racist remarks he made towards her, but everyone conveniently forgets that Ginny literally instigated that whole argument? Saying that Hunter wasn’t Asian enough/ even she was more Asian than him and that his struggles weren’t comparable to hers... overall, this show is just veryyy irresponsible...
His comments were a rebuttal--they weren't his actual thoughts he was just giving Ginny the same energy she gave him with the whole "I speak more mandarin than you" "you're basically white" bs.
Tbh I think I dislike the audience more than the show, they hate on Hunter for such stupid reasons and love Marcus despite him being lowkey problematic

You're literally the first person to talk about this. Thank you I was so damn pissed I mean-
The fact that she was basically gossiping about it with her friends weirded me out so much. Throughout the season, she was constantly uncovering her mother's secrets and acting on the knowledge without actually taking to time to learn WHY her mother was keeping those secrets. Her mother never mails Austin's letters to his FELON father, has a jacket from a biker gang and owns multiple guns, and all Ginny does is complain that these secrets affect her, gossiping about it with friends without really bothering to look for what the secrets are or why they're secret in the first place.
Fr she is always asking her mom not show up so she doesn’t get the attention ‘drawn to her’ but then proceeds to tell them about how her mom has a gun and pulled out on her. She says how much she hates her mom and how she would rather ‘die’ then become her mom when she’s becoming worse than her mom when she lies for no absolute reason.While her mom lies for Ginnys Safety and her mental health
Honestly that shit pissed me off so much like also why would you be gossiping about shit like that?? Idk about anyone else but if some random ass bitch started talking about her mom owning a gun I would avoid them like the plague like ofc Norah was gonna tell her mom

She literally chose the most TOXIC friend group and then wondered why they stayed having problems lmao. Everybody’s issue in this show was putting up a facade and not facing how they felt until it bottled up and came out as either a fight or a murder 💀 clearly there’s no good therapists in that town not even Abby’s parents 😭
And Georgia is one of the most toxic parents ever. Her behavior was so self absorbed and often bordering on abusive it was hard to watch

I actually think that was a nice touch because she joins the 'black' table as if it's that easy to find a place to belong, but it would have been reductive to the black characters, reducing them to their skin color as if that's their entire identity. Showing they have interests different from her own, including different plans for their futures, really shows how small and limiting Ginny's desperation to fit in in high school is. She doesn't actually have a clue of what her interests are or what she wants to do in the future, but she resents her mom for not pushing her to take extracurriculors because that just what all her friends have been doing. It's about fitting in, not about having her own life.

Joe, Ellen, and the guy who was dating the detective were 3 of all-time favorite characters. The teenagers were poorly created. All the boys in the friend group would irritate the braincells out of me whenever they were on screen. The most realistic teen was Abby (personal opinion).

Ginny literally told her “I’ve had my own family problems too” like that is not what you say to someone when they’re upset-

And liking literature, being smart and insecure, craving stability and wanting to fit it. Also she speaks Korean and is able to ride motorcycles because of her dad. She loves her dad and adores her little brother. Her relationship with her mother is problematic due to her mother being very self absorbed and toxic in many cases. She had a lot of character actually.

To be honest i liked that the characters looked so young. Most of the times those "teenagers" look super ripped and like they are in their 20s but they didn't. I don't mind that the actors are older (i find 21-24 good enough to not be weird in intimate scenes yk...) as long as they look like the age of their character. And they all pass

I thought he was really sweet to Ginny. Other than his cringiness and 0 personality he was fine. Marcus also had no personality and was kind of creepy. Both dudes were just off.

I agree. Why can't that just be his flaw? Every teenage character on this show is annoying. But Hunter being Hunter is not nearly as bad as Ginny being annoying, Max being self absorbed and dramatic, Abby being mean and Norah being fake. And Marcus being a twilight wannabe. Hunter and Bracia were the best two.
The black people in the show are just there to aid other characters, they were portrayed as plus 1’s

Being a teen myself, I absolutely hated how they showed all the teenagers. They basically made it look like all teens only want sex, alcohol, drugs and drama. They were all unlikable. The teen characters were either selfish, cringey, toxic, trying too hard to be deep but ending up as just being ridiculously mean. I actually thought Ginny was alright at first but with every episode I hated her more and more. She just seemed really selfish and it felt like she kept playing the victim card at everyone. Like she could just for once listen to someone and try to understand them instead of being like “oooh but my life is worse than yours you have no idea what I’VE been through”. I felt like whenever she was crying the show wanted to make think “oh poor her everyone’s so mean to her and they just don’t understand her” but I was actually thinking “wow okay so I guess it’s you who is getting treated bad?”. To me she was just really toxic.

i feel like ginny kinda gets an unfair amount of criticism for some things. like, people complain about how she shouldn’t have been so rude and ungrateful to georgia cause of everything georgia has done for her, but it’s not like ginny knows this. from ginny’s POV, her mom has a ton of secrets, and she always does something that makes them have to move, which keeps ginny from having a normal teenage life.
Also Georgia is really toxic, constantly disrespects her children and tramples all over them. But nobody mentions that.

I saw how Ginny doesnt really like black ppl (besides from her dad) and when she was with Bracia and her friends, she was like so awkward and like "what are these ppl talking about ummmmmm" and she just wanted her white friends
Yeah I didn't like that scene where she only decided to reach out to a black group of friends (who were being very friendly) because her white friends dumped her. I think the black group of friends are all seniors so they are talking about like senior stuff so of course she wasn't able to talk to them and connect with them but they still tried their best to make her feel welcomed. And the thing is she didn't EVEN TRY. Is the thing that she said about being too white for the black community and too black for the white community which is valid but like girl you are ALWAYS going to be too black for the white community because you're experiences literally differ from them. And she had to learn that the hard way when they jacked up her hair and threw her under the bus with the shoplifting. And even after all that she still ignored Bracia and stayed with her horrible friends. 🤦🏽♀️

Unpopular Opinion: Maxine was annoying and probably my least favorite character on the show. I seriously don’t understand why people love her so much she‘s incredibly selfish, overbearing, entitled, and only cares about herself. Ginny’s annoying too but at least you can actually cut her some slack. Max is honestly a terrible friend and I hope Ginny befriends those black kids she sat with at lunch in the last episode. Don’t even get me started on the way she treated Abby...
But ginny is the main character so it they had to find ways to makes us understand her more. Max wasnt so we dont have a reason to justify her shit behaviour but they were definitely as bad as each other
