One of the most underrated superstars of Canada.
totally agree
I agree. Al this talk about Corey Hart, or your Brian Adams is a great Canadian musician . NOT so ! . I never listen to them-- I went straight to my record player to play my Larry GOWAN albums. Love, love, LOVE forever to Larry Gowan .Btw, I can't believe it's been so long. I am shocked to learn he is a gray haired old man..i went to a concert where he sang standing on top of one of the speakers as tall as a ten storey apartment building ! He created such excitement / energy within me. Coming from him. So to see him now, so old-- is a shock..but I continue to love this guy . Rock on, Larry !!! 😎😘💕❤️
Yup❤
Right up to the point he tried to replace Dennis DeYoung in Styx. At that point, both he and Styx became shadows of what they once were.
Hey, buddy. Its aboot time for Mug Club, eh? I can agree that Lawrence is better than Bryan Adams, guy. But let us not forget he cant hang with Rush.
One of the greatest singers to ever come out of Canada
..or anywhere else for that matter.
@@canuckereh9202 Fully agreed my fellow countryman!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
artist.
A CRIMINAL MIND IS ALL I HAD
Second place to gordon downie
When this came out, I thought it was the best new song I had heard. What, 25 years later? And it still brings me a thrill! And makes me a little more proud to be Canadian.
36 years ? Time flies

Same here.
I just saw Gowan in concert tonight and it is truly an experience!! It’s crazy that his voice still sounds like this
Well he is a strange animal. Thats what I know.
Was he all luminartied up? He didnt wear the G in his ear, did he?

4 years ago I got the opportunity to meet Mr. GOWAN on a flight to Vegas. We spent the whole time talking and being a Scarborough boy just like him. And how the parents were crazy about watching their kids play play rep hockey. He stayed with my cousin and I all the way to when we picked up our luggage. But I got the chance to tell him about how I felt about this great song of his. He was very gracious to me but I told him that this song of his was up there with the Best of the Best. Very down to earth man. ♥️
The haunting piano melody and the dark lyrics in this song are incredible! The video's comic book style and Gowan's charisma are unique. A true 80's classic! Thanks so much for this upload! Well worth the wait!❤
Have this on my psp mp3 great song
Absolutely perfectly commented on.
I saw Gowan perform at Massey Hall on Nov 30, 2023 in Toronto. His voice still awesome, and he is still acrobatic. :)
Videos back then have something that is not there today….IMAGINATION…❤️❤️❤️🤟🤟🤟
I'm a huge Styx fan and when Gowan joined the band I had no idea who he was. I wish Gowan could have broke through in America but I'm glad I have discovered his music. Great music
I have loved Styx since I was 16; Gowan from a few years after when this came out - when he joined Styx I was beyond pleased x
No
You mean I have seen this guy in concert before?! I didn't even know it until just now! WOW! He was and is cool!
September 24, 1985 - Gowan performed live at Memorial Stadium in St. John's Newfoundland. Not the first concert I saw (I was 14 years old), but the first time I saw an artist absolutely bring the house down. The Newfoundland audience was completely into it. Gowan came out for THREE encores, and the only reason he didn't come out for a fourth was because he joked that he ran out of songs. Gowan seemed truly appreciative, and somewhat gobsmacked by the huge noise made by just 4000 enthusiastic concert goers. What an underrated talent. Gowan fan for life.
This song is such a gem. Love it.
A high quality “Criminal Mind” video?!? Be still my beating heart!!
I have never lost my extreme appreciation of Gowan.
I love how this is done to a comic book. It sounds so ominous and chilling. Mr. Gowan is so brilliant and talented!
Yes.
OK THIS IS EPIC
A gem hidden in the past
This is a true masterpiece.
I live in NY now but grew up in Toronto and totally forgot about Gowan. Glad I found him again.
totally forgot?? Oh come on girl!
This song of Gowan's has recently gotten into my head. It's maybe his most underrated song. I mean Strange Animal and Moonlight Desires are his most notable tunes, but A Criminal Mind is a dark , almost melancholic the tune, very craftily done.😎👍
I think it's about time we started a petition to make this a real comic book!
this song still gives me chills for "i am".. such a gangsta song
This is one of my absolute favourite songs by any Canadian artist of any time. I know we've had the Guess Who, Rush, Neil Young, many many others, but this song, man...so haunting, so beautiful.
Now, now, now, because of Bryan Adams non-Canadians might be leery of listening to solo Canadian artists.
Tragically Hip was one you missed
This video scared me as a kid. As I got older I came to appreciate Lawrence Gowan and his contributions to Canadian music.
I saw Gowan , Play this back in 1985 , in Sarnia Ontario .at Campbell Street Station...
♥️one of Canada’s best
Larry Gowan, #1 artist from my home country!!
80's was so futuristic, what happened? in the 90's when i grew up we had that 70's show... i want to go back, back to the future!
Soo underrated
Ya if this was same song but phil collins name in title it would have 10s of millions of views
FINALLY a High-res version of this video and.... I *almost* can't contain myself lol - the Official Comic cover fits in so well with the intro of the video!! (and thanks again, Gowan for having me aboard for the comic project!! It was a blast!! :D)
No way! It was you who did the comic art! It's completely epic! Well done! Also love Jem too!
I AM SO PROUD OF YOU ILLIA!!!! Every time I watch this I think "THIS CAME OUT OF HER BRAIN, OMG!!!" SO much talent!! 💙
U got a website....I need work done
@@heavnsnt1969 thank you! The only thing I can truly take a bit of credit for is the comic book itself(I did the inks for it) - the video its based on (which we see above)had an awesome crew of people to make it happen, so I could be inspired to work with Gowan all these years later lol
Heard this on the radio at work and made my way back to this video to re-experience this Canadian classic 🇨🇦
How come there isn't millions of plays for this masterpiece? Still as good in 2020!
30 yrs ago....I loved this song.....❤❤❤
Canada's answer to Peter Gabriel! Inventive, bold, and unique!
And funnily enough Tony Levin is on bass and Jerry Marotta is on the drums! One incredible bass player and an incredible drummer!
This and Moonlight Desires I thought were some of the best songs to come out of Canada in the mid eighties and stand the test of time
Also love Cosmetics, Strange animal etc...he has a song called the dragon, it was used in the movie Navy Seals. His first album is good too, just called Gowan the music video is called keep up the fight.love them all.
I was born in 85! And i love this! Such an awesome song and great video!
Awesome song, amazing voice
Bro sauced on the whole decade.
One of the greatest music videos ever made. Aunt Jemima baby.
Thank God aunt jemima wasn't racist when this comment was posted
Just heard this song for the first time ever and I love it!
I’m so Honoured to have seen Gowan live in Concert.
What a powerful song... The video is kind of funny, but the lyrics are way more profound and significant if things are taken to the second level... Absolutely genius...
Always second level ....
...............:(
I loved this song and couldn't wait for CHOM FM to play it. I have lived in both Canada and USA. This song is one of my all time favorites.
I saw the show some days ago in my native town of Joliette,Québec , from about 20 feet from the stage , it was like travelling back in time, the sound was perfect , the performance was perfect too from everyone, making the music really sound like the original versions , and to conclude,Gowan is a musical genius ,nothing less.
What a great song! And, hello from Montréal!
Easily one of the best songs ever written!!!
one of my favorite artists
It's been a few decades... Still a great record. Nice to see the good people are still appreciative
I'm proud to have been a teen in the 80s in Canada!
Greatest music video ever made.
I'm met (saw) him at a celebrity hockey game, at the Saddledome in Calgary, AB, Canada!
I don't know how many times I watched it back in the days...
Such a fabulous voice
Proud to be a Canadian we have alot of great music like this song.Any many more great artists.
never see that coming
I was born in '81. Brother is 7 years older than me, so I grew up in a house with muchmusic constantly on tv. This video used to scare me a little for some reason.
1980 kid. That last scene in the music video always scared the sh$t out of me.
For some reason the video didn't scare me
Late 70s baby. Scared the shit outta me too.
Same here, but it was the “glue” scene. My childhood memory had inflated that but to the point where I thought it was most of the video!😄
I remember seeing the Styx concert wherein he performed this dressed up like the Heath Ledger Joker and realizing "Oh.....that's who's made of cold stone: Mister J!"
Woke up this morning with this song in mind. I Never watched the official video before and find it very brilliant. No CGI effects, just pure imagination well realized. Amazing !!!! Thanks Gowan.
another 80's dramatic gem!
Thiz guy is the best 💫🎶🎶
MASTERPIECE ❤️
I was the official music man at the prison I was at year's ago. With a deeper voice I'd sing this all the time. The guy's and the COs thought it was awesome. Great song.
Lyrics for those who'd like them: I stand accused before you I have no tears to cry And you will never break me Until the day I die A criminal mind was all I All I've ever known They've tried to reform me But I'm made of cold stone My criminal mind is all I All I've ever had Ask one who's known me If I'm really so bad... I am I've spent my life behind these steel bars I've paid my debt in time But being brought to justice That was my only crime I don't regret a single action I'd do the same again These prison walls secure me And I'm numb to pain A criminal mind is all I All I've ever known They've tried to reform me But I'm made of cold stone My criminal mind is all I All I've ever had Ask one who's known me If I'm really so bad... I am Before you hand me over Before you read my sentence I'd like to say a few words Here in my own defense Some people struggle daily They struggle with their conscience 'til the end I have no guilt to haunt me I feel no wrong intent A criminal mind is all I All I've ever known Don't try to reform me Cause I'm made of cold stone My criminal mind is all I All I've ever had Ask one who's known me If I'm really so bad... I am Oh I am Oh I am I'm made of cold stone Made of cold stone I'm just like these prison walls A criminal mind
This song doesn't get nearly enough love....
Seriously, if this was one of phil collins hits it would be considered one of best songs ever
Amazing video
Profoundly, deliciously haunting. After the Halifax concert in '85 I snuck a kiss on this maestro's cheek. The Spoons opened. Followed the concert with a trip to the Misty Moon. Watched the great Carole Pope do her thing. What a night.
one of my fvaourite songs growing up. brings back some memories
Holy Christ this is the first time I've seen this video and this kicks ass
don't say the Lord's name like that. trying to enjoy a song here!
CHILLS...WICKED SONG
I love the fact that Maestro Fresh Wes sampled this, made a video and went all Law and Order with it!! ❤️ Gowan actually looks really believable and creepy in the prison jumpsuit!
Why is this bad ass jam not in a movie soundtrack 😡!!!
Larry Gowan all great songs 🎵 n videos i love them
hi. new fan here. wow this guy was ahead of his time. wicked voice and the music video is cool.
One of the best song probably the best honestly I never heard it's just OMG... I really love that song.
Such savage times... Thank god we no longer use the punching, face plunging, and plaster covering machine to punish thieves.
Greetings from God Mother ✝️🙏💜🔥🔥🔥🌒
I know, can you believe this was around the same time people were heading out into the forest to hunt humanoid looking “Strange animals,”completely bonkers, thank god we have stricter hunting laws now.
Gowan was my grade 8 teachers brother he was always showing us his records
Absolutely one best singer . Amazing
Looking forward to Saturday night 🙏😘
I met him in Montreal at a music shop early 80s after he released this album. Later I finally saw him live in LA when he toured with Styx. He played one song of his - “Criminal Mind” at the show and it was great. Many people though, at the show were looking at each other asking what song is this?
It didn't originate with Styx. It originated with this not-Dennis-DeYoung Canadian Genius-Upstart person-guy. Dennis DeYoung is really good. Lawrence Gowan is really good, too. I'm not going to try to compare them; it would be like trying to compare peaches to pineapples.
He told us what was going on before it got soooo bad....but now we understand ❤❤❤❤
So happy to hear from fellow Gowanites hahahah I just made that up....he was brilliant when I saw him with sytx and any other time...I used to babysit his godson
This is the trippiest video ever!! Watching in 2020
Morbid curiosity & The movie “Killing Gunther” brought me here. Can’t believe I watched the whole thing -GD Netflix!
Same
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Me too.
That was my father you met at the CNE, he was a prison guard at the old jail in Thunder Bay. He saw the last man hanged in Canada.
How does this video only have 100 thousand views? Insane!
This was a great tune. Should have been more popular.
I loved 🎉this when I was very young. Still do❤
The memories that this brings back
Gowan just rocked Dartmouth Nova Scotia!
I got to see him perform this live in Thunder Bay at Blues Fest a few years ago. It was a wonderful performance!
Saw them last night... What a show!
The song is deeper than you think
great voice
This is wild af. This needs to be like put into a play. Esp bc of how dramatic and expository it is,
Listen to this song everyday 😊
Love this song ,
Glad to finally see an official video! Gowangirl had what seemed to be the only one online for some time!
This song made me who I am today.
.
Great video, I can honestly say they've spent some hard earned cash putting this video together. Unless its been edited from the original version, this video does well comparing to newer videos put out today
I spent 5 years when I was a kid looking for a good version of this on KZhead. Thanks ! Went to school with his niece!
Very clever! Love it.
I totally love both the song and the video clip ! ❤🔥
I had never heard this song until today on the radio. I was instantly captivated and had to look it up immediately after. Amazing song! The video is great too. It sounds so sad but seeing the video as he embraces his criminal nature is actually sort of uplifting in a weird way.
I just saw him perform in Guelph with my brother. It was awesome. I felt like I was 17 again.
