What other 3D franchises eventually got some 2D games that you thought were fun?
Does gamesack count? Also did you do medal of honour infiltrator? I can't remember
The first wave of 3d games 32/64bit had horrible graphics, the hardware wasn't ready to compete with the amazing artworks of the 2d graphics,
There are a couple 2D Serious Sam games -- not FPSes, but spinoff titles. There's also a 2D action platformer for Bloodrayne. You covered a lot of GBA stuff in this episode, but SEGA had some neat conversions on it too, like the GBA version of Space Channel 5. And if you wanted to go Nintendo, then Banjo Kazooie got Grunty's Revenge on the GBA, which is also pretty darn fun. Oh, and the GBC version of Perfect Dark!
Tekken started 3d but went 2d on gameboy advance : )
battle arena toshinden went 2d on the original gameboy : )
I remember when Game Sack went 2D, I liked the silicone graphics but Joe's Jiggle physics were to be missed. :(
The procedurally generated Dave comments were spot on though
@@drwang4884I think you can credit that to the AI
I was singularly impressed with the visual fidelity and detail in his facial hair! Truly state of the art stuff!
One of the most consistently easy to watch and charming KZhead channels
Demakes or reimaginings of properties adopted into weaker hardware is probably one of my favourite things to read/watch. Great episode Joe.
I think demakes are cool.. I wish they'd do it more often like FF XV
I look forward to every new game sack episode
22:45 wait wait wait even the Skeletons Bleed? That is the MOST Metal thing I’ve ever heard
'Even the Skeletons Bleed' could be a good song title.
I think the stark soundscape and small intervals of a tune here and there is what added to the mystique and atmosphere of raiding an actual tomb. That feeling of isolation was what made the game more interesting for me.
I used to have the same opinion as Joe until the modern TR games came out. It made me realize how much I misinterpreted the classic TRs because at least they weren't generic cover shooters like modern TR. You actually felt like an explorer in classic TR, even the platforming was puzzle-like.
The first level of the first Tomb Raider is very underrated. I don't think anyone has done a great job conveying what made it special.
A soundscape can be stark without being completely absent, though. The total lack of any sort of ambience just makes the game feel unfinished and lifeless. A game that strives to create an atmosphere should always have some kind of sound playing, even if it's just wind, or water, or some non-diagetic ambience. That way, you even get to use true silence as a means to create tension.
The sack that keeps on giving
They Tony Hawk games got amazing 2D ports on the GBA. Vicarious Visions really knew the hardware.
It had 3D skaters in 2D environments.
In the beginning of y2k I found myself a bit lost as a gamer since many of the genres I enjoyed weren't popular anymore and the indie market or online stores had not yet exploded like today. During that era I played a lot of J2ME games on my Mobile Phone. A *lot* of popular franchises got simple games for the mobile that could be finished in a few hours, usually in classic genres such as adventure games, platformers, tactical rpg's or zelda-style games. Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed etc. I often found myself enjoying them more than the big screen titles.
Did you play the J2ME Driver ports?
@@FIXTREME I had not until you mention them but there seems to be 3 that are all in the Kahvibreak j2me collection; "Driver: Vegas" by Glu Mobile (2005) seems to be a sequel to Driv3r and in the era I was referring to. Driver L.A: Undercover (2007) and Driver: San Francisco (2011) by Gameloft seems to be later eras.
@@JemyM I had L.A Undercover on my old UT Starcom SuperSlice, back in the Virgin Mobile days. Those games convinced me that Rockstar should have attempted a J2ME GTA game, maybe as a promotional tie in for the Stories games.
I lamented the death of beat em ups during that era & they stayed dead up until Streets of Rage 4. That's a long time. There were many times to try & revive it but they all flopped for some reason. God Hand & Urban Reign were beat em up masterpieces but for some reason the ps2 era hated the beat em up.
@@HereticHydra: I was a major fan of those and missed them hard. I finished several with a lot of quarters in the Arcades. Then I spent much of the early y2k playing through every one of them systematically on emulators. I think Castle Crashers and Sacred Citadel were the first of the new generation of Beat Em Ups but Streets of Rage 4 really nailed it. So happy that genre is back. Spent a good chunk of yesterday playing Mayhem Brawler with a friend.
I never knew that Croc came to gameboy color, honestly looks cool!
It's clunky as all get out tho
wow, love the animated intro. Had no idea it changed. Looks amazing
Been like that for the last several episodes! Definitely check them out
I miss Dave
i thought the stop-motion stuff was just classy
Dark Void Zero was an excellent demake/prequel for that cool Dark Void game.
The Mummy Demastered
I think Game Sack episodes are my favorite episodes of Game Sack
I agree!
Same
Hmmm I'm not sure.
Can't believe the devs of the Gameboy Color versions of Tomb Raider added "jiggle physics".
Yes, this version of the character is quite boobalicious.
you sound new
It was her most forward-thinking feature.
Yeah, back in the day you didn't have to pretend like girls played video games and could just market to the audience that actually buys the product.
@@endymallorn Or in this case, forward-pointing.
The Dave this channel featured Is trapped inside ... a Sega 32x/ sega cd game.
I think when it comes to 2d games in 3D series there’s Sengoku basara X, Xenosaga 1 and 2 for the ds(though more of a demake), resident evil gaiden, and recently slave zero x
Game Sack and Happy Console Gamer are the best video game youtubers. I have discovered so many games from them!
If you are into Sega, Sega Lord X is also a very nice youtuber as well. Also if you want short videos, SNES Drunk is worth a check (usually his videos are "Is game x worth playing today?").
It was interesting to see how many people said this about that recent Prince of Persia.
Amazing how many people don't know Prince of Persia's history.
"(Panzer Dragoon) has never had a bad game in the series" Panzer Dragoon R-Zone would like to have a word with you Joe.
Why would it defend itself as bad?
@@bigduke5902lol tell that fraud
The Game Gear Panzer Dragoon game is pretty bad too.
I liked this episode in that I didn't know there were such good 2D versions of 3D games on potable handhelds. Now I have to go play them!
Dammit, I was about to go to sleep. Well, guess that will have to wait a half an hour
You always find interesting and original themes for your videos dude. I've been enjoying them since forever. Keep it up!
My first interaction with Virtua Fighter was with the R-Zone version xD
I'm not sure why but the older I get, the less I get into 3D games. Medal of Honor Infiltrator on the GBA is another one that comes to mind that fits in here. Really fun game IMO.
Dude what if beating that croc puzzle minigame turned the whole game into an open-world skyrim RPG. Nobody would have ever found out.
Maybe in a future episode you can include Spyro the Dragon, KAO the Kangaroo, Banjo-Kazooie, Jet Set Radio, Klonoa and Alone in the Dark, perhaps Donald Duck Going Quackers too, there's also Tekken, Crazy Taxi, Super Monkey Ball, and Space Channel 5 for the Gameboy Advance but idk if those count. Edit: Also if you don't mind dabbling in Java games there's a 2D Ratchet and Clank, though this may open a can of worms with Java games like Sonic Unleashed.
And Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
And Max Payne on the GBA
Yeah i was surprised banjo kazooie wasn’t talked about here. That was the first one i thought of seeing the title of this episode
Conker got a gbc title too, though technically is was released earlier than its 3d counterpart
I always bounced off of the original Tomb Raider until last year, when I finally forced myself to come to grips with the control. Understanding (finally) that it's effectively a continuation of the gameplay in Prince of Persia/Flashback/Blackthorne made it much more palatable. It demands a lot of precision from the player, but ended up being a lot more fun than I was expecting.
That virtua fighter sprite size option is quite unique I think
That new intro is still damn impressive.
Awesome as always Joe! I remember going to Boardwalk USA, the coolest arcade in the Denver area back in the day. When Virtua Fighter came out, I couldn't stop winning. There was a line at that machine, and when I got my chance, I just kept winning. Not sure why, but I got sick of it and finally let someone else take my turn after awhile. Im so glad I was able to grow up during the arcade days.
I swear this is the best retro gaming channel deserves a ton more subs and views
That was a great topic indeed. I didn't know how many 3D to 2D games there would be or are yet to be talked about. Thanks.
oh my god the series transitions are so perfect and the LCD filter you use for the handheld titles is great, hope you use a great CRT filter in the future for consistency as those certainly exist ;)
thanks joe please never stop!!!
One future series would be the seven (yes, SEVEN!) Tony Hawk games on GBA. There were also two SSX games on GBA, although both of them used polygonal graphics. Ooh! There's also the Java R&C phone game, Going Mobile! Also, holy cow, I was seriously impressed with the animation with the GBC Tomb Raiders! I think the cinematic platforming approach was to mimic the pacing of the 3D version's gameplay, which is an inspired choice IMO.
Hawk was on gbc, too
Haha, that ending sketch really hit home for me since my studio is developing a Neo-Geo game that not only uses 4 buttons, you will use all 4 constantly. Even SNK typically stuck to 2-3 buttons with the 4th button, if it was even used, being something pretty trivial.
3D to 2D is definitely a fascinating thing to happen to a franchise
0:01 the new Hotel Dusk looks awesome
Joe didn't mention the greatest 3D to 2D game ever, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. 😆
Yeeesss!! I always look forward to new episodes! Keep up the amazing work!
Some of the early Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games got mostly-2D versions on the Game Boy Advance. "Mostly" because the skaters themselves are 3D, and the stages are isometric but made of 2D tiles. The first THPS that I ever played was one of these, and they translated it so well to 2D that when I finally played the real 3D game months later, I already had a working knowledge of the controls and stage layouts.
Dave is one consistent sob
Thank you Joe for making all of these amazing videos throughout the years! You always make me happy when I watch them ☺
I really enjoyed when the game sack intro went from 3-D to 2-D.
My son loves the jokes at the end, so you’ve got the 9-year-old boy segment on lock.
I love your A-Ha style intro and I appreciate you using the appropriate filter for GBA games etc. Bravo.
However, you must tell me how you do that transition that makes game footage look like it's being taken apart layer-by-layer.
Really fun seeing the transition from 3D to 2D. I never played those Crash Bandicoot games on the GBA, but now I wanna go find them!
Caddicarus may be off the grid for the most part, but he still comes on here from time to time - he oughta help you realize that this mask here is called Aku Aku.
Great stuff, Joe. Thanks ever so much for keeping this channel going, as it is much appreciated.
I'm surprised that this had enough content for a full video, just goes to show how much I've been paying attention. Love your videos, btw.
"Serious Sam Double D" (get it, get it?) was a 2d side scroller to the awesome 3d franchise.
Such a fantastic idea for an episode, and a narrow time period where consoles were 3D but handhelds were 2D. Good times. I really u hope u find more examples (like Resident Evil/Gaiden) I'd love a part 2! Sláinte from Ireland 🍻
You know when your player knocked out of bounds (ring out) in Real bout Fatal Fury, you see different reactions especially from the first stage.
I was tinkingthe other day about this when playing the banjo 2d gba game
Just want to drop a quick comment to say, the hard work that goes into these videos is very much appreciated, and sometimes leads me to discover games I've never seen or played before. 💖💖💖
Since handheld games were cheaper than console games, these 2D versions were how I knew these franchises. Crash, Tak, Spyro …. I only had the GBA versions.
Music not playing constantly in my opinion is one of the great aspects of the Tomb Raider and something I think more games should do.
Daikatana on GBC is a top down 2D Zelda-like
Daikatana, one of the strangest games ever. I kinda liked it once I got through the first hour. Not played the Zelda-clone version lol that sounds even more trippy.
Oh! This episode now explains the change new(ish) intro!
My personality went from 3D to 2D.
Joedifer is TOTALLY RAD ! 🤙 Edit: 😊
Crash of the Titans is literally the Sonic Blast of the Crash games
Amazing captures, great comparisons!
There was a time-trial/high score version of Nights into Dreams for the GBA! Neat little conversion of a 3D game to 2D!
Great Episode Joe! 😊 Virtua Fighter Animation on GG was base on the animated series of Virtua Fighter!
Congradurations. You Win!
Love seeing a new Game Sack episode pop up in my feed!
I’ll never get the hate for Croc.
Great episode, would love more in this series since I've tended to overlook handheld entries of franchises.
Thanks for the sack as always Joe
This episode could also be called "demakes games"
Virtua Fighter on the Game Gear looks to be a source port of the arcade original. I can't believe they made it work despite everything. Truly a future-proof portable game machine.
thank you game sack for all of the videos
Did he just say bandicute?
It’s great to have a new Sack to start my 3rd shift week! Cheers Joe, thanks for the entertainment!
I like the original intro music better. Great as always!
I wonder why they dropped the zoom feature for the Master System port of VFA? It's not like it lacked a large sprite mode because it was used for the status bar in the SMS version of Earthworm Jim, (which also only released in Brazil), and as a cheat for Sonic Spinball which makes everything look weird because the positioning of the sprites don't change to compensate for the larger scaling. (Was there any other SMS or GG game that used the zoomed sprites mode?) Oh, and another thing about Virtua Fighter Animation, it's actually based off an anime based off the games! How closely the story mode follows it, I don't know...
it's funny I was just imagining the guy buying airplanes making a speech about how he also flies the missions.
That Virtua Fighter 2 for Genesis is actually very impressive on its own. The Shadow/Highlight color mode is so well implemented, and the colors, in general, look good-no dithering mess like in other later Genesis games. The 3D floor is also pretty unique. I always forget that game exists; maybe it fell into obscurity against the real VF2. Nobody really wanted a 2D VF2 at the time. I think SEGA should have released another SVP chip game instead of this.
A rule of thumb that I’ve noticed is that if the home console version of a game is good, the portable version tends to be worse, while if the home console version of a game is bad, then the portable version will be better. Case in point: Daikatana on PC & N64 vs Daikatana on GBC
I really love your channel, every video is like a treasure!
Another Sunday with Game Sack
Gotta respect Core for adding those jiggle physic to the GBC Tomb Raiders. :D
Best retro games channel. fight me.
Your gba footage looks fantastic.
The new intro is dope btw
I would recommend checking out some the GBA Klonoa games based off the the two console games. I have Klonoa Empire of Dreams and remember it being a pretty decent 2D platformer.
It makes sense for skeltons to bleed since there is blood trapped in the bone marrow.
What about Crash Mind over Mutant on the DS? That one is also 2D, also you could've taken this opportunity to play a little bit of Spyro to include it in this episode.
Spyro, aww I loved that game. I can still play it now.
This was cool to watch. Thanks !
Hey, it's that guy. Sack guy. Game.
Awesome, it's sack time! Another 3D to portable showcase: Klonoa
Holy hot pants Joe, I loved playing the older Tomb Raider games and honestly I was never even aware these version you showed existed! I might have to grab those GBA games next time I see them haha!
Joe encountering a skeleton that walks: "This skeleton bleeds!"
Congrats on 300k Sacks!
I think that Virtua Fighter game on the Genesis looks amazing.
Of course everyone loves Croc! Haven't you seen those magazine ads where Croc devours the likenesses of Mario, Crash and Lara Croft? Only a good game can assert such dominance!
I love how that type of ad became almost a clichéd way of introducing a new platforming mascot at the time. Croc, Ty, and Vexx all tried it, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were others.
You had me at 'Congraturations!'
Almost made a comment on your IG to say 'less gram more tube!' thanks for the new vid!
The tube has not decreased in any way.
