Porsche Taycan RWD review: 0-60mph, 1/4 mile & drift test!

This is the new entry-level Porsche Taycan!
Now, we say entry-level, but let’s be clear - it’s not exactly cheap! It starts at just over £70,000, which is about £13,000 less than the four-wheel drive 4S edition. So when the price isn’t exactly that much less than the 4S, we’re just wondering if it’s worth it?
Well for starters this RWD Taycan comes with two choices of battery packs. The normal comes with 408hp and 345Nm. However, if you choose the longer range edition, you'll be treated to 476hp & 357Nm! So, it's not too bad, but let's face it - it's considerably less than the more powerful editions!
However, there's one thing the more powerful editions can't compete with, unlike this RWD Taycan - the starting price for an entry-level Model S, which Porsche clearly has in its sights!
But ultimately, while the price is so similar to the AWD 4S (and that’s even before you add a load of options!), are you just better off spending that bit more? You’ll have to stick with Mat to find out!

    • @@papaarslan40 i know, but thats why a base seat leon costs 20k dls and a base taycan costs 60k dls. the same option, for example on the leon the auto dimming mirrors comes in a package that costs 300dls, on the taycan the same shit cost 3k dls. Porsche asks 60k dls for the base car. and other 50dls for optional extras. I can assure you that those extras come standar in a lot of new cars (like the security stuff: lane keep, adaptative cruise control, etc). That extras that porsche asks 50k dls, im sure that costs them less than 2k dls to fit them on a car. It is a well known fact that porsche is the griddiest car manufacturer respecting optionals in their car.

    • Agreed but you're paying handsomely for that dashboard, considering this loses to a $37k model 3 in performance, practicality, and range. Porsche styling is way better but Tesla makes too much sense

    • ...but the Tesla’s work! The sat nav on cannonball run thought the car was in another state and couldn’t be fixed. It didn’t charge well either. I was amazed how dreadful it was for the brand and the money. £50000 more than a PM3 with full self drive! Come on it’s slower and doesn’t go as far. You are just scared of new tech and upset that the Tesla s are way better. Join us, you will one day!

    • I agree, even though I would rather have it in green. But I love that such a conservative manufacturer is daring to offer some more colourful and creative options. That's one of the things that made the great cars from the 50s til the 80s so great. They used to offer tons of vivid colours because the technology was simple, and that was the way to set them apart and make them attractive. I hope that trend comes back when technology makes cars equal again

    • The Taycan has some insanely good colors, I can't stress how much I love this one in particular. It's subtle and easy on the eyes, but still very unique. And yet somehow everyone is getting the same boring stormtrooper spec, or maybe all blacked out, if they're extra creative.

But it's undeniable that it handles way better than it appears capable of based on it's length and width. That's why I say it looks like a ship. Again, beautiful car but she's a porker. Edit: my idea of a typical sports car is less than 1300 kg. If you park the Taycan next to a 488, you'll see what I mean. It doesn't look like it can keep up with the Ferrari but somehow it can.

  • The 19" add loads of range. Unsure which wheel/tyres Bjorn used on his test but he got an additional 100 miles of range on them. Get big wheels lose big range.

    • Yes they are wider along with larger which increases drag with road surface, also if they aren't aero wheel covers larger wheels have increased drag due to wheel structure facing outwards.

  • The colour looks quite different in different light. I quite like the combination with the 'cheap' black accents. In the tumbnail it definitely looked pink. In the overcast shots it looks Lilac or Lavender. Definitely not purple. Though to be fair, they are both shades of purple with lots of light grey mixed in.

    • But the base Taycan costs roughly the same as a Tesla Model S, and by all accounts, is a much better car. The interior of the Porsche is definitely better, with everything integrated in the Taycan as opposed to that oversized iPad stuck to the dash of the Tesla.

    • It was in bad conditions then you don't get this model taycan if you don't wana go fast. you buy it for the luxury and for it being electric if you wana go faster you buy the higher end models. its like buying the yaris you want it to be a good daily with decent features then get the base model but if you want the faster car with more options buy the gr.

  • This is Porsche's FIRST take on a fun, playful, sports-car EV. Much like the 911, it's all uphill for buyers with refinements. We now know Porsche is making a full-size EV above the Cayenne. The entire industry is going to benefit with what Porsche and Audi are releasing to the market. I also think the 4S is the sweet spot, can option it out well to about $130K USD.

  • 3 years later and these cares are now worth just 35-40% of their original value, with higher end models suffering the most. It's been an absolute bloodbath. You can pick up a Taycan, from a Porsche dealer, for around £45k when it was valued at closer to £100k when new. They won't even stock the base model.

For the price of one specced out Taycan you can buy a good Porsche Boxster for fun and Tesla model 3 to save the planet and probably still have change.

  • Vents behind front wheels are blocked if you option the electric charging ports. Without the option all vents are Real😊. The white brakes are upgraded Ceramic Coated PSCB. The base black ones you speak of or steel brakes. Glad to hear your comment about the 4S Mat, that’s the model I got.

  • Having driven the Taycan I can say that the vent is in fact NOT fake. Once you have driven it appropriately and pot your hand there you can feel warm air being channeled out from the wheelhouse through this vent.

    • The interesting thing about the vents is that they function on the Taycans without the power charging door and they’re nonfunctional on on the ones that are equipped with that feature.

    • People are very surprised when they hear how short the charging times are for EV's. Its not like it's new tech either, its been around for a good amount of time now. I will say % is a bit of a misleading way to present this though, since the smaller the battery the larger the percent you'll be able to charge in a given time. For example, an EV with 320 miles of range gains 55% of charge after 15 minutes, and another 218 mile EV hits 80% in 22 minutes. The 320 mile range EV is actually charging faster in this scenario, with 177 miles in 15, compared to 174 in 22.

Not trying to take away from Porsche, just saying EV's have been this good for a while now And there are phones that exist that can charge to 100% in 20 minutes actually. The problem there is not delivering power to the battery, but rather battery wear, which is more apparent on small batteries.
