James Harrison’s beef with Roger Goodell saw massive fines, fiery quotes and zero winners

2023 ж. 12 Қаз.

James Harrison and Roger Goodell represent the perfect example of a workplace dynamic going to shit. Employee severely breaks the rules by repeatedly engaging in illegal hits. Bossman lays down the punishment of hefty fines. Leaving the employee to respond with an extremely pointed threat that he would rather let the commissioner burn than take the opportunity to piss on him to put out the flames. And that's just one of the many menacing remarks. In other words, it's a sure-fire recipe for beef.

  • One of the best nfl memes of the 2010s: any brutal hit by anybody could be responded to with “James Harrison was fined $25,000 for this play.” Evergreen.

If you presented them with the choice between none of the unpopular safety rules but the revenue levels will decline to the levels of the past where the top paid player in the league made a couple million a year or accept the rules and have the pay level they do now that they’d take the rules and revenues.

    • And the decisions he makes aimed to maximize the revenue of the league directly benefit the players considering the money and benefits available to plays all stems from the overall pot of revenue the league brings in. The more money the league makes directly leads to players earning more money as well as their split of the pie goes up as well. And the same players who get upset that Gooddell only focuses on how to maximize the money are more than happy to receive the higher salaries that the money fuels. And I feel confident that if you actually presented to the players the choice between getting the rules to be exactly what they want them to be but the league revenue shrinking to the levels of the past and the salaries doing the same or accepting that some of the rules put in place won’t be what they want but they get to benefit from the substantially larger revenue pot that has players making way more than the past that they choose to earn the higher money.

  • James Harrison was an absolute stud, this beef really overshadowed just how incredible he was for a good run of years. He wasn't just a really good pass rusher, he was an all-time run defender. He didn't set the edge, he blasted it into the backfield right into the running back if you were stupid enough to run it to his side. It was always awe-inspiring to see him just bully offensive linemen who had 75+ pounds and a foot of height on him. He just had so much power and the ability to gain leverage by getting low. That said those hits against Cribbs and Massaquoi were grisly stuff, definitely not the kind of hits that should be allowed, and were rightly made illegal. That hit on McCoy shouldn't have led to a suspension, though, that was all Goodell pettiness. That wasn't a hit to the head, no matter how huge a shot it was.
