Why Apple Is Allowing Emulators

2024 ж. 25 Сәу.

Apple recently changed their App Stores rules to begin allowing iPhone emulators. Which are essentially apps that imitate game consoles. These have always been available on Android, but until now, could only be added to jailbroken iOS devices. So why is Apple finally allowing emulators in 2024? Well, the first reason is competition.

But Apple doesn't allow JIT apps on the AppStore and since the newest iPhone would have 20 fps gameplay without JIT, these emulators aren't in the AppStore but only available through non-Apple Sideloading. That way you can get JIT although it's a much less ideal process.

    • Hey there, it’s you again! Sincere apologies for talking your ass off in another comments section-hope I wasn’t too much of an annoyance. I would hesitate to see Apple as a “champion” in here as well; they too recently got involved in their own lawsuit against an emulator and lost, on top of all the competition business. And companies actually do not like engaging in tedious litigation against other big companies, so I think it’s likely Apple would side with Nintendo if Nintendo gave them good cause to take down Delta. But Nintendo’s bound to know of Delta now, it’s been out for a couple weeks and in news headlines + at the top of the Apple charts. I think what’s actually giving Nintendo pause in acting against Delta is 1) potentially trusting Apple’s vetting process enough to not feel the need to intervene, since Apple has taken down emulators for not meeting their guidelines even after lifting the overall emulator ban (and remember, the Dolphin incident happened after Steam reached out to Nintendo for confirmation first), and 2) less potentially (though it’d be surprising) Nintendo actually seeing the widespread reach of this product for once and fearing about the potential PR impact. I know it’s not likely since they’re so brazen though and just took down every Nintendo-related GMod creation after 20 whole years, which is why it’s probably more of 1)-surely Nintendo has had enough time to take down the game by now. In any case, it’s a good thing to get into Nintendo’s heads. I want them to do better, be better, and be more worthy of the massive pool of fan loyalty they have. The way I see it at present is-Nintendo are IP landlords, and they’re as irrational about monetising, controlling and restricting use of their property as real abusive landlords can be. Why let houses stand empty as prices continue soaring and people are out on the streets, for instance? It’s the same deal with Nintendo.

  • Emulation through Delta (one of the bigger names in the iOS console emulation space) has been available for non-jailbroken devices for years through Riley Testut’s Altstore and AltServer app signing and installation system that released in 2019. AltStore could also be used to add other emulators or even other alternate app repositories to a non-jailbroken iOS device. Sideloading’s been there for years. Only just now Apple’s forced to admit it actually did support sideloading of some form.

    • Perhaps, but they would’ve taken action against Delta earlier if they really wanted to since they’re bound to know it by now; it’s at the top of the charts and their lawyers keep up with the news. And Apple would be willing to cooperate with them too if Nintendo gave them good cause to take down Delta with a DMCA claim, companies do not actually like getting in tedious litigation with other companies for fun. Realistically, I think one reason for this might be that they trust the stringency of Apple’s vetting process since they aren’t just letting EVERY emulator on there + have actively taken down other emulators even after lifting the overall ban for violating regulations. Plus, Nintendo has no shame at all, but maybe, just maybe, seeing the game maintain its place at the top so long has finally given them pause for the sake of the potential PR backlash they might receive. I can only hope so.

I usually like to fidget with my phone in my pocket, and sometimes I search up something random, so it was no surprise when I found out I had accidentally taken some videos in my pocket. The first weird thing with this video is that in one place it says it’s 6:48 minutes long, but in another it’s close to 40. I started listening. About a minute or 2 into this video, I was listening to a song from the concert, and then the audio cut out. Not abruptly though, it had the “bew” sound if you know what I mean. Like a slowed down laser sound effect. And I thought there was no audio after that, but then when I maxed out the audio on my phone, it sounded very creepy. It was like a heartbeat, and there was maybe remnants of the song in there? I don’t know. Just tell me what happened.

  • They did it to prove a point to the EU. They constantly said for years side loading was banned because of harmful apps people would add and those harmful apps are why they needed they're walled garden. Big companies hate consumer emulation and equate it to piracy and I guarentee Apple will use these emulators as leverage against the EU in future and current law disputes. Especially when you have Apple kids putting ROM site names in reviews.

  • There is actually legal precedent for emulators. Thanks to the first commercial emulator called *Bleem!* Which was a PS1 emulator that came out in 1999. Sony sued Bleem! (Sony Computer Entertainment America v. Bleem) over violations of copyright... and lost. According to a summary by Wikipedia over the emulation part of the lawsuit: "Sony had accused Bleem! of engaging in unfair competition by allowing PlayStation BIOSs to be used on a personal computer as this would ultimately damage Sony's sales of the PlayStation. The Judge had rejected the notion, and issued a protective order to "protect David from Goliath"." A great video that goes over this is LGR's video titled *LGR Oddware - Bleem! Commercial PlayStation Emulator* Here is a link of those interested, Clint does an amazing job summing up this forgotten and unknown piece of videogame lore: kzhead.info/sun/gKqSaa-uaJVqYIk/bejne.html

I do feel bad for people who really care about smartphone freedom, and having to complain for a trillion dollar company to do literally anything about it, because ideally, all phones should have the same standards of downloading whatever software you want, and work with any other phone.

  • Apple could single handily uproot Nintendo’s whole business philosophy, and I think it’s a good thing; I don’t want to give a third party seller for example Pokémon Platinum that goes for around $400 (+/- $70) for a complete set manuals and all or half that for just the cartridge and case then halved again for cartridge only. Like Nintendo could still sell their consoles lots of people will still buy however for Nintendo’s out of production/discontinued games those should be available to purchase legit versions that work on any emulator or flash card. But Nintendo is too far up their own ass to see that the consumer wants something so simple yet it would embarrass the whole company that their ip’s are “reduced” respect/decency or someshit like that.
