iPhone 7 - What Apple Doesn't Want You To Know

2016 ж. 17 Қаз.
6 001 156 Рет қаралды

Every iPhone 7 is not created equal. Yes, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are available in various storage capacities but what about the speed? This video aims to test the storage speed of the iPhone 7 32GB and compare it to the other iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models (128GB and 256GB) in an effort to uncover the truth.
Will these results alter your selection of iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus? Will you now be more inclined to opt for a larger capacity iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus? Leave a comment down below!
*For clarity, this speed discrepancy appears in all 32GB models (iPhone 7 32GB and iPhone 7 Plus 32GB). Faster storage is found in the 128GB and 256GB iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

  • What if Apple paid unbox therapy to say that 32 gb iphones are slower than the bigger gb phones and do fake tests so everyone can get the 128gb or 256gb🤔

  • I love Unbox Therapy videos, but this one is misinformed. The iPhone 7 and 7 plus use SSD storage. Higher capacity SSDs have more chips. The more chips, the more parallelism. The more parallelism, the faster the SSD can transfer data thus leading to faster write speeds on the higher capacities. This comment is not meant to insult either Lew or the people in this thread that disagreed, I just want to clear this up. Is it possible that Apple could have used a lower quality chip for the lower storage devices? Absolutely. Is it likely? No. And even if that was the case, it would affect write speeds, not read speeds therefore, the general performance of the phone would not be degraded. If you want more information other than just my word here's a link with overwhelming statistics and charts: www.tomshardware.com/forum/265761-32-drive-capacity-performance Disregard the first response as they are corrected further down

    • well said, that is what I was thinking

      @grasslandlord@grasslandlord7 жыл бұрын
    • While true, it's not always the case that a higher capacity SSD will result in faster speeds. A 32GB card might have a single ship or it might have 4 8gb chips thus resulting in theoretically higher speeds for the second one. Similarly, a 256GB card might have 4 64GB chips inside or 32 8gb chips... Similarly you may have a poor quality controller/multiplexer (whatever it's called that tells the device exactly where on the SSD to place bits of info) on one creating a bottleneck and a high quality one on the other that doesn't. Lot's of things can contribute to high/low speeds.

      @aaronlandry3947@aaronlandry39477 жыл бұрын
    • good point, just like the smaller SSDs like 128GB or lower has been slower in write speed department compare to higher capacity model.

    • This is my theory: When Apple advertises their cheapest capacity model, they want everyone to see how much does it cost to get yourself into the iphone experience. And Apple knew that the people who bought the 32gb iphones were probably poor or uneducated. They used this to their advantage and made the lower capacity iphones with shittier componets just because people wouldn’t notice! And it sucks that they let us think that we are getting the most powerful phone when we just get fucked over...

  • It is well known that higher capacities solid state storage tend to be faster than lower ones, and this doesn't apply to iPhones only, but virtually any phone model and even SSDs. This is due to the higher capacity having more NAND dies for parallel performance. For example, assume 2 phones use the same NAND dies (32Gb as 1 unit), the 256Gb will have theoretically 8x the write performance (256/32=8) for having 8 units in total. (This is just a oversimplified scenario, in reality there are space constraints in phones, thus increasing costs to use higher density and higher performance NAND, hence the ridiculous pricing while stepping up in storage)

They said that people cried when Steve Jobs died they all think apple like rules the tech world. They said if they see somebody with a samsung they are shunned and looked down upon. It was crazy. They got like 25% apple watches though. haha

    • Used to work at an Apple Store. None of that is true, and employees of Apple stores find out everything the day that everyone else does. We were never told anything ahead of a product announcement. When a new product is released we saw it and held it for the first time about 20min prior to opening the store. Lowest people on the totem pole are told nothing. I knew people who had other phones and no one cared. Yes people who work for apple end up loving the company but no one is brainwashed. Things like this makes an Apple employees life miserable. What makes it worse is asshats who walk in the store and are a smart ass about it and act as if it's some giant conspiracy. In that company everything is on a need to know basis, and people in retail stores are not told much

  • Ok, I'm going to talk basic NAND FLASH STORAGE: The bigger the size the better performance you'll get. comparing 256GB flash storage to a 32GB is ridiculous, I will set my point: 1- You can't test a 2016 Flash storage chips with a 2012 application that it's last update was 4 years ago (old benchmarks, not updated to the latest standards). 2- The write/read speed (performance) of the storage depends on the available blocks, the bigger the capacity the much more blocks you get so the better performance you'll get. 3- Solid state drives or flash drives should never reach their maximum storage because if they do the blocks becomes filled and the performance will decrease that's why you shouldn't fill more than 75-80% of your storage to keep your performance. And looking on 10ish GB available on the 32GB and 238GB you can see with no brainer who got more blocks to store in. I don't think comparing a two cars with different horse powers will get the same performance specially if you compare them with old performance test application!! but who cares, 2.5 million views in 2 days and letting the people smash each others in the comments... way to go buddy 👍🏼

  • You guys don't understand how SSDs work at all. This same topic was posted on Reddit 2 weeks ago we people had a serious conversation about it. THIS IS JUST HOW SSDS WORK. Go on Corsair's website and look at their SSDs. You can see that their sequential write speeds are significantly lower with the lower capacity drives. Apple isn't a scummy company. They wouldn't do something like this on purpose. That'd be the dumbest business decision ever. You guys have to do research.

    @iTGF@iTGF7 жыл бұрын
    • Not entirely true with SSD's at all. Manufacturers always have and will make lower capacity drives slower than higher end alternatives to help influence people to buy the higher end (more profitable) model. That basic business right there. Apple removed the jack to make it waterproof. That's what you're told to think. Samsung managed to make their jack waterproof. Apple didn't want to 'waste' money on R&D to do that just yet. And instead they make more money without the jack on the phone. Any company who makes peripherals with a lightning port pay Apple to make that product. No one can say for sure how much it really is as Apple being Apple make you sign a non disclosure agreement. But it's suspected to be around $50,000 per product. That means if a company makes a 3m Lightning cable in 5 different colours. That's 5 different products, easy (suspected) $250,000 for Apple for literally doing nothing. Stop thinking Apple is the 'good' guy out there looking out for the consumer when they're not... So please, do your research

      @callum200112@callum2001127 жыл бұрын
    • Callum Perkins it's not that they make the lower capacity drive slower, it's that higher capacity drives have more transistors inside, hence more channels for read/write, hence more parallel read/write, hence faster.

    • This is not really true for new 3D nand technology and the way the controllers work. If it were true then the 512GB PCIe ssd should theoretically be twice as fast as the 256. They're pretty much the same speed.

    • Actually you are wrong, 1.34Gbps is not 1.3 GB per second, 8 bits = 1 byte, 1340 Mbps = 162.5 MB/s. 300Mbps is just the limit of the current Wifi technology. nothing wrong about your phone. Have a nice day.

    • Wifi speed to low? Seriously, that's got nothing to to with it, since this was just a disk benchmark. That's an app on the Iphone that writes a file to the SSD and then measures the time it takes. After that the app can calculate the speed. (e.g 84 MB file took 2 sec, that means 42 MB/s) That doesn't require an internet connection.

    • This isn't a Commodore 64. Read and writes are done by the kernel making it contained to the limits in the processor.

  • Dear Unbox therapy! i am using one of the Iphone 7 but i agree with the point you gave but let me tell you the other side of the story! Say the 256GB model is almost full so the TIME taken by the device to read the whole data would be much larger if they use the same system that is being used in the 32GB model! The 32GB model dosent require that much read speed for just 32GB model but if the 256GB model wants to read all the data in the phone then they have to clock up the speed in order to lower the read time! Your point is also right they should tell this but its still understandable to me!

  • Hello. One simple question.Do you know taht This difference in the capacity modify the performance in the others activities? For example: navigate a web, take a photo, send a email, and the other doubt is, the same phone but one with 32 and the other with 256. Will show the difference points in the antutu or other perfomance application?

    @elturkito33@elturkito337 жыл бұрын
  • I don't think speed or performance is too crucial to a smartphone as of right now. Sure, the phone has to run at a tolerable speed, but until they're used for bigger and greater things, I don't think that the average person cares about a slower phone, unless it's extremely noticeable.
