We’ve all got to be very careful with Forums. YES these people have legitimate concerns but people who’ve experienced issues will make a loud noise. We expect very little to go wrong with premium and mid range modern cars. So if something does go wrong, we’re dissatisfied/ angry. The vast majority of people probably don’t have issues and they don’t contribute to forums saying how happy they are. So we’re only getting one side of the story. My 2018 D5 Inscription with air suspension would be in the top 3 cars I’ve ever owned and NOTHING has gone wrong with it since new. 80,000 km and I’m very happy. I considered. BMW X3 and MB GLC. So glad I bought the Volvo.
This is the best car produced by geely
Bought a new Inscription almost 3 years ago has 40k on it, so far all good and still a really enjoyable drive.
People used to criticise Volvo for using Ford platforms, but at least my V70 doesnt cost $1800 to replace the brakes! Say what you want about Ford parts, they are at least cheap.
They are cheap, but required frequently, so there’s that.
$1800 - only if you’re silly enough to get ripped off at a dealer!! $500 tops for parts and a couple of hours labour max. Anyone going to a dealer for servicing needs their head read.
Unfortunately, these Volvos are essentially rebadged Geely vehicles
Ford parts would seem to be an improvement compared to Geely (Chinese) parts🤔
@@yslee1401 they are completely different and there's completely different teams behind the Volvo and geely cars
Quick comment on the EVs. The XC40 Recharge and C40 have liquid cooled batteries unlike older EVs, and as long as the charging limit is set, e.g. to 80%, the battery doesn't really depreciate by time, but by kms driven. While its too early to say how bad it'll be, but if Teslas depreciation is comparable, one can expect it to depreciate fairly quickly at first ~10% in the first 100000km, then slowly, a further ~2-5% the next 100000km. Hence i wouldn't expect these to have a fraction of their range even at 20 years old. Also, here in Norway (special situation i know), the EV versions seem to keep their value better than the ICs.
I bought a brand new XC40 in October last year. Can't speak to long-term reliability or anything like yet, but I'll say that I love the experience so far. On the Google infotainment - I personally think it's pretty good, maybe most people with issues in the functionality department are comparing it to other current systems? I came from a 2014 FG MKII Falcon, so any manner of modern infotainment in a car is great to me haha. That said, I've found it to be user-friendly. No real complaints on it, but I suppose not everyone will have the same experience. Enjoyed the video as usual! Keep up the great work.
My key concern is that Volvo is Geely and Geely is China and controlled by CCP. That begs the question about spyware
I've been a close follower of your amazing video. Thank you for reviewing the XC40. 22 T5 owner here, your comments are spot on. Unrefined start stop, autonomous emergency braking triggers unnecessarily, and I have to replace my brake pads and rotors when it hits 22,000kms. I was really surprised. It is cheaper to replace them (OEM parts) in a workshop compared to Volvo dealership. Our fuel consumption is 10.5km/100km, mostly suburban driving. Not the best imo. Again, thank you for highlighting the child booster seat does not fit, it will help us to pick the right one in the coming months. Other than the above, its still a great car to daily. The build is solid and a very quiet cabin. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the consistently entertaining and informative content Redriven! Happy to say I've finally been able to support you guys when I had to get new wiper blades recently.
Cheers mate! Thanks for the support
Have 2018T5AWD with 60k km bought new, 0 issues. It has been garaged and taken care off Infotainemt glitched only once in 2020. Brake pads on 30% now.
With the XC40 electric and C40 electric the batteries are actually serviceable and recyclable. The system is a modular set up so when your battery start to deteriorate after 10 years Volvo can actually detect what cells are dying and pull them out from the car and replace them with new ones (much easier then a full big battery replacement) and then the cell that gets taken out is actually recycled as well, just a fun fact :)
Most electric/hybrid cars are like that, not just Volvo.
That’ll be $10,000 please!
Thanks for making this video after my IG request a few months ago! My partner and I tested a few used models since then and found the T5 R-Design the was a much more enjoyable and premium feeling driving experience than the T4 or B4 engines. I'll probably steer clear of this one given the long term cost of ownership and lack of warranty on a used version unfortunately. Which is a shame as I still think they're one of the best looking and most practical SUV's on the road. Running the numbers, it works out better to buy a brand new Tesla Model Y on a novated lease than a used XC40 and even a used Rav4 or even an used NX hybrid over 5 years. Unpopular decision I know. Love the channel and the pod, keep up the great work!
True about rear seat (bench). Checked a 2023 demo XC40 and couple of used ones to realise the flat and small rear seats. Dropped from our list almost instantly.
Mate in London bought one and had the clutch fail after 18,000 miles, one month outside the warranty. The dealer had just serviced the vehicle 6 weeks earlier but clearly didn't want to do a warranty job on it.
Reason number 243 not to use a dealer mechanic.
We have one of these in the family and its been fine. Nice, comfortable, not very economic though... Engine pulls well and throttle response is lively, almost feels naturally aspirated!
Hey guys, can you do some videos on bike carriers? Fitment etc. it would be super helpful 😊
Fabulous. Is the S60 in the same bucket re engine reliability?
Just got the XC40 B3 Ultimate on a 3 year lease, comes with a 3 year manufacturer warranty so should be ok, great car so far
Loving the Swedish safety features explanation, Adam!
But Volvos are Chinese, not Swedish
@@yslee1401 Hey mate, thanks for clarifying, but I'm aware. I was referring to where the safety features were presented in a Swedish-style song.
As a long time Volvo owner, to me the XC40 was the very last of the half decent Volvos. The best were the P2 S60/V70 cars that ended in 2007. I have one of these and won’t get rid. They are much better engineered than newer cars. The new stuff today like the EC40 is Geely garbage and a Chinese con - only Volvo part of it is the badge. My friend has an XC40 and it’s nicer than the equivalent Qasquai, and the least offenof the premium small SUV. My money would go a Mazda CX or Honda CRV. The engine note is awful. Great review as always dude.
Funny I was just thinking about this exact model yesterday as a family car
Looked to be a fairly reliable car with first impressions but with the question of long term reliability and maintenance costs being on the cards it definitely feels like one to avoid. Was honestly suprised that a booster seat can't be legally fitted in one especially since some parents with younger kids might buy one. I have a sneeking suspicion Hullsy's not a fan of working on these cars Good work as always guys and look forward to Sunday's video as per usual 👍.
I own 2022 Volvo XC60 B5 Momentum, the only and most annoying thing is the Google infotainment system. Sometimes the sound system doesn't work (including indicator sound) and climate control pops up and down when reversing due to 360 camera. Can't they make it Simple as Hyundai and Kia infotainment system?
I HAD an XC60 on my "maybe" shopping list ... with the extension "maybe not?". It's now confirmed... it's a "maybe not".
It’s a definite no no
Perhaps come up with a ‘should not’? The Volvos would fall under this category
P3 XC60s are decent. T6 engines have a good rep.
@@ProductofNZ The problem are all the other stuff around the engine. I am planning to buy a Dodge Durango... I know that those might have problems. But it's "unique" and the engine and tranny is rock solid (Hemi and ZF). On the other hand ... if I get a Volvo I want reliability. The old V70 times are over.
@@ProductofNZThe D5s are also a good choice if you like a diesel.
Another awesome video! Can you also please review the Mazda CX30? They look great. Thank you!
My sister bought a cx30 and my mum has a Mazda 3 based off the cx30, and they're amazing cars. Gorgeous colours, ultra reliable, cheapish, love them. Just slightly underpowered, but considering the price, that's fine.
@@benwelter8890Did they get the 2.0 or 2.5L? The 2.0Ls are pretty widely regarded to be fairly sluggish.
@@ZacharyT94 my sister got the AWD 2.5, and it's pretty peppy. Mum has the 2.0l, it's sluggish when it's loaded, but honestly, where they live in Toowoomba, it is perfectly fine. Emphasis on fine, it's good, but it could certainly do with a smidge more power, but fine for daily use.
@@benwelter8890 The 2.5 is the go to engine when the 2.5T isn’t available, which we don’t get in the 3 or the CX-30 here in Aus unfortunately, it’s a cracker of an engine, I’ve got it in my CX-5.
Hi @ReDriven - Keen to do a review of a 2017 Lexus IS200t F Sport?
what about a used seat ateca 2021 fr is it good ? I want to get one
I have a 2019 XC40 T5 Inscription. 93,000 miles - no problems. Regular 10k service and replace oil every 3-4k miles (t5 engine burns oil apparently, so i replace frequently). Knock on wood! :D
2020 xc40 t5 phev r design. Currently at 63,000Ks on the clock. No problems to report bar the speaker having a bit of rattle with bass sometimes after a service. Could never get it fixed. Tesla model y facelift is my next motor once released .
I'd buy a Mazda Cx 5 turbo or Lexus NX Hybrid.
Different category to the XC-40, the XC-40 is in the same category as the Lexus UX and Mazda CX-30. The NX and the CX-5 are in the midsize segment, so the XC-60 would be the main target for those.
I cross shopped a CX-5 Akera against an XC40 of the same year. After 4 years they were the same price but the depreciation on the Volvo was insane and the Mazda was about half the price for a major service. A lot of XC40s get dumped before their 75,000 kms service. Both are ok to work on. If I had to own one and work on it, CX-5 every time. The Volvo is the one you want to drive but it takes nearly double the time and effort to keep on the road. I haven’t found an XC40 over 75,000 kms that had a major service and didn’t have the sunroof channels rotted out
@@theairstig9164 I’d absolutely go for a CX-5 even over an XC-60 which is in the same size segment, disregarding price. I own a ‘22 CX-5 Akera with the 2.5T and it is an absolute joy to drive. The Mazda absolutely punches well above its weight.
@@ZacharyT94You clearly haven’t driven an XC60 if that’s the case…
@@rowdus6186 I haven’t and I don’t plan to unless it is a loan/hire, in fact an XC-60 is very low down on my list. I’m very satisfied with my CX-5 and I stand by what I say in that it punches well above its weight.
On a sidenote... If your phone gets super warm while charging... its the phones fault. Not the charger. And its super common for wireless charging. And i guess the USB in the front is for USB sticks full of mp3?
Mum has an XC40 T4 Inscription, has 84k km, its a lovely car, drives beautifully and been reliable so far.
Mazda CX5, Hyundai Tuscon, and Kia Sportage are also lovely cars, drive beautifully, and will be far, far more reliable than a Volvo. .. or any other European brand!!
@@Bill-ki4zf she drove the Tucson, hated it, said she couldn’t get comfortable tested the RAV4, felt too big, she liked the CX5 but, the CX5 isn’t without reliability concerns and the Volvo, she got comfortable within seconds of getting into it. As a small 62 year old woman, the Volvo ticked all the boxes
@@ma77mc The diesel CX5 has reliability concerns. Petrol CX5s are generally regarded as extremely trouble free!
I'd be happy for you to review my kamiq on the central coast
Great job guys I have been curious about this model Volvo for sometime but knowing that the brand has Chinese ownership ends any thoughts of buying one completely of the table … curious point not many Chinese people drive Volvo .
Funny i was just thinking about this exact model tomorrow as a family car. NOT...
I love the nod to Swedish metal. 🤘
Not to throw you a bucket of cold water, but Volvos after 2010 are Chinese. The great Volvos are from the 80s and 90s
except they are not made in Sweden, Euro spec XC40s are made in Belgium and Oz spec made in China and Malaysia with Chinese metal.
@@Azureecosse Volvo originally being a Swedish brand, metal is popular in Sweden. The music over the safety features was a nod to this. Not the actual sheet metal that is used in construction.
Remember all the hype when this collected seem to collect every car award?
Always liked Volvo for being quirky and loved the neighbors xc60 T6….until the supercharged/turbo charger setup started giving grief. Now the dealer that sold it to him advising him how fantastic they are (was)…suddenly he dosent want a bar of it
Try a BMW motorcycle. It’s much worse when the dealers actually have to do warranty things. Like listen.
It's hard to believe that Geely (China) bought the Volvo brand name 14 yrs ago😮
Geely have been trying to camouflage their CCP image for the past 14 years with little or no success
Nice vid. One recommendation. Can you guys review the BMW M125I or the M135i? Thanks 😁

I have a 2021 T5 R, 40,000km and it's awesome. Brakes are fine, tyres are 50%
wait for the expensive services when things go wrong, ill stick to jap cars
I’ve been curious as to how Volvo are in terms of reliability. If you can, please can you review the S60 and S90.
I recently traded my 2017 S90 D4 with 240,000KM on it, only reason I traded was to get a smaller car - the thing was bulletproof. I've owned several generations of Volvos (P80, P1, P2, and P3) and by car the S90 (on the SPA platform) was the best. It's well designed for maintenance, parts weren't overly expensive if you source from an OE supplier rather than genuine, and it's just a great car to drive. These characteristics would be shared with all SPA platform Volvos, however not applicable to this XC40/C40 as it's on the CMA (Chinese designed) platform.
@@user-vv5fl6im4rcan I ask what you paid for your S90 and what you were given at trade in?
They're like any brand. They're reliable if you look after them. Skip services and you'll have problems.
Notice that tyre wear was mentioned. Don't know that I would be using the tyres that were on that car. Would recommend Michelin or Pirelli. I live in Australia so I wouldn't use Continentals in our heat.
it;s not what can go wrong. IT'S IT WILL GO WRONG
These look great, but the servicing prices... Eesh...

@@ReDriventhank you. From Kenya
One issue with this car is they do not want you to service the vehicle yourself. A specific engine oil required by Volvo and it is not sold in the US;only to dealers. If you iu want it, you have to import and it cost about 60 for oil and filter Further more. There is no eng oil dipstick so you have to rely on what a sensor is telling you on the infotainment display.
Sounds like it's not worth the effort or risk
Do a kia Cerato gt
So these cars spontaneously fall apart?
I'll say it again, I used to love Volvo until I owned one. Never again!
Is there a difference in reliability between the European built vs China built cars?
Depends which one of the 44 countries in Europe builds it
Honest;y, it seems the vast majority of all new cars are rubbish and arent worth the ridiculous amounts of money they are asking for them. I have been looking at upgrading and I just dont see its worth it atm.
Batteries will outlast the car guaranteed by a good 20 years Had a great Volvo car which was a 5 cylinder low pressure turbo around 2015 in Massachusetts before they went to trucks
Lexus please.
Geely automotive (Chinese) At least the trucks are still owned by the Swedes AB Volvo
It's not really a Volvo any more. The P3 platforms seems like the last one.
It is a Volvo and Scandinavian so it ages very slowly.😀.

The sad thing is that Volvo used to be incredibly solid mechanically. They were boring but very solid. Now they look much better but have sacrificed engineering.

These shouldn’t wear the volvo badge, nothing volvo about these anymore.

Why are hey such a risk, because they are made of crap
But the first 60,000 kms will be excellent. I am seriously thinking of getting one with over 100,000 kms on it just to see how bad they get. Waiting for the current market to not be the way it is. Lots of leased time bombs coming on to the market. If you know where to look you can spot them
But these volvos are everywhere in Europe 😢
They are everywhere in China. Just that they are called Geely
I don't think any of the 44 European countries would like it to be called Geely 🤔
Volvo is a risk now. Reliability tanked. Especially avoid hybrids. They are not worth the risk.
