    • a goose won't stop dogs. Much as I hate seeing it our village neighbours keep a small yappy dog, usually on a chain, to protect their chickens and it works, we have jackals among other predators. We use electric netting. But a LGD would definitely work.

  • You can build wood decking that is raised 6 inches or so above the ground for the chickens to run under.. build various ones around the gardens where the chickens roam. It will give them cover from hawks and dogs. Make them into viewing stations to put a couple of chairs on to sit and have wine and gaze over your grounds in the evening. Make them large enough that their little trails can't be grabbed by a dog reaching under.

You may not be able to consider this, my family has a Marrema dog they will bond with and protect all the animals on your property , at first patrolling the boundaries and barking a warning and will attack wolves and wild dogs heroically, they are breed to live outdoors. They have a lovely nature soft and patient with children and will not stray beyond your land. I know you will be brave , the love of your family and time can help heal the pain. • People who think chickens don't have personalities don't know chickens! So sorry for your loss! Some of the memories of them are priceless! Put electric fence around your free range area if you can that comes on in the evening or at night. Dogs hate them! A livestock guard dog is another choice also. We have lost none to predators since we got ours, and the electric fence keeps them home and other dogs out. We have about 65 chickens! Love them all! But as you well know, some are very extra special too!

I had to keep doing it every year, but I had a lovely, straight tree that bloomed creamy blossoms in the spring and produced red berries in the autumn. The blooms remained for a couple of weeks.

  • Sorry about your chickie loss. 😔 I have a pretty large flock, but lost 10 of them when I was at hospital during my husband's 10-day stay. Broke my heart, as they ARE all named and like family. It's like the hawks knew I would be gone all of those days. I have since installed netting over their entire yard, which is about 150 feet by 200 feet. The attacks left the remaining birds quite traumatized, but they are quite resilient, when I spend good time with them. They taught me to speak Chicklish, and they all get along with my dogs, cats, and turkeys. I hope you get the mean dog issue straightened out with those owners. THEY should be responsible for paying for replacement chickens. Sending hugs. 🤗

  • Dear Tara, John, Crusoe and Saywer! I saw this episode two hours ago but I wasn´t able to write some words emmediately! I´m still without words! There is nothing good enough to console you! What a loss! They weren´t just chickens, they were YOUR first animals at all and more than just farm animals! And they were really cute with their personalities! Soooo many special moments.... sitting on the kichen top, takeing over your house as theirs and making a mess! Takeing over the little wall as their new way so that they don´t need to jump steps anymore, (Joao hadn´t even finished plastering it) and like you mentioned... Fifi´s footprints will be there forever! And you did right! Taza needed new friend emmediately even though you might not be ready for it! And perhaps you are trying to keep emotionally more distance from the chickens right now, which would be totally understandable, but you will be fine over the time! I´m feeling with you all and big hugs!😪

Your 'brood' of living beings is so integrating and 'ticks along nicely' .... It's so obvious to us outside looking in (lovingly, I might add) how you all, with your neighbours and friends, swing together .... to help, support, work, and care for each other. So grieve for your chicks, precious parts of your band, and love your new additions as you can so wonderfully do .....

  • Hello Newby family. I’m so sorry to hear about the rooster & the chickens. Very sad…… I can understand the pain in your heart…. It’s only human as we do get attached to our animals. Love, love love all that you do on the property. Such hard work…. The end result will give you such satisfaction. The old olive trees will be magnificent. New flowers everywhere & veggies galore. The boys are real troopers helping John remove the old concrete…. Lovely to watch. I never want the videos to end…. I can hardly wait for the next Sunday to come around….. all the jobs are so inspiring….. our Autumn is just starting here in Australia & on the 1st of June winter sets in for 3 months. …… life goes on. Stay well & happy Newby family. Love & hugs to you all. Cheers Noeline from Australia. 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍🌈🌈🌈🇦🇺🇦🇺🍀🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

  • Oh dear, FiFi was such a handsome and special roo! I am so sorry for the loss of him and his flock. I'm glad Budsa survived and that you are getting more chickens for the farm. As for tilling for weed control, it can take awhile to transition to no-till. We have found arborists/tree removal companies who are looking for a place to dump wood chips and have been successful in getting a load dumped once or twice a year in order to use the wood chips to mulch the paths between the rows. They then break down and add goodness to the garden soil. We also use under and around fruit trees and berry bushes and to border the gardens. It is a lot of work for a large garden such as yours, and sometimes tilling is the best answer. Initially we lay large pieces of cardboard under the mulch to smother the grasses/weeds. Etc, etc. Love to you all and your new feathered friends!

And you are so right about gardening. Not everyone has the resources and time to follow recommended practices. You are adding good compost and that's a huge benefit. Plus your garden did amazing well last year, especially considering it was a new garden. Keep on doing the fabulous job you are doing. My thoughts are with you as you heal!

  • Tara, there is nothing wrong with doing some tilling to get the soil ready to accept new soil inputs. Where I live in Georgia, USA, we have heavy clay soil. It has to be broken up before it can be amended for a no till garden. I did raised beds first and that helped. Regarding the loss of your family chickens. I’m so sad you had to experience that particular way of losing them. I started with 10 chicks a year ago and lost one early on then another died recently of some unknown illness. It’s hard. They are our pets and they have their own personalities. I knew I had to heavily fortify my chickens before they could be put in a coop with a yard because we have coyotes, bob cats, owls, hawks and several neighbors have lost their flocks to predators. Sadly, chickens wire is not enough to keep out our predators. I can only let the chickens free range if I’m outside watching them. You and Jon are doing fabulous things on your farm and you are super parents!!! Love you all!❤

I love growing invasive vines and such that most folks avoid, as this is the Desert SW, such things are never far from failure without water, and most will not regenerate themselves as we get a second Spring in the Fall before winter, knocking them out as they sprout. So many different micro-climates! I am reminded that this is the beginning of the newest "El Nino" Event, and so my yarden might get a bit more rain, and a lot less pain of being in the Dry Heat. Last year, the summer begin in the 100's F, and lasted throughout the Summer; I notice many Ash Trees across the city that are not opening this year, just a skeleton of what was. I am not sure what El Nino means to your region of the World, but it is a Natural Phenomena of our Weather patterns...stay Safe, I really felt a part of all of this video. Thank you again!
