  • The joke with Johnny is that he's doing everything that's normal in the 80s un America. He's stuck in the past. He uses popular slang and advertising tactitcs that were very popular in the 80s. No one passes out flyers like that anymore. Karate was super popular in America back then as well as other Asian martial arts. It's very nuanced americana humor. It's written very well in my opinion. The actor of Johnny comes across as very genuine.

The original movie uses Cal State University Northridge gym as the “arena” at the end. I’m sure there’s a lot of videos on KZhead that show real locations that the show used. Terminator 2, Back to the Future and many others were shot on location all over southern California.

  • "In your country, do you guys drink beer at normal temperature?" Alright, so mostly no, beer is typically drunk cold. There are exceptions in some cases, such as stout which should be served a few degrees below room temperature from the tap (though many places also have a chilled tap for stout). There's differences of opinion where lagers are concerned, but in the US, they are typically cold. In Johnny's case, he's doing the time honored tradition of drinking last night's beer. Because (especially when you are living paycheck to paycheck), you do not waste a beer. That's alcohol abuse.

    @rcslyman8929@rcslyman89292 жыл бұрын

    @dtester@dtester2 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah agreed, it was a pretty sloppy kick. I would have thought a basic roundhouse would have been easier at that height, but maybe people were busy focussing on the spin and not the kick. A spin hook would have been too hard for a non practitioner. Years later I can still do one, but it has no power now. Haven't trained for years

  • Something I love about this show is that it really digs deep into how traumatic the “Karate Kid” arc of the story was for both Danny and Johnny. Daniel has a crippling fear of Cobra Kai reappearing not only in his life, but in any kids's life, because the sole words “Cobra Kai” trigger the traumatic memories of his high-school past and he doesn't want anyone else to go through that. Notice how he acts repressively towards anything that could remind him of Cobra Kai because it instantly makes him feel threatened. He tries to stay in control and not act impulsively towards Johnny and the Cobra Kai dojo, but the memories and the stress become too much. The fight or flight response literally comes out of him when he kicks Tom Cole's boba, and he needs to get back to what originally made him feel powerful and safe: karate and Mr. Miyagi's advice. It's all about the instincts he developed in his teenage years, those who have more to do with fears and emotions rather than with rational thinking. The past comes back to turn him into a kid again, and that's why I love this series so much: It deals with those teenager feelings and traumatic experiences the characters have been repressing for 30 years now. It shows how much it hurt them, and how it affects their lives now. It's just that, instead of talking through it and trying, idk, therapy, they kick each other's ass and encourage their kids to repeat that cycle of violence. And I'm honestly enjoying it SO MUCH, KICK EACH OTHER'S ASS AS MUCH AS YOU WANT GUYS, I'M LIVING IT

  • This final scene was a huge deal for Ralph because people had been trying to get him back in that costume from the films on camera for 30 years and he never did to protect the integrity of the original story (and also for the chance to be cast in other roles). So - giving the improbable yet long awaited re-emergence of the "karate kid" a moment alone in the spotlight (backed with the original film score) was spine tingling!

  • As I learned from my boxing coach, the reason for the two hand mitts is: 1. Easier to get new partners to train with and pick up the pads sooner 2. Helps subconsciously train you to be able to catch a punch, which is used usually when you parry and move the punch out the way or sometimes completely stop it.

  • To answer your question, in America we do not drink beer warm nor do we drink it from open cans from the night before, unless you are a hopeless alcoholic. The scene where he wakes up on the floor and drinks beer while he's talking to the principal is to show us how pathetic he feels right then and how far he has fallen. Also some people believe that if you are very hungover from drinking too much the night before introducing a little bit more alcohol into your system might help. It's called "Hair of the Dog." So maybe he might have just been hungover.

In the other hand how Johny (remember he was rich and Daniel poor in the movies) lost everything because he only learn the techniques of karate ( the slogan strike hard strike first is against Okinawa philosophy “karate ni sente nashi “ ) Afterward is ying yang to me. There is no bad students just bad teachers (Sensei’s) ? Comments ?

  • This show often has me agonizing over which Dojo I would choose. Traditional Miyagi Do seems serene and contemplative, focused on the perfection of form and deep learning of technique. Americanized Cobra Kai is more like an army boot camp; loud, stressful, and traumatizing by design in order to foster the mental toughness to keep your wits in a fight, so you can adapt, improvise, and overcome using not just your body, but your surroundings as well. If you've gone the military route, as I did, you keep learning a move here, a trick there, but you become hesitant to concentrate on any style in depth, no matter how effective it is when mastered, because the last thing you want to be in a fight is predictable.

IMHO, what we have here is Miyagi Do as Yin and Cobra Kai as Yang... Its not about choosing either, but; as Miyagi Sensei would probably say; rather about finding your center and balance through life's ups and downs, whether it comes in hard or soft blows. Each way of the warrior has its place in your journey, but if you choose well, it is like the concept of JiGatai... (please forgive any mis-spelling) finding your best positioning to forge ahead gracefully, fiercely, yet composed. As my Shotokan sensei and sempai's taught me so long ago, this finding of balance through life is sometimes represented by the concept of a tiger's strength bound within a circle of discipline, only let out when necessary, but always peaceably within. Like I said, it might be too deep for a simple entertainment show, but there it is. Hope that helps

    • @@hakichiki I won't spoil it for you, but you've made a good prediction of where the story leads. They start by using clips from the movie for a Rashamon-like retelling of the tale from Johnny's perspective, then the old rivalry re-ignites and expands, as both Johnny and Daniel take on more young students, and a duel of Dojos (in the best martial arts movie tradition) begins. This show is much more brilliant, funny, rich and complex than it has any right to be. The martial arts aspects seemed to ring true to me, it's reassuring to know that a real-world Karteka agrees. Look forward to your next react.

    • @@FusionAero I wonder if any of the screenwriters or character builders have good sanseis somewhere back along the path of their journey...? LOL! And no; you didn't spoil anything for me and I went to speedwatch-catchup, and your summary is spot on. I hope they keep the Miyagisms a priority over the cool kicks and trick moves. The balance is great so far, and I love the mini story arcs, not just because it does background so well and so simply, but it also underpins another truth of all martial arts: they cannot change who you are; they only show you how to become who and what you have decided to be. Karate may give you the skill and method to hone your talent, much as a master craftsman forges the perfect weapon... but it is the soul and intent of of the warrior who wields it that will give it legend or infamy... The blade remains unchanged, and like karate, may pass from demon to angel with equal impact, but can also as we see with Chozen, Johnny and Daniel, be a vehicle for you to transform your demons into angels through discipline focus and dedication. Hence we #StriveForPerfectionOfCharacter above all else as karateka (or any other martial artist for that matter. And my thanks for an enlightening exchange! #Ossu!.

    • @@hakichiki Even if they don't have a martial arts background, they have the sense to hire consultants who do. Two dominant themes that you see throughout the series are the" flipping of the script", and the passing of the torch. From the beginning, we see that Johnny has gone from bullying antagonist to sympathetic underdog protagonist. and that the story will be seen from HIS point of view. He is now the eyes of the audience, but he is STILL an @55hole, and will never be the hero. Cobra's writers seem to have studied the mistakes of franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek, that you cant just insert some snotty kid into the universe who is inexplicably better at everything than the original hero, and expect fans to feel anything but insulted. The best heroes are ordinary, unremarkable types who only discover they they have the stuff of greatness, and a heroic destiny, when circumstances put them to the test. The real hero is Miguel. Nothing yet produced or aired shows it, but all the cues are there. Johnny and Danny may learn to overcome their differences, maybe even become friends, but HE will be the one who takes the teachings of both, and combines them to create an even more formidable style of his own. Yin and Yang, Hard and Soft, Serene and Fierce, Honor and Treachery, must all become one in the blink of an eye in a situation where victory is life.

  • 28:12 Boxing, we use two. You're correct. If I didn't hit directly centre of the flat (There were yellow circles on them for my training), my trainer would hit me with it. Training can be brutal. Japanese cemeteries are smaller? Dude...I've been to many. They're huge. Mr. Miyagi (actor) passed away for real. It's a nice thing to acknowledge him.

Turned out there are 3… and I watched till the late night. 😅 I look forward to the next season and think the karate skills of all Chars aren’t bad from my prospective. I look forward to see what’s your thoughts of the karate. Especially in the fights. Best wishes to Japan and stay healthy.

Very well done sensei. I would love to learn karate but unfortunately I'm legally blind and cannot get hit in my face or I will go completely blind in my one eye that I can see out of. I always wished I had my own version of Mr Miyagi or Sifu Ip Man, in my life, such beautiful personalities!

I've enjoyed every cobra Kai episode and the movies. Thank you for reacting to these movies and episodes. I remember I took karate when I was child. I don't remember much now days. Can't kick high enough anymore . As I got older and also need to stretch these old tense leg muscles . Lol... Have blessed day ..may the God bless and enrich you with wisdom....

  • There are a few differences between miyagi do and cobra Kai Miyagi do is made based on goji Ryu and cobra Kai is based on Tang Soo do Tang Soo do is a more modern style with less forms and stances compared to traditional karate. However it does have a lineage dating back to shotokan

  • The events of Cobra Kai (and most of the first and third movies) mostly take place in the San Fernando Valley, which is located in Los Angeles, California. Ironically, the series is mostly filmed near Atlanta, Georgia. Bit of trivia: the Golf n Stuff they show does exist, but it’s in Ventura, California, which is around an hour’s drive from the Valley (depending on where you’re driving from and traffic). There *is* a Golf n Stuff in the Valley, but the one they show is very obviously the one in Ventura.

  • i know how Johnny's kid felt when he saw him be close to another kid. my mother abandoned me during my childhood, so before i found out she never changed when trying to connect with her in my early 20s and we were out at a Denny's, so many little kids just ran up to her wanting to be hugged. she smiled, asked the parents if it was ok, and when she picked up those kids and smiled at them, i almost cried, bc she never gave me that. when she tried to gaslight me when i later tried to talk about how i felt, i knew she would never care about me the same way she cares for strangers' kids, so i cut her out of my life to end the pain
