  • Edgar is imo one of the most underrated directors/writers around. His movies are cult classics while being some of the most beloved in modern British cinema. It’s cool to see him continually get bigger budgets, but stick to similar techniques that made spaced and SotD so bloody good

    • I don't think he's as underrated as he used to be after Baby Driver's commercial success. A lot of people have gotten really interested in his stuff since then.

    • While I agree that Ant-Man is a fairly standard movie, there are standout moments that were clearly either Wright's ideas, or definitely inspired by Wright's work. A good example of it imo is Luis' montages - the quick cuts, the zooms, and the overall comedic theme feels very much like a scene from one of Edgar Wright's movies.

  • It's so interesting to go through Wright's filmography and pick up on all those stylistic flairs that have been there since the beginning. It'll be really interesting to see how his style translates to the more serious horror genre, considering how his previous films have been comedic in nature, or even how he'll create a distinctly Wright-styled documentary. I'd love to see you tackle Peter Jackson's progression from the small self-funded Bad Taste, to the immense multi-film production of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

It would be an ideal world where directors only learned their lessons in film school, but when working with larger budgets the situation fundamentally changes. The lighting example could extend just as easily to post production, or even something as small as which prop people are worth working with and which aren’t. Some directors become better and more efficient as they go on, a director as great as Edgar Wright is certainly in this class.
