Once again, your favorite A&P IA back with another video, and this time, I'm doing a how-to on installing new magnetos. Disclaimer always follow the appropriate manuals and tech data. I'm just showing my process and tips and tricks as to how I do it. Hopefully if you are a Aircraft Mechanic, Pilot or, just an aviation enthusiasts you will find this helpful and at the minimum informative.
have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone!

  • Great video. Thanks for mentioning the importance of firing the impulse before timing the magneto. Very few other KZheadrs mention this.

  • I will forever remember how to properly time and install a slick mag. While working at a flight school I was doing mags on one of their aircraft and left the pin in the mag then turned the prop. Luckily, no damage to the mag. Just had to replace my IA’s timing pin.

  • I do be enjoying your channel. Thanks! Things I thought of while watching: I/O-320/360/720's are timed from the top of the case where the two halves split. Just something to keep in mind for new or rusty mechanics. The takeaway is that not all engines (such as this I/O-470?) are timed from the starter. Just be familiar with your powerplant and always consult the manufacturer supplied maintenance manual, of course! Be aware that there is usually some "slop" in the engine when you are timing the magnetos on the engine. I've seen people (myself included) time them and then after assembly the engine runs kind of rough. So at ~ 7:50 when he goes to spin the prop, it is smart to try and take this slack out and move the prop enough to eliminate this and seat the gear lash, though not so much to pass the compression or run the prop backwards. Not all engines have this issue however (like this engine video'd). But I've found it common on O320/360 and 720s. Especially older engines. Also be attentive to the clocking position of the magneto, generally the LH one. If it is not clocked correctly on the case end (or if the last guy did it right, you shouldn't have to!), it can be very difficult to get one of the retaining nuts on or impossible to actually time the mag as it will contact the firewall engine frame. I've seen this on fresh factory OH motors most commonly. In which case you will have to remove the mag and adjust the clocking from the case end. A simple process in theory, but always seemingly a struggle in practice. It's not unheard of to jump in and clock it "one tooth", re-assemble, and only to find you clocked it the wrong way or one too far. So be cogniscient of which way you need to adjust the mag and spin the case end accordingly/deliberately. Also, use new split ring washers as well! Not just the gasket. I've gotten in and found mags where one nut was working its way off because someone (likely) used old and tired split washers. Or perhaps they just didn't tighten it enough. But better safe than sorry! Feel free to correct me if i'm mistaken here. Just trying to spread the experience!

  • Thanks for posting this video. I might as well get a head start on my power plant training for next year.

  • Informative video. What was the issue with the starter gear not retracting?

    • They were having a hard starting issue and cranked for too long the bendix got to hot and got stuck in the out possion. I ended putting a little bit of LPS 2 on it and got it to retract.

  • I have a stupid question; does one ever just become an expert at maneuvering and positioning when removing and installing parts? I feel like I’m always struggling to figure out the best way to get into tight spaces lol like I have no tactile sense or does it all just come with on the job experience? I figure it can be learned because the IA I shadowed was very good at it LOL

    • There are no dumb questions. I'd say it's honestly something you just learn with time. I Just said this to camera the other day but if you know it's gonna suck. Just embrace it and get it over with. Sometimes the fastest way to do the repair is the most uncomfortable position.

  • Thanks for the video, friend! GA has become my families gathering place since I opened up shop, theres no finer place to raise a family! I'm stabbing mags and installing Power Flow Exhaust System today, with a little help from my 11 year old daughter. Today I'm teaching her how to install mags, yesterday, she all but blead a PA28-151 by herself... a little help from the A&P.🤭 We are at Claremore Regional, Oklahoma - Where are you based out of friend? Hope to see you out there!!! 🤝🏻
