  • JULIA, JULIA, JULIA: The Gipsy Kings were founded by the Reyes brothers, who belong to the Romani people ("gypsies" as the racist umbrella term goes for them, the Sinti, and similar peoples). I say if the band themselves are fine embracing the word, I'd not feel too bad about acknowledging the name. However, I'd simply not go around saying it all the time, of course, but it's okay to say it in reference to them in that brief moment. If the band is chill, you could even email them and ask if it is okay to say it.

Our grandma was born and raised in France (with mostly Slovenian and Italian blood, albeit), but she never shared the culture with any of her children, so it was really interesting for my sister and I to delve into that aspect of our heritage.

    • Well to be fair, just because someone who belongs to the in-group is okay with saying a slur, that doesn't give everyone else permission (is that how it's spelled??). That's how reclaiming works, a minority or opressed group can reclaim a word, but the majority/opressors/otherwise out-group can't because it's not up to them to decide when the word is okay, it belongs to the group now. For instance, with a band like NWA, where N is the N-word, I would look down on non-black people who decide to say the full title.

In this instance, trying to give information about a band and not being able to give the full name is counterproductive. If needed, they could show it on screen in a censored form instead of making a vague noise, for example.

    • @@BigGrabowski I think there are better ways to reccomend the band without saying the slur. For instance, you could say "It's that offensive word for Romani, Kings". It kind of doesn't matter if someone from the group says it's okay, because this is in public with many people who may feel offended, and it doesn't then give a pass to everyone else. It's different if everyone in the room is on the same page, but you've got to know your audience. For an example, I'm black and I hate the N-word. I don't say it, and I feel bad when I hear/read it. But some black people like to give passes to their friends to say it, and that directly contradicts my own agency over the word. In the same way, it's kind of a bad call in my opinion to name your band after a slur, because it's an in-group word being exposed to the world public with no regard to how anyone else in the group might feel

    • ​​@@destinyyoung7347i'm literally the opposite. i vividly know what chartreuse looks like (because of blues clues probably) but vermillion? that's chartreuse to me. even though chartreuse is identifiable to me. edit: upon further thought, i might imagine vermilion as green because veridian is green. i figure there's a french or latin origin to those words (that i don't feel like googling) and just sort of. assume that "ver" means green for some reason. but verdant is also green? so maybe language is just fucking weird and we're all right to be confused.

  • Not to get sappy on a random vod but one thing I love about drawfee is that they really (indirectly) encouraged me to embrace my cringe interests. I used to be so embarrassed about a lot of things I liked and I never drew fan art bc I was so scared of being seen as cringe, but between fan art episodes and stuff like this I realized that if people this cool don’t care about what’s “cringe” maybe I shouldn’t either. I’m way more confident about myself and my interests now. It was just real cool hearing them say in this vod that being cringe doesn’t matter and to just like whatever you like :)

  • Vague drawing idea: You start out with a specific concrete prompt. Half way through it's revealed "actually, it's..." something else. Like drawing a new Yorker cartoon, but actually "it's an alien dystopia". A pokemon mashup is "a dinosaur lie" , or the antihero fursonas drawing is actually "conceptual abstract art".

  • Julia's story @41:00 is giving me sensory memories of a time I, in my social ineptitude, complained for like 20 straight minutes to a friend (who liked me, pretty obviously) about my crush (who was being an asshole.) To the friend's credit, they gave very even keeled advice, and did not make their feelings present in the moment, but damn. I feel so bad still, over 10 years later.

I hugged the bassist and when I pulled away, I accidentally slapped him in the face. He and I are the type of people that apologize CONSTANTLY, so we made a pact that in lieu of that, for personal growth, we would instead tell each other to go F ourselves when we had the urge to say sorry for totally benign stuff, like throwing away an empty bottle, or closing up a bag of chips that’d been sitting open and untouched for hours. I ended up hurtling a very loud, “Hey Jesse!… F*CK YOU!!! 😂😝”, at him from across a parking lot, and he COMPLETELY FUMBLED, DIDN’T QUE INTO WHAT WAS HAPPENING, ZERO RECIPROCATION, SO I LOOKED LIKE A MONSTER IN FRONT OF ABOUT 20 PEOPLE.

  • hey, musician here. I'm sure dude was still happy you recognized him, even if you were looking for the singer. Bands are like families. if someone praises someone else in your family, it still makes you feel good, right? oh, and just a side note, if people are talking through your set, you're not loud enough. that's not on them. people just like what they like. you want to be able to captivate every person every night, but you know how it is. they might only be there to see their friends or have a drink or something. so we don't take it personally. however, we do punish it with increased volume.
