Inline skating, or rollerblading as many call it, is a lot of fun, and can also be a great substitute for your onice training during the summertime. It's also slightly easier to learn than ice skating.
In this video, I briefly talk about the equipment you need to get started, and then show you how to step by step get moving on your wheels!
Check out Part 2 of my learn to inline skate tutorial: • Learn to Inline Skate ...

Awesome. Big help for me. Trying to learn Inline skating at the age of 50 is not too easy actually :-)
Joerg Hecke Glad I could help! Yeah I know- it’s always easier to learn things when you’re younger :D
😢😢😢
Never too late! I learned at 40
Me too haha I’m watching video now and practice
I’m learning at nine
I learned a trick called "falling" and i discovered that i'm pretty good at it.
The best advice I can give is to just wear them, wear until you start feeling it natural with it. Stand up and do little steps by step while holding on, do the exercise shown in this video. Take a break and sit, then go back. Do this until it start feeling natural, you’ll start getting good results. Don’t rush, just know that this will be something that will take days.
Ok, thanks for your advice
Will do!
Thx man
Love to watch. I am now so much obsessed about skates
unlike many so called skating gurus out there, you really are trying to teach something and I thank you for that.
Thanks a lot!
33 years old, half a world away, and this was truly helpfull. Thanks!
You're welcome! Glad that I could help!
I'm getting back into inline skating after 20 years and I'd always use wrist guards..they saved me from shattering my wrists many times in the past. First instinct when you fall is to put your hands out, the guards absorb and redistribute the force going into your wrists... Excellent video.
thank you!
Hey! Do they give you any grip? Cause mine has a metal part and I feel like I’d probably slip more further with them 🤔🤔
@@SASPayne1D i have a metal part too it gives you grip
@@SASPayne1D that's the point 😊 when the wrist skid, although it might make you hit with elbows etc they prevent the wrist catching which is what usually makes it fracture. just like mc gloves are designed for us bikers. you want to skid along because the slower you stop, granted your kit is good enough to not rip off the less blunt force trauma you get.
I read your comment amd still figured I wasn't gonna do much with the skates on and before I knew it I hit the concrete hard with my feet in the air. Luckily I didn't hit the back of my head. Definitely sprained my wrists. Now I am scared of skating
thank you so much for this how-to!! my dad bought my first pair of inlines when i was 15 (thought i was gonna learn roller hockey eventually), but due to my poor balance, fear of injury, and general weeniness, the skates collected dust instead. half way through this video, i was able to push with my foot and hold all my weight on the other, skating across my bedroom. it's late at night and im sure ill wake somebody up if i continue, but im having so much fun. i'm 23 now and im very excited to finally put these skates to good use!
That’s awesome! Just don’t break anything in your bedroom😃😃😃
Lol same, i was just a lazy kid and now at 24 I want to actually learn
Nice… how is going? I noticed that they new models are easier than the old ones from when I was 15😂 I got a new pair for me… I can see the difference.
Hope your feet didn't grow! 😄
Love to watch. I am now so much obsessed about skates
This was the best tutorial I have seen so far! Beginner here!!! 💪💪
glad I could help!
@@MarcelsHockeySchool I agree! It’s totally detailed tutorial.
@@MMM-jg7gv that was my goal! Thank you!
I am a beginner and I realised yesterday that keeping my body leaning forward with knees bent helps me find my balance faster. Also keeping the blades slanting outwards helps in the same respect. And keeping arms in front of my eyes helped a lot too.
Glad to hear that that all helped you!
Your blades shouldn't be leaning outwards because it nean you have weak angles most of the time
That's a bit mean not to upset u
I looked so dumb trying to ice skate this winter so I’m going to practice over my winter college break and try to translate what I learn from rollerblades onto the ice rink, thanks for the video I’m going to use all of your tips 🙂
You’re welcome! That’s a good idea👍
today my first time learning inline skate. I already balance myself. this is very helpful
Glad I could help you out!
How did it go for you? How much time did it take to skate confidently?
Love to watch. I am now so much obsessed about skates

Thanks, man
Thanks ALOT! u saved so much time
I just decided to learn this thing, and by far your tutorial the best I've seen, and I cannot really tell you how many are already behind me. Thanks!
Thank you! I'm glad I could help you!
Just a suggestion on wrist guards: Absolutely get them. I was an avid rollerblader in the VERY early days of its resurgence in the very early 90s. We did handrails, big steps, halfpipe and bowls and just a whole lot of random stuff. You have wheels on your feet. This is fine for when you fall forward. But when you are just starting to learn, you are not only learning to skate but you are also learning to fall. And one of the most dangerous and extremely common mistakes is falling backwards. Your will automatically throw out your hands and try to stop your fall, arms straight and essentially take your whole body weight + momentum force on your wrists. They will break. This is the most common 'serious' injury that I have witnessed, repeatedly. From beginners to experts.
Best beginner tutorial I've seen so far. Definitely will work on this. I'm going on day 5 of learning to rollerblade. This should help.
Thank you! Glad I could help!
How is it now
Oh, you explained so clearly for a 56-year-old. I'm adding inline skating with gym workouts as a cardio day. Very helpful. Thank you so much.
That’s great! Glad I could help!
Just don’t break your back

I’m 43 and I just bought rollerblades and all the protective gear, I’m so nervous but excited and this video helped heaps thank you 💚

This tutorial is excellent. I’m starting to learn this in my 50’s I’ve already started practicing after watching it. What I learned here has been very helpful.

I stepped into a pair of skates for the first time in my life earlier this week. (I’m 30) I’ve managed to scoot around my garage a little but I’m still relying a lot on supports. I can’t seem to get the hang of balancing without my legs wobbling. Not gonna give up though. Thank you for this video!
You’re welcome and good luck!
Right there with you. Taking it back up at 38 to help train for hockey, and these videos have been really helpful
Thank you so much, I used to blade as a teen I’m 38 now, want to get back to it! Very helpful, great memories came back while watching you.
Thanks! I'm glad the vid brought back some good memories!
Thank you so much for this video. I ordered my first pair of inline skates and they just came today and my protective gear comes tomorrow. So I'm excited to go to my skate park across the street and start learning. Your video definitely have me some pointers on what to do and what not to do.

Great! That’s good to hear! Yes if you can ski it does help with skating👍
@@MarcelsHockeySchool the speed increases rapidly and it gives a scare 😁. I am having to instantly switch to inverted V to slow down by the 3rd stride. It spoils the fun. Any tips to skate at reduced speed instead of constantly trying to slow down?
@@vjayvenkat Hmmm...not really....because when you just glide you’ll slow down automatically. If you don’t push off as strong, you won’t gain as much speed.
@@MarcelsHockeySchool I went to practice on a slightly rougher surface and I am all good now. It will be great if you can post a video on turning as well.
@@vjayvenkat here are a bunch or drills to do on rollerblades: kzhead.info/sun/n6uRg6qZkaCPras/bejne.html and there is a sequel to that on technique as well. Unfortunately I don’t have a pure turning video- only on-ice.
I love this tutorial of yours Sir! I will definitely try this now~ 😃🙏🏻

This was great. Much better than any I’ve seen for a beginner like me. Well, I haven’t skated since middle school. This mama is just getting back into skating to try it out and to be active with my kids. But I’m finding it hard to get started again. Plus. I think it’s mentally as well. Was rollerblading my whole childhood. Never ice skated. 5 years ago decided to give it a try. Needed 1h to adjust and since then im hoooooked! Now I want to try inline hockey.
Cool! Yeah it’s a bit different, but if you rollerblade well it makes ice skating much easier to learn.

This is the tutorial I’ve been waiting for!
BigTwitchy that’s awesome to hear!
Marcel's Hockey School I know it’s a big ask, but could you maybe do a short video on a couple of different stopping techniques specifically for inline hockey? Most tutorials I find are more for generic skating, but I’m sure that some of the techniques make little sense on the fiel.
BigTwitchy I will try to find someone to do this for next summer- because I’ve had a lot of requests for this but I can’t actually properly “stop” on rollerblades myself. Rollerblading is more of a summer hobby for me- I’m much better on ice skates 😃
The same goes for me!. Thank you Marcel.

I‘m so glad to hear that :)
Great video!! It was a great help for my 4 teenagers!! They followed all your recommendations and were skating in no time. However, I would still recommend using the wrist guards... I purchased all the safety equipment, however, they all removed the wrist guard as you mentioned it gives zero wrist mobility... After 1 hour, my youngest (14) felt on her wrist and ended up with a fracture and a cast for 3 weeks! Ouch!
Glad I could help! Sorry for the injury though- get well soon! Yeah wrists guards really still have me undecided; I guess it’s also because I’m from a hockey background and you can’t hold a stick if you use them.
I just got my skates yesterday and I just laced this so this is a huge help! I'm working on carpet right now cause I just got my protective gear but I feel like I should work on building a better foundation before I go outside. I'm gonna work on all these things beforehand because I have no foundation at all.
Good luck! Take it slowly; if you're still not confident, working on the carpet is totally fine!

Just started inline skating a while ago morning and it is not easy as a first time skates. However, I believe in "no pain no gain". We can do thisa
Oh yeah, you can do it! Just keep working at it consistently!
I tried inline skating for the first time yesterday. I had no protective gear because I just borrowed some skates to see if I liked it. I had a blast, but should have definitely worn wrist guards. When I fell I instinctively caught myself with my hands every time. My wrists hurt so bad today, that I want to advocate the wrist protectors to every other beginner, seriously should have worn some! My friend also told me he always wears them after breaking his wrists multiple times. Stay healthy and have fun guys!
This helped me sm! As an 11 year old with nothing to do but play video games and go to school this really helps! I just got roller skates today and wanted to learn to use them.
Glad I could help and rollerblading is much better than playing video games!
