  • Timothy, sometimes in life you just get a rock in your hammer. It’s a tale as old as time. Glad you found it and are getting all your hammers “rock free”.

  • Hey, I’d check the electric motor again just to be safe. Get a multimeter and test motor winding resistance. So, unwire the motor verifying you know which wire goes where. Test across all three windings. You shouldn’t have more then a few ohms of different between them. If you find that one winding has more or less resistance, then you know that the motor needs to be rebuilt. Being that there mere melted wires, definitely could have an issue like this. And that the motor is drawing its full load amp at 75% rate definitely a sign to take a look. Hope this helps

  • That power hammer defiantly rocks.

  • Multi-phase motor with a phase with melted wire connectors. The motor winding has a short, be it intermittent and with heat will get very bad. A short in an electric motor winding doesn't always kill the motor, they can present as down on 'power' but will still draw similar loads. I'd say the VFD is very good at hiding the winding issue due to how they function to create the soft start and multiple phase array. Also reading the power draw off the VFD won't give you information on winding issues, as VFDs inherently 'limit' power output so would hide a short very well. I'd take the back cover off of the electric motor (non-output side) and check the windings to see if you can see discoloration in any of the windings, it's usually fairly noticeable blackening/purple discoloration. Check the bearings on the motor too, failed bearings don't always give symptoms until they're really bad. Could be another explanation for power loss.

    • Shorts always kill electric motors!!! The only motor who can survive a short is a DC

      @gary00832@gary008322 жыл бұрын
    • @@gary00832 that's not true, as it depends entirely on how bad the short is and where in the windings. Had multiple AC multiphase motors with intermittent faults or showed as down on torque.

    • @@josephgriffiths7656 just a matter of time until it pops when you throw it across the lines! Ever pinpoint a short, they’re usually down it the slot somewhere.

  • New operating procedure for procuring and operating a refurbished old power hammer. Open it up to see if anybody stuck something inside! Sometimes when you get old equipment you find out that there's stuff inside of it that isn't supposed to be there. It's like cracking open a pinyatta and finding car parts falling out instead of candy. It's surprising weird unexpected and yet it happens.

  • I have a feeling its possibly shoring inside the electric motor, and itll only occasionally do it if it gets warm. that might be why it melted the one connection and will pull down the way it does. it could also be a capacitor if it has any

  • Someone put that rock in there years and years ago on purpose. It's probably too big to fit through any holes going into the hammer but small enough that it wouldn't cause any noticable flow issues. That person is probably long past and laughing their ass off in their coffin right now.

  • Hiya Timothy Iust found you and am amazed to see I have the same hammer.Bèche.I have always considered it a "no name"hammer as I found it in the veld(I live in South Africa)with all the name plates missing.I beleive its a bit bigger(3cwt) I run it off a 33kw motor as I knew no better and power was cheap(30yrs ago) I would like to reburbish her and install a smaller motor as I run my forge off solar power,which we have TONS of.Could you possibly tell me what size motor would run it?I havw a 100kg beche too that I run off a 12kw with a vsd but I fear the 3cwt will be too big. I would GREATLY appreciate your feedback. Wa4m greetings from darkest Afrika Paul Mikula
