Timothy, sometimes in life you just get a rock in your hammer. It’s a tale as old as time. Glad you found it and are getting all your hammers “rock free”.
Hey, I’d check the electric motor again just to be safe. Get a multimeter and test motor winding resistance. So, unwire the motor verifying you know which wire goes where. Test across all three windings. You shouldn’t have more then a few ohms of different between them. If you find that one winding has more or less resistance, then you know that the motor needs to be rebuilt. Being that there mere melted wires, definitely could have an issue like this. And that the motor is drawing its full load amp at 75% rate definitely a sign to take a look. Hope this helps
I'd definitely buy a "Rock in my hammer " shirt.
Or the thumbnail of Tim with the puzzled look, holding the Rock over the power hammer and the caption saying "How'd that get in there?"
That power hammer defiantly rocks.
Multi-phase motor with a phase with melted wire connectors. The motor winding has a short, be it intermittent and with heat will get very bad. A short in an electric motor winding doesn't always kill the motor, they can present as down on 'power' but will still draw similar loads. I'd say the VFD is very good at hiding the winding issue due to how they function to create the soft start and multiple phase array. Also reading the power draw off the VFD won't give you information on winding issues, as VFDs inherently 'limit' power output so would hide a short very well. I'd take the back cover off of the electric motor (non-output side) and check the windings to see if you can see discoloration in any of the windings, it's usually fairly noticeable blackening/purple discoloration. Check the bearings on the motor too, failed bearings don't always give symptoms until they're really bad. Could be another explanation for power loss.
Shorts always kill electric motors!!! The only motor who can survive a short is a DC
@@gary00832 that's not true, as it depends entirely on how bad the short is and where in the windings. Had multiple AC multiphase motors with intermittent faults or showed as down on torque.
@@josephgriffiths7656 just a matter of time until it pops when you throw it across the lines! Ever pinpoint a short, they’re usually down it the slot somewhere.
New operating procedure for procuring and operating a refurbished old power hammer. Open it up to see if anybody stuck something inside! Sometimes when you get old equipment you find out that there's stuff inside of it that isn't supposed to be there. It's like cracking open a pinyatta and finding car parts falling out instead of candy. It's surprising weird unexpected and yet it happens.
Why is there a rock in my power hammer? That's a first for me. Never heard that before.
2:55 The fine stuff you see is the same stuff that settles on everything in the shop.
Just an idea maybe do a collaboration with one of these restoration channels. Have them come to your shop.
you can get those bolts in all different angles. We deal with 82* 90* and 100* at work commonly
Great work Tim! Keep it up!
Awesome work restoring that power hammer - your attention to detail really seems to be paying off! 👍
Rock on man!
I ordered the modern melton wool and a blanket from Anian! Already have a bottle opener. Now I just have to get my hands on one of those axes.
You could get a clip on Ameter to check the current across each phase/windings perhaps the motor needs rewinding this happens with age.
Wish I could go back it time and buy one of these Beche or Nazels after they were obsolete and ignored by industry yet before they caught the eyes of everyone when you tube started showing them .
Holy cow, Martin is freaking strong.
Timmothy always good to see a new video my friend. Tool matnice is always good to keep up on. Can't wait to see more videos soon my friend. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend timmothy. Forge on. Keep making. God bless.
Good job, check your engine belts
Lots of stress in those guys!! Wish you the best on repairs
You might have moisture in your motor windings. I’d look into putting a motor heater on it to keep the motor warm and keep moisture out when it’s not running
I’ve often wondered about the exhaust from my hammer. I will be fabbing a mesh cover today!
HI Tim and Martin , I rebuilt mining Equipment as a job many years ago and some of the things we found were gross. As for your exhaust out let cap the end with wire mesh . :)
I have a feeling its possibly shoring inside the electric motor, and itll only occasionally do it if it gets warm. that might be why it melted the one connection and will pull down the way it does. it could also be a capacitor if it has any
Someone put that rock in there years and years ago on purpose. It's probably too big to fit through any holes going into the hammer but small enough that it wouldn't cause any noticable flow issues. That person is probably long past and laughing their ass off in their coffin right now.
^^^Most likely explanation^^^😁 One of those jokes that takes 1 minute to set up and a lifetime waiting for the laugh
Hahaha we meet again my old friend
I’m with you on being cold natured. It could be blazing hot outside and my skin is still cold feeling. 🤷🏼♂️ I goin now to check out the jackshirts😉. They look pretty sweet.
Make for longevity with the toolds available. Tools to suit the materiels available, in 1000 year maybe all the surface materiels will be recycled. My pond has newts but no frogs.
I would add a screen or some type or rodent block to the end of that pipe. I bet it was something trying to make a home. Ive found all kinds of odd stuff at the ends of pipes because of critters.
Get the motor MEG'd. It could have a slight short that you cant measure without putting a few thousand volts through it.
A short is a short and even a tiny one would burn the windings
How many years is the lifespan of leather seals?
Tim! I was thinking mouse. And when you reached in there, I was thinking not a mouse, not a mouse! Maybe someone was repairing it and their kid came up and dropped a rock in there. I can so imagine that! Hi Martin! Also I love the power hammer videos! And I love your shirt/jacket!!!
Hey I put that rock in there for a reason. I hate it when I get a job done and still have a rock or few bolt or a nut leftover 🤔
Screw terminals caused an allergic shock in the german electrics. It craves Wago connectors.
Hey Tim, maybe put a screen on the end of the exhaust pipe.
Not just Any old rock, a smooth river rock, did the ship sink and then they rescued the hammer?🤔🤔🤔
We have a new nickname for the power hammer. We should call it Meathead, it sounded just like a bulldog lol.
Hiya Timothy Iust found you and am amazed to see I have the same hammer.Bèche.I have always considered it a "no name"hammer as I found it in the veld(I live in South Africa)with all the name plates missing.I beleive its a bit bigger(3cwt) I run it off a 33kw motor as I knew no better and power was cheap(30yrs ago) I would like to reburbish her and install a smaller motor as I run my forge off solar power, which we have TONS of.Could you possibly tell me what size motor would run it?I havw a 100kg beche too that I run off a 12kw with a vsd but I fear the 3cwt will be too big. I would GREATLY appreciate your feedback. Wa4m greetings from darkest Afrika Paul Mikula
I really like to see this beche you have there it was build 60 miles from where i live 💪
I love the videos, it's uncanny how much you resemble Timothy McVeigh...
I've seen people put rocks in things as a filter, also to 'catch moisture' although I'd pay the few bucks for a dessicated exhaust filter
Oh we have metric, imperial and Whitworth style bolts on the machinery I work on. It's impossible sometimes.
That rock looks like it came from a beach on ocean . Hope you get her running tip top soon .
Hey Tim I was wondering if I could get my rock back…not sure how it got there but I’ve been looking for it for some time now
Just wanted to say I ordered a shirt for myself but seeing as I’m a bit on the plus plus size dept I will probably immediately be handing it down to my wife. (At least until I drop my Covid 50, lol). Thanks for the discount code and keep up the great content. Cheers from rainy Duncan.
Tim, you should forge an axe from CPM T15, I'm curious to see the results.
Wait 82°? Like, WTF? Just, why?
Tangent: is that a Majestic Forge Artists Deluxe you're using? I've been holding my finger over a Buy button for a year now.
I see now that it's not so hope you see and comment, Tim & Co.
I'm thinking Forgemaster. Looks like a more robust design.
Is it belt drive?
Thats not a boulder!!! Its a ROCK!! ohhh the pioneers use to ride these babies for milesss!!!
Did anybody else notice it shoot a spark in the background at 15:41? Just shoots across the orange thing in the background really quickly. Shoots more at 16:13.
Not a spark, it's oil dripping down from both sides of the ram piston, the frame rate on the camera makes it look like it's going up, but if you go frame by frame (< & > buttons) you can see the oil dropping, nice catch though.👍
I’m not sure but if you keep your cell phone over your heart it’s not a good idea.
Try running the VFD AutoTune when the motor is hot
Sensorless control helps to maintain RPM to
You should frame that rock! Not every day you find a rock in a power hammer haha.
Keep following your nose Timmy! From your Canadian friend Up North.
New lucky rock.
Maybe a leg of the motor got damaged when you had the poor connection and cooked that wire.
I don't know why the countersink angles are different but I suspect there's some reason. I'm surprised you switched them over... Doesn't McMaster have the right hardware? Anyyay, thanks for bringing us along on this millwright-archeology expidition. I'm sure the lights and camera are annoying but this is one-of-a-kind footage that's now on the internet forever.
Because metric sucks...lol
Keep that rock and make it sharpen your knives to make amends for being a free loader for so long.
Great tip on the Anian jacket, when I think sustainable clothing its usually stupid expensive like Untouched World, but Anian seem to make good stuff at a realistic price. Thanks again.
كيف حالك.اتمنى ان تكون بخير.Ihope that you are fine..
Well it does look like a toilet !??!?!?!
Am guessing your power hammer was in a flood as that’s a river rock. Seems like it was salvaged and pressure washed and then sold.
Are you happy to see me or just have a rock in your power hammer
Every good hammer needs a rock inside - don’t pull it out 😅
Just keep hitting, it’ll fit 😝
👋
should have kept the rock and called the rock hammer
⭐🙂👍
Come for the power hammer, and end up buying a new wool shirt!
Never easy is it? Haha
Can you put something on screen during sponsorships to make it easier to skip?
Scrap those useless wire nuts they are unreliable and can't handle the current, use a good quality connector block
Uhh.... Why don't you weld a loop on that top part you used the super-sketchy-rachet-strap? That way, you have something solid to use the next time you lift it out. But, hopefully no next time?
Easy miantenance fail
Hi Tim First one to comment Great Channel
bro you meed to work on your thumbnails and subjects js
