Shabani wanted the food that Ai, the female, had in her hand, but Ai did not hand it to Shabani, but handed it to Ai's brother, Kiyomasa.
Shabani then gestured like, "Why don't you give it to me?" Ai was so miffed that she came at Shabani.
Shabani was startled by Ai's angry expression and backed away.
If Shabani had gone at Ai, they would have had a big fight.

Shabani isn't scared of his females. He loves to stir them up and play the chase game. He keeps them in shape and entertained. He's a good male.

I think it had something to do with what Kiyomasa handed to Ai .... Shabani wanted nothing to do with it. I think it was a dead bug.

I wonder why Ai hasn’t had another baby . Is it because Annie had to be hand reared?
I think it has to do with both Nene and Annie; since it was only quite recently that Nene stopped showing interest in mating and Ai typically being more evasive, Shabani developed a preference for Nene. Also including the initial lack of maternal instincts Ai had with Annie and that she had to be raised by the zoo keepers, Ai never seemed overly intent on mating to begin with. It could be that Shabani is used to her rejecting or evading him so perhaps he doesn't associate her with mating as much as her mother Nene.

@@peterl1287 Great accurate comment, Nene is jealous of her daughter, she doesn't treat Ai very well, Nene throws daggers with her eyes at her.. Being from the wild she was queen, now she is old & tired.. Ai is submissive to Nene.🤔

@@sonjavandam1306 Excellent observation, it must be a strange position to be in, even for a gorilla. But Nene is old and wise enough to know/feel exactly as you've said, and I believe her awareness of her age in relation to mating with Shabani, along with that jealousy as you said it must be tough for her. Complicated furthermore by the mother/daughter relationship. Although I sincerely hope that Ai/Shabani do have another child, I want to see how massive this lineage will become! (Ai is a very large/well built female)
