Wolves Watch Me Planting a 100 Acre Food Forest for Wildlife and People - Bear, Moose, Deer, Turkey
Wolves howl at my dog and me while I plant fruit trees and shrubs in my enclosed food forest and then clear thick forest to plant more fruit, nuts and herbs for deer, moose, bear, turkeys, grouse and other wildlife in the Canadian wilderness.

Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. First Post: my wife and I have watched you since the early days. Your channel was her favourite and we sat together watching you and Callie for many happy hours together. She sadly passed away last year, but the opening banjo music and the nature sounds and your talk over never failed to raise a smile. Heartfelt thanks.
I’m sorry to hear that she passed but happy that she got some pleasure from my videos.
Oh. So sorry to hear about Callies passing. She was a staple in all of the videos! Thank you Callie. You were loved by millions!
Shawn's work pace is incredible. I'm 58 and retired (only five years older than Shawn), and do keep up a decent pace of work gardening and building stuff on my property, but it would be hard to accomplish what Shawn has over the years in the same amount of time.
No one is like Shawn James.
Just be you and make a happy life 😊
Well it is his full time job
Remember most of our great great grandpa and grandmas lived this way. Some still do, but we applaud you Shawn for keeping the past alive so we can return to the better days.
Yep my grandfather did everything with a wheelbarrow and shovel. He even farmed with a horse until 1938
I must be a little younger, my great grand parents farmed with a team of mules but we are in Missouri. We still own a piece of the land, been in our family since 1857 and it will be my inheritance. Just below our hill they are buried on our land next to the creek on a high bank and the foundation of the log cabin my grand father was born in.
Right, had their own sawmill, 4 wheel tractors, chain saws and ordered all their plants and trees from online merchants… Not!
No they didn't.
Mine didn’t have any trees. They lived on the prairie.
Greetings from the Bieszczady Mountains - Polish wild forests

Hello there, from the Minnesota Sawtooth Mountains!

Fuck yeah, Which Town?
Yes. The wind, the forest sounds…I can feel Mother Nature. I just cut the grass so the smell adds to my enjoyment.
It's a very rainy and wet spring this year... even in Italy (I live in Sanremo). It was not possible to prune, to prepare the soil and more...and weeds are really growing wild! But after a time of drought...rain/water is welcomed blessed! Congratulation for your projects, and the trees planting. i really appreciate what you said at a certain point : "may be I won't be able to see some harvest from the trees that I am planting, but it will be for the future generations." Your spirit matches my own one...I too do similar things in my garden for the next generations. It means for me to take care of Life. Grazie Shawn!
We've had a very wet, cold spring here in the Puget Sound/Samish Sea area.
Enjoyed this video Shawn, hearing all the beautiful relaxing sounds of nature so relaxing enjoyable to hear. The very best therapy we can receive its free for the enjoyment. I live it love it, so grateful. Cali seems to pick up on your vibes is staying close, she could smell them as they could smell her. There is always lots of work come spring. I love it, enjoy the wonderful fresh air. Cali is on guard taking it all in, she is so beautiful healthy looking. Thank you Shawn for sharing , that in itself takes time is a lot of work. You do an outstanding job at it. We appreciate you.
I'm watching at night in West Virginia and all I can hear are the noisy frogs and crickets outside my window 😂
Málo ľudí na svete, má srdce a dušu k prírode, ako vy, dlho sledujem vaše videa, patrí vám moja vďaka 💗
Pozdravuji na Slovensko.
To je resnica brat! Lep pozdrav iz Irske.
LOVE THE SOUND OF THE BIRDS AND ITS SO PEACEFUL AT THE SAME TIME ... I LOVE MY PEACE AND QUITE TOO.
@2:00 in - a White-throated Sparrow.
I can’t put into words how much I enjoy your work and videos. I absolutely thrive in the fresh air and really hope to retire into an area even a fraction of such natural beauty you have around you. Once my service is finished I will be striving for such a life with such tremendous tranquility as yours.
Waiting until your "service" is finished may be too late my friend.
@@fgb3126 starting to think that I must admit!
Love hearing wolves out when I'm camping.
Hello❤
Thank you for allowing us to see your world, Shawn. We've been watching for years. Your videos are must see TV, and you are appreciated in NW Wisconsin.
It's so relaxing watching this man and his sweet pup Cali 🐕❤ Living the old fashion ways brings back memories.. those wolves 🐺 would be a little SCARY for me so close .. stay close to daddy Cali 🐕❤
FYI the golden retriever's name is Kelly, just so you know, not trying to, well you know...sorry❤
@@leegoldman7491..." REALLY " everyone else calls this retriever CALI including her OWNER... so stop criticizing me and my message 😠
@leegoldman7491 ya you are wrong on that
@@leegoldman7491 Cali's name appears in the video description, about half way down.
As always, well done and much appreciated, Shawn James. You're an inspiration!
Your video's are very soothing views sounds and weather sunsets thanks 🙋♀️
I started tomatoes from seed, 18 seeds….. figured half would germinate, nope they all grew!
You live the way everybody wants to live. To be honest with you. It's an amazing way to live.
love all that you are doing now and for future generations shawn!
Spreading the ashes from the woodstoves around the fruit trees will help raise the soil Ph.
i do so miss the sights sounds and smells of being out in the boonies ... there is something so relaxing about it
Protect Cali at all cost!! That dog has an amazing life!
Your work in the forest energizes me to get busy in my home with some container gardening which is all I can do in Phoenix, AZ. I really miss my tress and perennials that I planted in homes that I have lived in for the past 65 years. New families are enjoying my plantings. I am planting citrus trees here for the next owner.
So cool! Teaching Cali the different bird sounds, she’s one smart dog
The cranes echoing in the forest sounds so cool
it is very useful to plant blackcurrant bushes. cook jam in winter with tea and it is delicious and healthy instead of sugar.
A Man, A Dog and Nature….Life is good❤❤ Love your videos. I cannot afford patreon so I truly appreciate your u tube videos
Nice to have you continuing your journey
Великий труженик и ценитель природы, благодарю тебя🙏. Thank you, mr James🙏
Vous prenez tellement soin de votre nature c'est juste magnifique 🤩👍🙏👏
Another awesome video. Thank you, Mr James for all the hard work that goes into producing these high quality and very informative videos.
Right On 😊
Shawn is nice to see you, you going to have a great garden.
Another great video. I love watching these. It’s like everything I would do if I were young and healthy.
Have done simular with my property in Wi. Planted over 50 fruit trees on my farm and lots of High Bush Cranberries? My farm is full of mature White Oak , Red Oak, Hickory, Cherry and Hackberry trees. Plus there are many wild Apple trees ,Plumb trees and Chokecherry bushes. The wild life have abundant food in my area even in hard winters!
I learn so much from you. Thank you!!
Plant some comfrey next to the tree. It will bring the nutrients from deep in the soil to the trees
Ya, I have a few dozen plants emerging now and I’m starting to divide them already for more plants
Watching from Germany
Hi from. Yorkshire England. Love to Cali. .🐕
How fun. Good Luck!!
I am very impressed by your carpentry skills. Great job on the vegetable and poultry/turley farm
the best part of all the fruit tree's ... is you can save the seeds and grow more for the animals an yourself ... a lot of these types of trees take a few years to start fruiting .. so planting a few extra every year makes for more crops every year .... as it staggers when the various plantings fruit ... also scything a few dozen stooks of the grass from the meadow would make for great over winter bedding in the garden ... even keep a few aside to place out for the animals to bed in and eat on the far side of the meadow ...
The sandhill cranes are the true winter birders here in Florida.
We planted nine apple trees 3 years ago, got our first 30 honey crisp apples in year 3 on one of the nine. Hopefully more this year
I’ve found using 2x4 weld wire fence works well with deer. They just don’t like wire fencing.
Impresivno...
Your beautiful property…..absolute perfection. Everything you need right on your doorstep. And speaking of doorstep the only thing I can think of to complete this utopia is a rocking chair for the porch. 👵🐶 me and my old friend would enjoy sitting there and enjoying the sights and sounds. We’re big admirers Ottawa 👋😉👍
Shawn!...pee in a jug and use it to make a barrier around the garden works incredibly well
HELLO JAMES,....WE need a capwell years to understand what it is in your had now....kuting and planting...but we have the patiance and i hope time to see....WE LOVE YOU
What we did with all the apple trees. As well as my chestnut tree. That's right. We actually put the chicken wire around it. It stopped deer from biting on it. They may also put a fence around them like maybe 3 foot away from the tree and diameter.
Some people dig the center out of stumps add soil and plant another tree . Also some people add flagging to their fences to keep deer from getting hung up. You could just dump foliage from the garden or leaves on the fruit tree bases. It's a lot work to live that way , steady as she goes.
Those were sandhill cranes to be exact.
The cranes come to our state of Nebraska. People come from all over the world to see them in the spring. Platte River Valley in Nebraska.
I watched the whole video and now I'm exhausted!
I enjoy watching your vlog. I love nature, have a wonderful and blessed day. Take care.😊
Bear toys! Lol! Around here, tree tubes are a bear's favorite toy. We can't use them unless it's right by a cabin where we can keep an eye on them and keep the maintenance up. I think they like the sound they make when you hit them.
Ha, I never thought of that! Should make for good trail camera video! :)
I'm jealous you've got to hear wolves in the wild right on
🐺🐻 Another great show Shawn 💪 I really enjoyed listening to all the birds and the wolves ! Funny thing my dad did when I got my first farm Is he took my son and dUghter out to the perimeters and peed all over the place . Asked what my kids did for the day with my wife up in arms said they were out marking the territory with grandpa to keep the cougars,Coyotes and bears away 🤣 My dad was definitely old school 😆 Have a fun weekend and hope you get some fishing in soon ! 🐕 🌲 🦌
This year I ordered trees in smaller batches only when I had the holes ready first. It gave me time to recoup in between and no extras when it was time to concentrate on the garden.
Much better plan
Rain has been falling Shawn that you can say for all of us it is something out there right now !!!
merci JAMES

When I heard that white throated sparrow, I thought it was our trees out the window. But it was in your video. LOL!
Love what you are doing to the forest. Sounds of the wildlife and nature. Nature music is the best music.
You need a couple of extra bodies to help you! I know you said it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed. That is an understatement. For me I would feel so, so overwhelmed that it would crush my spirit. I don’t know how you stay sane. Been watching you for a long time, stay strong……..yeah. Joy S from Northern Indiana
Greetings from sweden .
Same here
"You may already know this, but to keep deer away from your fenced enclosures, cut some 24" x 3" strips of white rags and tie them at intervals to the top wire of the fence. When the wind blows and the strips flutter, deer take it for a white tail alarm and flee. No use with moose, but every little bit helps.
Really enjoyed being back at the cabin for a wee bit. Haven’t been there in ages.
Beautiful process.... thanks for sharing. Stay safe. Hugs for 🐕 Cali.
Merci Shawn James ❤
The deep woods part of property is quite nice.. working the land are my favorite videos
So jealous, we only have coywolves left here, wishing for the return of our wolves.
If you and your family like Hazelnuts you might want to grow them, fruition in 4 years from planting. First harvest will be light but after that you'll have Hazelnuts coming out your ears. Also fast growing and a very good harvest wood for fencing, posts, strong wood, takes years to rot. When I cut back some of the branches on ours I usually take the larger ones out about 3 to 5 inches in diameter and use them for firewood, great smelling and slow burn.
I’ve planted 200 hazelnuts so far, starting 3 years ago and some of them are flowering right now
@@MySelfRelianceFantastic!
@@MySelfRelianceHello from the Netherlands👋 Beautifull woods and nature. Is this on Vancouver Island?
This is in Ontario not British Columbia
@@darrellm9150 Oh. Wow. Ok. The Netherlands is getting too denselly populated. I am looking for a peacefull place with beautifull nature. So I was thinking of BC. But I don't know anything about Ontario. Maybe I should check that out too.
Gracias, Shawn disfrute mucho su video son de mucha paz hermosa la naturaleza el trino de las aves siempre admiro lo que hace saludo desde 🇨🇴
One day Shawn you are gonna have berries, nuts and all the fruit you will need, that will really help with your diet, be well.
He decided to do the carnivore diet. So, none of that. I know dumb in my opinion.
Looking Good Shawn... I am anxious to see the coop & the chickens. You and Cali take care.
Very good thank you my friend.
Love watching your videos in the woods. It is relaxing to watch. Thank you Shawn.
Thank you
Always look forward to your videos! Can you share the name of the bush that keeps away mosquitoes? Than you! God bless you Shawn!🧚🏻🧚🏻🧚🏻❤️

@MySelfReliance I will endeavor to remember that one. In Minnesota, one is always close to water!
I get like that come spring. I see I buy
Здравствуйте,Шон!Сделайте скважину и у вас будет своя чистая питьевая вода...или колодец...бегать к ручью с вёдрами'-это не вариант. Огород большой получился😉😘!!!А вообще вы молодец!
Love the video and seeing you both out and about. thanks.
I have been following you for many years (almost from the beginning) so I don't know if you were advised by someone or if it was your idea, but you are good at giving verbal explanations. In the past you were much quieter, the viewer being forced to anticipate your actions. But wait: isn't that just a brilliant marketing idea? I have no idea, but the current format is three times more interesting than what you were doing before (although the early clips are collectible). Congratulations, good health and strength in everything you do, you're brilliant man!
Vos vidéos me ravissent toujours. La nature sauvage chez vous est magnifique, les sons des animaux y participent. Un moment relaxant pour nous tout en vous voyant oeuvré pour élaborer votre rêve. Merci de partager votre univers.
Great video! I live a similar life, I can’t imagine living any other way, it’s hard work but so peaceful!❤
Excellent video Shawn, thanks!!!
