Spalted Maple Rings

Another project from my birthday Maple. This time it's a small chalice with 2 captive rings. I had fun milling up the wood in the previous video so I continued that trend here, just off camera. This time I started out with roughly a 3x3x8 inch (8x8x20cm) block. It's been a while since I made a cup so I figured this was the perfect time! It came out almost perfectly, with the exception of a crack in the base that I pretty much ignored this time around. Hopefully you enjoy watching this as much as I had fun making it.
For woodworkers:
This was turned from a block of spalted maple that I got as a gift a few years ago. I'm sure I could have let it dry for another year or two to prevent the crack that formed but I'm not too bothered by it. The end result was well worth it. Sanded the inside and outside of the cup to 220 grit. there was a bit of behind the scenes work to get the inside of the rings smooth. Mostly, a lot of sanding...
Finished the inside and bottom with walnut oil and the outside with 4 coats of clear polyurethane. Considering this is hard maple, I probably won't use this to drink out of as I'm afraid it will crack with too much moisture. I might try to give the inside a few more coats of oil to stabilize it before hand. And yes, I actually drink from the cups I make (mostly).
