German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been called the most powerful woman in the world, the liberal West's last defender, and the de facto leader of Europe. But 19 years after entering politics, she has announced she won't be running for a fifth term as chancellor and will be stepping away from politics. Her announcement comes at a pivotal time when nationalism is on the rise in Europe and the continent is still reeling from the 2015 migrant crisis. So what does Merkel stepping down mean for the future of Germany - and for the European Union?

    • @@barnaby4232 you must mot understand our parliamentary system - we have no lame ducks unless the coalition partner backs away which usually happens just months before an election and only in some areas as she governs with a centrist grand coalition interested in similar multipartisan legislation.. Fact is she is more popular than ever (84% approval rating), managing the third major crisis of her career and Germany's decentralised mode of governance doesn't need her domestically all the time which allows her to pursue European politics and strengthen perception of european unity (sending aid/military doctors and health equipment to Portugal this week e.g., Italian financial aid) Say what you want about her politics but lame duck is just an idiotic statement imported from presidential systems and news coverage abroad - little to no applicability to Merkel

I was always quite proud of her, since she's not only a woman, but also fron the Eastern part of Germany, which are both groups that tend to be underrepresented. She's actually extremely intelligent and even quite charming, which didn't exactly hurt her career. :)

Countries in Europe might be "forced" to join in, to maintain good relations with the US. The wars down there are more or less useless, compared to the outcome. There is still a war in Afghanistan, that has led to many refugees. Iraq is also a zone right now, though the missions (at least here from Denmark) is more about training troops. There aer being spent a lot of rescources in the middleeastern/african countries. Money we could spend on ourselves rather than bombing and shooting others.

While "far" right and left party's grow more popular since the economic crisis in the shadow of an (undemocratically large and unquestioning ) majority. Neither of them will have actual power but they represent extreme views and legitimise both racism and anarchic car burning (that has tradion in our capital) while undermining trust in the political establishment and state organs (like Merkel's predecessor did trough corruption). In general, I don't feel much about her but won't mind the change, as the German system is less personalised than others.

In Germany being in the goverment as a party is not good for the voting results in the next election. The biggest difference exist between youth and old people. • @@phoradio1277 I can do that as a 15 year old German citizen. Angela Merkel and her party [CDU] are kinda hated right now in Germany because they don't do enough against global warming. Especially the young generation is against the old German parties in the parliament such as SPD or the CDU. A KZheadr called "Rezo" made an one hour video that is called "Die Zerstörung der CDU" you can translate to "The destruction of the CDU" in which he criticized the party and other parties of the German parliament such as the SPD and AfD. The Video got 12 million views very quickly and because it was a week before the EU-elections it had a big impact. It was all over German news channels and we even saw it in one of our politics lessons. it is kinda hard to explain everything that happend if you want you can do a bit of research because it was very interesting how a KZheadr changed a lot. And I think that the young generation isn't against the European Union because brings so much freedom you can work everywhere inside the EU and you have so much more freedom inside it. (Oh btw. They are showing only half of the EU member right there on the map at 0:55 idk why) there are just many things to change and that's what annoys many young Europeans. I hope my grammar wasn't too bad tho and this is what you asked for.

      @GuitarFabi@GuitarFabi5 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you both for your replies I found the extremely interesting. If I may ask you both a question. It seems that you both care about cleaning up the environment. Do you not find it counter productive to want to clean up the environment and let in so many migrants? I am just really curious as to your take because it seems like you could have one or the other in my opinion. The reason that I hold that opinion is because here migrants normally bring their habits with them and just being honest they really seem to not care. I understand however, it wouldn't be at the top of my list when continually looking for food and avoiding drug violence.

      @phoradio1277@phoradio12775 жыл бұрын
    • @@phoradio1277 Another German here. When it comes to cleaning up the environment, the biggest issue right now (but not the only one) is CO2 emissions. Migrants, regardless of their habits, don't have a statistical impact on that compared to pretty much anyone of note. And even if they were to litter like it's a littering competition they would collectively still do less damage than, say, a major corporation that produces unrecyclable plastics in the first place. Many Green voters think that letting in those many refugees is one of the few good things Merkel actually did. They just disagree with most of her other (center-right) policies, and maybe with the amount of organization, oversight and support that went into managing all of those refugees.

I’m pretty sure this was also partly caused by Trumps election and his racist and discriminating views. The number of people who are against immigrants has been increasing among my age (I’m 20) and it’s very alarming since about 50% of my country’s population is composed of foreigners and a rise in nationalism would be detrimental for my country’s stability, society and economy

If you're the second, you should know that, well, it's not true. The EU is very democratic, I'd say more democratic than the UK. In which regard (or regards) do you consider the EU to be undemocratic specifically?

  • I'm sorry to say that a lot of this is quite inaccurate. To make this quick: a) France led the effort to adopt the Euro, Germany (chancellor Kohl) only accepted it as a concession for France to agree to a re-unified Germany. b) Merkel never was much of a leader to Europe, all of the previous chancellors (bar Kiesinger who was only in office for 4 years anyway) were much more integrated in the effort to push Europe forward. Merkel on the other hand was always seen as someone looking towards the USA rather than the EU and consequently you will find it hard to pinpoint any European inniciative she took on her own without outside circumstances forcing her to do something. c) Your grand coalition graphic is misleading as the CSU is a sister party to the CDU which is only active in Bavaria (where in turn there is no CDU), while the SPD is an independent party active in all 16 states (also their voter share is 4 times as big as the CSU as of yet - even larger in the past). Also Merkel did work in different coalitions, also with the FDP (right wing liberals) from 2009-2013 and tried to forge a coalition with Greens and FDP in 2017. Also many fault the 3 grand coalitions under Merkel for strengthening more extreme parties (previously we only ever had 1 grand coalition under Kiesinger in the late 60's). d) The german government advocated for drasticly different policies in Greece than in Germany. In Germany they increased public spending in the worst crisis years fully in line with Keynes and adopted austerity afterwards. In Greece they advocated for austerity straight away which crippled the greek domestic market and made the crisis even worse. e) Germany gave asylum to refugees, not migrants as you say, for gods sake, this is a stupid error. f) you totally omitted any talks on Schröder and the Agenda 2010 which is central when discussing Merkel. Schröder is much more to credit or to blame (depending on where you stand) for the current economic situation in Germany and the large low wage sector. Merkel didn't touch this but got a lot of credit for the economy, while the SPD slowly crumbled.

  • Little detail adjustment at 2:30 The SPD and the CSU did not form the CDU. The CDU (Christian Democratic Union) is the party of Angela Merkel itself. The so called Christian Social Union (CSU) on the other hand is basically the same party but represented onyl in Bavaria (it's a bavarian identity and pride thing that lead to this outcome). So the union of the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Christian Democrats is called "Great Coalition"

    @GabrielvonBorstel@GabrielvonBorstel3 жыл бұрын
    • I think the animation was more to represent how CDU, CSU and SPD are merging into the Grand Coalition, although it does look a bit as if they form the CDU. Also, I might add to your point that you often treat CDU and CSU as one entity in Germany, since they almost always work together in one parliamentary group and I think always are part of the same coalition, if they happen to form one with someone else. Then they are commonly referred to as just "The Union".

  • "Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer a moderate Merkel supporter", that is only half-way true. While she is rather left-wing considering her party on economic issues, she is quite conservative on social issues, comparing same-sex marriage with incest only a short while ago.

    • @@uvbe not really. They will probably lose more. 1) people in the party which like such statements will think they are faking it and go to a party to the right. Additionally they will think this way of thinking is right because the established parties are adopting it. 2) on the other hand moderate members will think the party is going in the wrong direction and some will go. Simply too not be associated with such opinions. At least that happened with the csu. But it is wrong to say that all members of (to stay in Germany) afd are like that. Most (presumably 40%-60%) are simply depressed with the current politics and the extreme part of the party (presumably 20%-40%) is only louder and grabbed the leadership. It's still sad that the bigger part of the party is apathetical with the situation and seems to think it is better to be associated with radically right views in comparison to the disappointing politics of the other parties.
