Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban have restricted women's freedoms and rights. Girls and women have protested, but faced a massive crackdown.
The Last Torch got its inspiration from the women protesting across the country and emerged shortly after the Taliban's takeover of power. This documentary follows them as they risk their lives to fight for freedom.
This film also features three generations of female musicians who have been resisting the restrictions imposed on them by various regimes in a deeply conservative society.
Farida Mahwash is the only female singer who obtained the title of Ustad (maestro) and speaks about opportunities and challenges for female musicians since the 70s.
Sonita Alizada, one of the first female rappers from Afghanistan, has been using her stage to challenge traditional values restricting women and girls.

Just some centuries ago, Christianity was castrating people of other races for eugenics, destroying many pagan beliefs, forcefully converting others to christianity, and burning books and codices of the native Americans. This problem doesn't lie inherently in Islam. Any religion can be politicised. First, the worst religion was Christianity, and now its Islam. Most christian-majority countries are now secular. People are only adding more fuel to the fire by discriminating against Muslims.

    • Just let the women know that you support them by commenting in their videos, stand by them in spirit. Let your disdain of oppressors (like the taliban) be known, use your voice in social media. If you see any petitions that will raise awareness, sign them. Women in the United States had to fight for many years for the same rights that men were automatically given at birth such as : voting, wearing pants, owning land, having a credit card in their name etc. Some of these rights weren't available to women until the late 1970s to the early 1980s, including equal pay. Women have been imprisoned, humiliated, disowned etc. just for wanting equal rights. You must fight to keep your rights daily. They already took our rights to Healthcare away and they aren't going to stop at that, they want to take birth control next. Vote blue to keep them from becoming our taliban in the United States. Before the taliban took over Afghanistan in 1980, the women dressed exactly like us and had all their rights, now they can't get an education or walk in a park. It's religious extremists, like the ones that support the republican party in America. We can help Afghani women by helping ourselves first. If we lose our voices, we'll be helpless to others. 18:14

  • These heroines have inspired me. I'm a Hungarian woman from the capital Budapest, and do street music. The first song the sisters sing, has a Szekler Hungarian tune parallel from Suseni (Eastern Transylvania, RO), also a Turkish one and a Mari one (latter collected by Robert Lach, noted by Zoltán Kodály in his book Hungarian Folk Music). The Hungarian variant also reflects a condition that the lyrical self wants to burst out of. Find the original recording from 1910 in ZTI Hungaricana database: type the audio ID MH - 1263 into the browser and click on Hangfelvétel lejátszása (means Play audio) button. I've just had the brainwave to join The Last Torch as an external supporter, learn the 1st piece from this video, match it with its Hungarian tune parallel into stereo with a friend, include it into an exclusive open mic performance and make it heck viral.

  • ..... and things weren't much better in the UK up to the 20th century. My grandmother used to recount stories of her experiences with gender discrimination as a child, and it continued to anger her until her death at the age of 99. As a male, she taught me a lot about respecting fellow humans and the rights of women. I fear that, much like in Afghanistan, it was fueled by male religious bigots. It's a sad reflection of human reality that such philosophies are allowed to propagate. History undoubtedly keeps repeating itself. Ad altiora!

    • Because their men continue the oppression regardless. Then there's some women enforcing it also. Female cutting still happening in London and the government stays out of it. Reports of many women going to police in England and being told it's a cultural religion issue. Countries are appeasing islamists and women still suffer.

  • The word HIJAB is used in the Quran but NOT for Ladies. They took the desert clothing that is needed in sand storms and called it religious. Other religious groups were already wearing it for a long time. in Quran 24.31. The word is KHIMAR. Khimar just means COVERING (They’ve added head, hair, face to the word “covering”) Quran 24.31 (part) //… put forth the KHIMARs over the JAYBs …// “yadribna bi’Khumur’ihinna ala juyoob’ihinna” [Plurals : khumur, juyoob] Put forth the COVER over the Jayb. Please notice it just gives importance to: “Cover the Jayb” Jayb means OPENING (Like an opening in a shirt for creating a pocket - some translate it as Bosoms coz that’s where the Jayb is) They will then point out Quran 33.59 but see what it says in that verse also: “…JILBAB over themselves…” JILBAB- outer clothing (wearing of decent clothes over the underwears as OUTER CLOTHING) (Please NOTICE:- No head, hair, face cover even in this verse)

After all, no one lives forever. We're only waiting our turn to be called by our maker. And may I not know nor serve a god that forces people to worship it. And later they opened up because it harmed their health. I am a believer, like many members of my family, we pray, try to help people in need, as stated in the Holy Book. But none of my family members or friends cover their heads. I think this is because of the Soviet past of our country (Azerbaijan).
