In a play that will go down in infamy, Edmonton Oilers defenseman Steve Smith hits goalie Grant Fuhr in the back of the leg, leading to an own goal which turned out to be the game winner for the Calgary Flames.

This still makes me laugh 32 years later... it happened on smith’s birthday, to boot.
lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll HAHAHA !
Not funny
Its hillarious
@@shatterdeath2687 Not funny
Seriously? It was Smith's birthday?? Wow, that's truly awful. I was happy for the Flames then, but that must've taken a lot of soul-searching by Smith that offseason to get over it. .
This will get quite a few views now with what just transpired in the Dallas - Colorado game. I remember watching this live...one of the biggest sports goofs of all time.
That's the exact reason I am here 😅
First thing the coach teaches you when you're a little kid playing hockey: NEVER, EVER pass the puck out in front of your own net.
It's so unforgivable to I'm sure millions and millions of Oilers fans ,as Mr.Smith cost the Oilers not only a chance at playing Montreal in the Finals but also tying and possibly breaking the Islanders Dynasty of four straight Stanley Cups.. It's ironic that a few months later in the World Series game Bill Buckner pulled a Steve Smith as well and cost his team the chance of winning the game and the World Series ....
The most famous goal of Perry Berezan's career!
I felt so bad for Smith he was a young defenseman and made a blunder that cost our team the series.
The HATED Oilers, I'm a Canucks fan, ah, the OILY'S still had GOLDEN opportunities that they passed up to...PASS!!!!!!! P.S.-Young, old, in-between, IT WAS a completely reckless pass, a LITTLE too casual...I guess, MOST of us make mistakes that are incomprehensible, EH???!!!!!
That was just a bad bounce, 9 times out of 10 it wouldn't have deflected backwards like that. Also don't "presume" the Oilers would have won otherwise. That's arrogant and extremely disrespectful to your opponent(and no I'm not a fan of the Flames). If the Oilers really were the team of destiny it should never gotten to a game 7 and being tied 2-2 entering the 3rd. Also this happened at 5:02 - the Oilers still had almost the entire period to mount a comeback but they fell flat the rest of the way.
@@elvicare35 - I absolutely HATE the Bruins, but I was happy when they beat the dumb Canucks.
From hawks fan. Love you smitty
It may have been a blunder, but it was a blunder that was made by someone who played _in an NHL team,_ and this in itself makes him one of the best hockey players in history.
This series made such an impression on me as a 9 year old kid in California. If I'm not mistaken think this 85-86 Oilers team had the most points in the regular season during their 1982-1990 run.
Aaaaaannd Smith went on to have a very full and successful career.
this blunder happened tonight in Game 2 2021 Stanley Cup Finals - Tampa Bays 3rd goal was almost identical with the Habs player passing backwards behind his own net right on the stick of Tampa Bays forward who shot it off of Price’s skate into the net.
Not nearly as bad. Tampa player just read the pass and got a funny bounce.
Greatest goal ever scored
The Oilers finished 20 pts ahead of the Flames in the standings and yet the Flames ultimately became the "David" to the Oilers' "Goliath". The Oilers were obviously looking past the Flames to the final and it cost them.
Everyone presumes that the Oilers would have won if it didn't happen which is laughable. The game was tied at that point but Flames had them playing their game. If the Oilers really were the team of destiny it should never gotten to a game 7 and being tied 2-2 entering the 3rd. Plus they still had almost the entire period to mount that comeback after this happen but Gretzky and the Oiler's simply fell flat the rest of the way that's all there is to it.
If Edmonton had won in 1986, that would have made 5 straight Cup victories. What an awesome team that was.
Forget that... Patrick Roy was unbeatable during the series of 85-86. Habs beat the flames in 5 games and Roy with a Conn Smythe trophy. Roy lost only 5 games and won 4 games in OT.
the Islanders won 4 straight and it should have been 5 if the stupid NHL hadn't changed the 1984 playoff format--in fact they probably should have won in 1979 too
Damn straight.....too bad the NHL was so far up Gretzky's ass at the time that they would have done anything to prevent a repeat of the 83 final.
@@Keboomrang oilers owned roy and fuhr would of matched him save for save. Flames did better against the oilers because they played each other 20 times a season in the same divisioin. They knew each other well. Roy would of gotten destroyed by the oilers teams
@@bufnyfan1 So maybe they would have lost in 6 instead of 5.
technically Fuhr put it in
Oh the humiliation
Cale Makar's blunder just a few hours ago was bad but nowhere NEAR the blunder of Steve Smith's! This one will live on for eternity!!!
I SAW this when it happened LIVE on tele-vision, and was just watching the last 15 minutes or so of it on, Classic games replayed on Sportsnet, and, YES, a nonchalant reckless pass it WAS...I'd forgotten it didn't END the game in OT or whatever, but, ah, the Oilers had a few, especially a COUPLE of GOLDEN opportunities to shoot the puck in PRIME spots, and, DIDN'T, they passed up the op's, and...PASSED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone forgets this happened at 5:02 of the third, the Oilers still had almost an entire period to mount a comeback but they simply fell flat the rest of the way.
@@vejet Something that Oiler fans, and specifically Flame-hating or Hab-hating ones, always conveniently forget!
And the following year Gretzky passed the cup to Steve and let him skate with it. That’s a true captain.
The agony of defeat.
This is the worst part about being an oilers fan
What about Steve Smith's horrible own goal from 1986 Smythe final? Or is colour television too outdated for the Internet?
32 Years Later, Cris Russel Happened.
Best goal the Oilers ever scored
I think they should ask for an offside review.
Is it the only reason why they did not win the cup in 86 ? I mean is the oilers damaged during that serie ?
That puck took a crazy bounce off the pad… you could try to do that and fail.
Exactly. That was just a bad bounce, at least 99 times out of 100 it wouldn't have deflected backwards like that.
Wait, did that actually happen?
sad for smitty, just like greg norman, scott norwood, bill buckner, to show what class gretzky had when they won the cup the next year in a game 7 over philadelphia, wayne passed the cup over to steve smith, total class by wayne.
Lucky for Montreal this happened. Roy wouldn't have had a prayer against Edmonton in the Finals
Only player to ever score a goal while on the bench. Perry berezan. Messier made him pay dearly two years later for it
I remember this live...Calgary went on to win the Stanley Cup while the teenagers at my MMGCI high school in Saskatoon were making comments like “Smith probably won’t show his face in Edmonton again” to “Steve Smith needs to apply at McDonald’s this morning if he wants to have any kind of future”...well, Steve Smith CAME BACK BIG TIME FOR EDMONTON-MAY GOD BLESS EVERYONE...ALWAYS-JOHN 3:16
I don't recall the Calgary Flames winning the Stanley Cup in 1986, the flames were out after the series that followed this one.. I do remember this happening live as well. Everyone in the neighbourhood was glued to their tv's in their houses, everyone where I grew up was either a Flames or Oilers fan. When this happened you could hear a pin drop. All the dads on the block went outside after the game was over and you could hear them talking outside in disbelief at what had just took place. There was no celebration from the Flames fan dads either, everyone was shell shocked.
Christopher Hahn actually Calgary lost to Montreal in the finals in 1986 . They won in 1989
And to think that both Steve Smith and Grant Fuhr would later wear the uniform of the Flames.
What a terrible feeling that must have been. Must have felt like a total donkey. He probably locked himself in the closet for a month after scoring on his own net.
Get over this already. I'm sick of hearing how he cost them the game. There was 14:46 left in the 3rd period. If they were really Cup destined, they should have been able to score 2 or 3 with the time that was left. Once again, there was 14:46 left in the 3rd
It's ok Smitty. You got three cups right after this.
Quel pied !!!!
Thank you Steve Smith. My Habs won the Stanley Cup that year because of what you did 👍
Yall still gonna get swept by the leafs
@@ph0ssil581 Hell naw. Habs in 6. Leafs too soft for the playoffs.
@@rebeltvr6046 even if you guys somehow win. You'll lose to the Oilers or jets
@@ph0ssil581 Habs own the Oil this year. Jets are imploding. Habs can easily get to the semis.
No, our Habs won the Stanley Cup that year because of Patrick Roy.
Whenever I feel at my lowest, I watch this clip. Interesting fact: whenever Smith handled the puck in a game against the Flames after that, the Flames fans would yell “shoot” - not nice, but hey, Battle of Alberta. Sather said that Edmonton didn’t hold the goal against Smith, but when Smith got traded away and played in games in Edmonton, guess what the Edmonton fans would chant? “Shoot.” Oilers suck.
That taunt was not limited to Calgary. We did the same in Winnipeg. I'm sure it followed him to every rink in the league
seems like a typical dumb think that an oilers player would do
At least he didn't try to murder a person by slamming their head on the ice
You mean "dumb thing"? Might want to proof read your spelling mistakes while you're calling other people dumb.
dynasty teams dont do alot of "dumb things".they win
Oligophrenic
He was better at football
looks very suspicious! he did that on purpose
Hm, this is why I don't like ice hockey. It lasted until the second replay until I actually saw what happened.
You get used to seeing the puck. It doesn't take long.
The video quality of games is much better now.
