  • It's gonna take a sledge hammer to knock the smile off my face. That was amazing. I grew up in a crappy town in Wyoming (I was born in '75.) This kid Randy moved to our neighborhood. He was from Queens, and had to come live with his cop aunt in Cheyenne. Think Fresh Prince, but in a trailer park, and he was a super flashy italian kid, who people just called homophobic slurs. I was a giant with a bad temper, and as the only Jewish kid in school, got ripped on for that, and the 3rd member of our little trio was Curt, who was literally the only black kid in the entire school. …but we had a thing that no one else had. Starting in summer of '84, Randy's had this cousin that would dub brand new hip hop singles and send to him. So these three outcasts got together every saturday, and listened to the newest hip hop on this crappy little portable tape player, while playing Atari, eating terrible frozen pizza, and drinking Shasta sodapop. This really takes me back almost 40 years. I can still feel the weird scratchy sofa, the ancient nicked up coffee table, the shafts of light slicing through the blinds. That crappy little tape player next to the beat-to-hell Atari 2600. The TV that you had to move the antennas when you changed to the other 3 channels. …and Me, Randy and Curt being blown away by Run-DMC, LL, EPMD, Treacherous Three, Whodini, Big Daddy Kane. All the greats. Eventually we were able to mail order tapes, and we upgraded from Atari to Sega Genesis. Randy moved back to Queens and Curt's dad got a job in Texas somewhere, but for a few years, every weekend was for hip hop, video games, and really cheap frozen pizza.

  • Old-School will never die! Much love and recognition to those born 1969 to 1980. We will forever be the last of the real Hip-Hop children that kids today can only dream of! The last of the Mohicans...Gen X baby!

  • I saw the Beasties Boys and LL Cool J open for RUN-DMC at a concert in Brooklyn in 1985, then in 1998 I was DJing live on the air for a radio station at Port Jazz in Port Jefferson NY and the person who came to relieve me in the booth was DJ Hurricane, I was star struck because he was part of the original Hollis Crew, and I had seen him with the Beastie Boys at 2 concerts.

  • OMG - This is the BEST thing I have seen online in a a long while. This reminds me of my first year at UT Knoxville, then thr following years teaching in the BEST URBAN BEAT Ville’ Mechanicsville, TNthe streets were jumpin’ with these still SIC BEATS and LYRIC. I was waiting for Will Smith to bump in and run a beat with the M-A-S-T-E-R-s of OLD SKOOL Hip Hop ! I may just put this on rerun and play it all day. It is like ☀️ for my weary winter, sick of snow and ice, soul. So happy I came upon this today. If I might add the maturity of these genius artist make it sound even better, I see #SlickRick and the #SnoopDog Doggie Dog ‘s names rolling amongst hundreds of others rolling behind the stage. WOW Are you coming within 250 Miles of Knoxville we are no Metropolis like Philly or my fave, NYC but, you drive out University or College Lane by the old Knox College and down thru the Ville’ off I40 East & 17th. . . This is the music you still hear, especially, on a warm summer night. 🫡 Much Respect Gentlemen🫡 ❤️🤍💙

  • Let's get it...If you want to know what we were doing in the park then in some clubs here in NYC, then watch when DMC came in. It was just like that,DJ drops that funky beat, MCs get on the MIc,and we would do this for HOURS. NO paper, no gimmicks, just records and rhymes, There are still some cassettes out there recorded back then, and this was BEFORE sampling,so DJs had to mix, cut, and scratch by hand. Much love to these pioneers, because DMC brought HipHop to the world on the commercial level,, and LL, well his body of work speaks for itself 50 YEARS later. Shout out to HTown,(yes I have been there), from the Boogie Down Bronx..
